Well they are touted as being MOA guns, so if it shot an inch 100 yards that it pretty good. Some shoot much better than that though. However MOA with factory loaded rimfire ammo is pretty darn good in my opinion.
You hear lots of people claim half inch groups with with the 17, but oddly enough don't see it very often. I would gues most guns average around on inch groups for 5 shots. The 17's seem to have problems with fliers every now and then. My savage heavy barrel is capable of sub MOA groups, but the average is around 1 inch at 100 yards on a calm day.
Now at 50 yards it is down right scary accurate.
I know a few people that have the NEF 17 and they seem happy with it. I am sure you could get a better gun, but it would cost more money. If you want some serious info about the NEF and 17 in general check out these two sites.

Rimfire central has more info than you could ever need to now about .22's and 17's, with different forums for each manufacturer as well.
Graybeard's has some very good forums for H&R/NEF guns. It is the diffiinitive place to go for all things NEF in my opinion.
I am sure a lot of people people here belong to both of these sites.
Good luck,
Paul
