.458socom barrel for ar-15
 

i was wondering what you guys thought about the .458 shell and would it be a good choice. I can get a .458 complete upper for my AR-15 and not have to make any conversions at all. They want $600 for the upper, and before i spent the $$ i wanted to get some opinions.

please explain why you would want this? Im not being smart, just wondering why you would spend $600 for this......what are the advantages? And what would you use it for?

i really have no clue.... same thing i need the AR-15 for in the first place i suppose. Theres no real reason to have more than one shotty and one rifle, maybe 2 rifles but i got a house full. I like long range shooting and pinpoint accuracy i suppose. its either buy this or go buy me a whole new rifle (.308+)

Looks like the 458 socom dupes a well loaded 45 70. So long range would not be its ticket. Guess it depends on how much you like that rifle's format and what kind of variations you want to see in it. I still feel like the M16 is a mouse trap and I would not crank up the payload real high. Just my drift.

I guess if you wanted to use an AR for elk, moose and bear hunting it would be something to consider.

You could also get an upper for the 50 beowulf. Another power house of a cartridge for the AR.

Well of course they suck compared to a 300 magnum. You didn't think just because it had a neat name it was going to be some kind of super magnum did you? ;)

It shoots 300 - 600 grain bullets but must fit into an AR so there isn't a whole heck of a lot of room for powder. Basically it's a 45-70 but a case designed for an AR.

It is a short range hammer of Thore for your AR.

I would just avoid any cartridge with the suffix SOCOM, SPC, or any other name that sounds government ninja-ish. You won't be able to find the ammo anywhere right now, and won't be able to find brass for it in 3 years from now.

geeze... I can hardly belive a couple of you guys said what you said...

OK... one more time...

a .458 is a belted magnum used for very large game and short to moderate ranges... like grizzly bear @ 100 yards, or cape buffalo, muskox, etc..

a long range ace-pipper it ain't.

you wanna do stuff like that, you'd be better off with a Ballard 4 1/2 in .40-110
