Remington Model 597
Has anyone had any experience with this model? I am looking for a plinker to shoot around the range and maybe teach my daughter with. Probably a 17HMR or 22WMR.

RE: Remington Model 597
I've got one and had some problems with the magazines feeding properly. They've updated the magazines since I got my 597, but you might be better off with a 10/22 or a Marlin semi-auto. If you do a search, you'll find the magazine problem is somewhat common. Also, when cleaning, there's a couple of screws that hold the bolt guide rods in place. in order to clean the bolt good, you have to remove the screws and take out the rods and their associated springs. The springs can be a pain to re-install.
It's a nice little plinker, but these are a couple of issues to consider. It's the only .22 semi-auto that I have owned, so I can't really compare it to others. Other rifles may have their shortcomings. These two are the ones I've encountered with the 597. If I bought another .22 rifle, I'd probably look at either the 10/22 or a Marlin semi-auto. |
RE: Remington Model 597
I've never actually owned one myself, but friend I shoot with from time to time has one, and like xd9x19, he has problems getting the magazines to feed properly.
I opted for the Ruger 10/22 and I absolutely love it. |
RE: Remington Model 597
If you are just looking for a plinker or something to teach your daughter I would go with either the 10/22 or a marlin .22 LR. The shells are a whole lot cheaper and you can shoot all day long for around $15. We shot a box of 550 rounds through my pistol this weekend and bought an new box for $10. So it is hard to beat a .22LR for just plinking.

RE: Remington Model 597
One other note. So far I've only used Remington ammo - the ammo that comes in the 550 round value packs and some of the limited edition metal tins. Ammo might have contributed to the feeding problem, but I would think Remington ammo should work reasonably well in a Remington rifle.

RE: Remington Model 597
ORIGINAL: cma3366a If you want a semi-auto 22mag ot 17hmr, the 597 is your only choice at the moment. With newer magazines they're decent rifles. I'm in the middle of Ruger country with a plant near by in Newport, NH and many of the guys at the range shoot 10/22. Awesome rifle. I was just checking other options and I was looking for other caliber options. Thanks for the feedback. I had heard about the magazine issue. |
RE: Remington Model 597
Hey chief, I live in NH and let me tell ya, go with either a 10/22 or marlin .22 Both are great guns and will not let ya down!!

RE: Remington Model 597
I won this one...Looks nice
So nice I've never fired it. |
RE: Remington Model 597
Ruger makes a 10/22 magnum that you can buy a 17HMR barrel for it if you wish to go that route. It will cost alot more than a Rem 597, but its an all around better gun.
But if its just a plinker, I'd just get a standard 22lr. |
RE: Remington Model 597
If you're going to teach your daughter to shoot w/ it.. how about a nice bolt action like a CZ or something? That CZ is a PURTY rifle though! |

RE: Remington Model 597
Take my advice and stay away from the 597. I owned one for a month before a sold it. I had feeding problems with the old, and revised magizines. Can't go wrong with a 10/22.

RE: Remington Model 597
I have one in a 22mag and I have never had a feeding problem. I have ran about 500 rounds through it .It is very accurate
|
RE: Remington Model 597
I shot a couple hundred rounds through my597 yesterday while I was waiting for my 30-30 barrel to cool off. Not one fail to feed, fail to fire, fail to eject, even with the old style plastic clips. Best group was 75 rounds of Wolf Match Target into a quarter size group at 50 yards.
10/22's have a reputation as being very reliable, but all the stock ones I see are not very accurate. |
RE: Remington Model 597
i had 2 stock ruger 1022's and they werent as accurate as I had hoped. Sold them and a few years later ( 2004 ) bought a 597, nothing but problems with the clip. I have a bolt action marlin 22 lr and it is a dream to shoot.. Go with a bolt action marlin, anything marlin is a tack driver..

RE: Remington Model 597
Be interesting to see how it performs with a 30-round mag from Eagle International. Got one on order. Anxious to try it out.

RE: Remington Model 597
ORIGINAL: Jake480 Take my advice and stay away from the 597. I'll second that. I have a 597 that I bought new and I really don't care for it. In addition to the feeding issues, it's not what I'd call accurate and the trigger sucks. |
RE: Remington Model 597
I have shot 2 Model 597's quite a bit and i didnt really like them much either. They both jammed up a lot, but they were fairly accurate
|
RE: Remington Model 597
My 597 was a jammaster. Then I modified the magizine acording to a post over at rimfire central, and now it has no issues. It has now digested 1050 rounds without one hiccup. And it is plenty accurate for me considering the trigger and light bbl.
