Ruger makes a 10/22 magnum that you can buy a 17HMR barrel for it if you wish to go that route. It will cost alot more than a Rem 597, but its an all around better gun.

But if its just a plinker, I'd just get a standard 22lr.

If you're going to teach your daughter to shoot w/ it.. how about a nice bolt action like a CZ or something?
I am certainly looking into this option as well. There are tons of options out there with bolts, but I don't own any semi's and thought it would be fun and different to shoot one.

That CZ is a PURTY rifle though!

Take my advice and stay away from the 597. I owned one for a month before a sold it. I had feeding problems with the old, and revised magizines. Can't go wrong with a 10/22.

I have one in a 22mag and I have never had a feeding problem. I have ran about 500 rounds through it .It is very accurate

I shot a couple hundred rounds through my597 yesterday while I was waiting for my 30-30 barrel to cool off. Not one fail to feed, fail to fire, fail to eject, even with the old style plastic clips. Best group was 75 rounds of Wolf Match Target into a quarter size group at 50 yards.

10/22's have a reputation as being very reliable, but all the stock ones I see are not very accurate.

i had 2 stock ruger 1022's and they werent as accurate as I had hoped. Sold them and a few years later ( 2004 ) bought a 597, nothing but problems with the clip. I have a bolt action marlin 22 lr and it is a dream to shoot.. Go with a bolt action marlin, anything marlin is a tack driver..

Be interesting to see how it performs with a 30-round mag from Eagle International. Got one on order. Anxious to try it out.

Take my advice and stay away from the 597.

I'll second that. I have a 597 that I bought new and I really don't care for it. In addition to the feeding issues, it's not what I'd call accurate and the trigger sucks.

I have shot 2 Model 597's quite a bit and i didnt really like them much either. They both jammed up a lot, but they were fairly accurate
