RE: 45-70

I am personally intrigued by the Hornady LEVERevolution ammunition. I am patiently waiting for the components to become available to the handloader.

The bullets should perform well in the new Marlin 1895XLR (45-70) with its 24 inch barrel; however, as mentioned earlier the 450 Marlin (Marlin 1895MXLR) would be a good choice also if you do not have a stockpile of 45-70 brass already.

I haven't had the opportunity to fondle one of these rifles yet, but I am looking forward for the chance to do so.

Another one or two to put on "the list".

LOL Just looking huh? On the 45/70 I'd say is barely adequate for Elk inside 50 yds with handloaded 600 gr tnt tips.[:@] On the other hand a 45/70 Ackley Improved would be the hot ticket! :D

It might be hard to move that shoulder ahead to do the AI.;)It might be a little tough to sell the boss on the 444 Marlin. The 223 SPS however was a piece of cake.

RE: 45-70

Guys, I hear all this wild recoil claims about the 45-70. Maybe my 45-70 is just one that doesn't. I mean I have shot 2200fps 300gr loads, and 1900fps 405gr loads in mine, it doesn't hold a candle to a 3" magnum slug in a 870 or a 200gr 300RUM load.

I did put a grind to fit limb saver on it.

RE: 45-70

Of course it depends on the rifle but the recoil of the 450 Marlin with a 350 grain Bullet at 2200 fps is 37.2 lbs. About the same as the 375 H&H. Also about the same as 45-70's loaded to that level. While these nunbers don't tell it all, it does tell you something about the 45-70's ability to recoil. Factory 45-70 loads recoil at about 17-18 lbs.

I agree. I have a .450 Marlin and a buddy of mine shoots a Ruger #1 .375 H&H and he refuses to shoot my .450 after he shot it once. I have trouble shooting it now because I shattered my wrist last year and now I have to shoot it left handed. Though when you hit something with it you don't have to worry about having to track it down.

RE: 45-70

One thing I don't understand is when looking at different reloading books they list the 45-70 strong action loads ashaving a bit morevelocity and energyover the.450 Marlin. My question is how come?Is not the .450 Marlin suppose to be in between the45-70 and 458 Win power wise? Also what rifles are realy stong action. Some books lists the single shots of course but other just say moder actions designed to handle 35,000 CUP.Soboth the modern Marlin and Win 94 levers can handle this reqirment correct? Or am I wrong?
