30-30 or 35 rem would work for you?? they're good short range deerrounds

Hands down the 30-30 cuz isn't this wat type of hunting most of yous say the 30-30 is good for?? So why say different now. 30-30336a marlin with a 1x4 or 3x9 or open sights. But imo this is the percect situation to hunt with a 30-30.

A marlin, lever gun is the best rifle you could carry for closer range hunting. 444, 45-70, 35, or 30-30 would be the best choice you could make. Light, short, easy to carry. And will knock any size deer down at 100yds. I like the 444 and 45-70.

get a 12 or 20 guage slug shotgun with a rifled barrel.....you are good to go

The 250 Savage sure does not lack the power to take deer cleanly. I have shot many with the 700 Remington in 250 Savage. Its not trick to get 3000 fps with the 100 Grain Ballistic tip and it is deadly on deer out to 300 yards. I hunt on the prairie where shots are very often 200 yards or more. My wife and I have both used that 250 and have never lost a deer or even had one go more than 25 yards or so. I have used it side by side with the 257 Roberts, Darned if I can see much difference in performance. I also have one in the model 99 Savage. My Remington has a 24 inch barrel and although I didn't use many of them I have seen 3150 fps from the 100 grain X bullet.

If you dont prefer a lever rifle, the 250 savvy is awesome. I like a 300 savage also. 7mm 08 and 260 are also great and so is the 257 roberts. None of these are short range really, but are adequate for 100yd shots.

My 700 Remington 250-3000 has a 24 inch barrel. I had a model 700 in 257 Robert as well. It had a 22 inch barrel. I got about the same velocity from both rifles. I also shot a 25-06 at that time and its most accurate load was the 115 grain Nosler Ballistic tip which shot within 100 fps of the 250 and 257 Robert. I could use the same hold with all three rifles. Some knock the Ballistic tip but I would use nothing else for deer in the quarter bores. They just flat work. The 100 and 115 perform just about the same. I almost always get pass throughs or find the bullet under the hide on the far side. I have never had one do the blow-up I always hear about.

A gun that would work well would be the 7.62x39.
Ruger's Ranch Rifle is available in that caliber, or you could just get an SKS, they are very cheap. My dad bought one for $80 back in the 80's before the assult rifle ban, and the gun works as good as ever. Nowadays you should be able to get one for little over $100. The 7.62x39 is only good for shots within 100 yards, in my opinion, but within that range it'll do the job.
It doesn't kick too hard, and it's semi-automatic, soif you want to, you can make follow up shots.
