I agree with James of the 2 I'd opt for the VXII.
Though I'd check out the Zeiss Conquest for comparison sake. To my eye it is superior to the VXIII and cost less or similar depending on the model of interest.
Nikon Monarch or Bushnell Elites would also be worth comparing to the leupold VXII.

The 3 is clearer and brighter. Do you need it? That depends on your hunting regulations. In SC the hours for deer hunting are from one hour before till one hour after legal sunrise and sunset. That little bit of extra light from the vx3 is useful here. Would you need it where you hunt? That will answer you question.

I have always bought Vari-X III's, and loved them. I will say, the VXIII is a clearer scope with that lens are much better in index refraction matching. All that said, from what I have compared, the VXII is the same optical quality as the Vari-X III's.
Is it worth more money? Only you can say. I myseld do not like the fact that Leupold has went to a three piece tube design. I like the one piece like Nikon and even the elites still have.

I've been shooting VX-IIs for a few years now, and I can honestly say I beat the crap outta my scopes and they never lose 0 and I can see plenty long after shooting hours is over and well before it starts up.
I do want to get a VXIII with the BC reticle for my next scope though, or maybe the VXII with the LR reticle......
