RE: 1,000 yard deer rifle...
I be the first to question the need for a 1000 yard deer rifle. I think the rifle you have built is wonderful, and wonderful for the purpose of target shooting but not deer hunting.
I have been shooting Highpower XC, and Long range competition for years. Highpower XC is a series of matches from 200 yards standing to 600 yards prone while the long range is a 1000 yard prone match. I see you have a 6x284....The 6.5X284 was really developed and used quite extensivley by the long range crowd these days in target competition. Shooting paper and shooting a game animal are two very different things and although I have shot 1000's of rounds at long ranges in competition my personal limits on a game animal is 400 yards. I am not trying to sound Holier than thou in this, but I urge you not to shoot at deer or any game animal at those distances. |

ORIGINAL: DAVID WHITE What do you mean by the barrel being "recessed"? DAVID |
RE: 1,000 yard deer rifle...
My 50 BMG can outshoot this gun at 800 + yards. 2" groups at 900 yards using AR-50 with 750 Gr. Hornady A-Max reloads. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

RE: 1,000 yard deer rifle...
Barrel is larger than the action screw in. Recessed.
|
RE: 1,000 yard deer rifle...
Yes, the muzzle is recessed with a series of 4 steps or actually a crown within a crown. This is more cosmetic than anything else as my trade mark on big barrels like this is usually a "triple crown"...
Yes again, the barrel is larger than what the receiver is and as such, I left the recoil lug off and the shoulder of the barrel itself acts as the recoil lug with the minimal recoil generated by the cartridge.... DAVID |
RE: 1,000 yard deer rifle...
Well, doggone I have not seen a 6mm-284 before. Don't have any tables that go out to 1k either. What kind of energy does it have at 1000?
|
RE: 1,000 yard deer rifle...
Off the top of my head, I do not remember what the foot pounds of energy is at 1,000 yards but I do know that the Hornady 105 gr. A-MAX will perform on deer at that distance as I have personally made one-shot kills at that distance and beyond as well as having witnessed others making kills at 1,000+ yards using the same bullet....
