Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
Who all uses one of these? I am thinking about picking on up for next year. They don't make the Precision-Fit for my 870. Just wondering if it's worth spending the money on the slip on recoil pad.
I love what their products do for my bow, so when I was scrolling through their website the recoil pads caught my eye. |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
This slip onshould work fine. You might go to theLimbsaverwebsite and compare the dimensions of some of the pre-fittted ones with the dimensions of your 870's butt. I have found one on several occasions that matches the gun almost exactly - even though it was pre fit for a completely different firearm.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I havent used the slip on type but I put prefits on my winchester 1300 defender shotgun and one on my .375 H&H Encore rifle. The shotgun is more fun to shoot with winchester high velocity loads from the bench now. I love the way they work. Im looking to put one of the slip ons ,on my remington mohawk 600 in .308. It has a black hard wood butt plate and even in .308 can start to make my shoulder sore with heavy loads.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I am not a fan of slip on recoil pads at all. They never stay put and are incredibly ugly IMO. Not to mention that they will add another inch to the LOP of the gun and you may not want or need this aditional length.
Limb saver precision fit pads are not exactly precision fit any how. Gaps and spaces abound usually. If you want a "precision fit" recoil pad for your 870 then look at Pachmayr pads. They make one for the 870 synthetic (post 99), 870 express wood (current model), & 870 wingmaster wood. |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
If looks are of primary importance (and I assumed they weren't because you appear to be strongly considering a slip on pad), the grind-to-fit Limbsaver is a good choice. Having used a lot of pads over the years, including the Pacmayer Decelerator, I think the Limbsaver is themost functionalone yet.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I was a little skeptical on the claims made by Limbsaver. I have several Pachmeyer,Kickeze and Gooey pads on different guns. It wasnt until my friend Larry Wieshun gave me a couple of slip on pads to try so I said what the heck. The pads do add to LOP and are ugly but work very well, I tried them on my 300WSm, 416 Rigby and 375 H&H. I have sinceswitched to the prefit pads on the 416 and Sako 375 H&H.
It's money well spent IMHO |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I agree Roskoe. The limb savers do seem to do a better job at recoil reduction than the Pachmayrs.
I just can't stand those slip on pads. [:'(] Grind to fit is definetly the best choice. It costs more but worth it IMO. |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I use one. Ugly but very effective.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
Since Remington now uses a Sims pad on their new guns,An R3 pad is probably available as a replacement part.I put a slip on Sims pad on my wife's 870 because it has an aftermarket Monte Carlo Stock.I really noticed a difference in felt recoil with the pad on her gun and the factory installed Sims pad on mt 870 Special Purpose. They really work great.Try checking out Remington Firearms Site and e-mailing them to find out if the new pads will fit on an older gun,I have asked them several questions and usually had a responce the next day.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
(putting on flame suit) I just can`t see why someone would buy a rifle or shotgun or handgun that was too much for them? in this day and time shouldn`t a buyer of a weapon know what to expect i mean you don`t go a buy a .375 h&h and expect it to have the recoil of a .270 win. and i get a giggle out of those pepole that think that they need the biggest and baddest rifle at camp when they can`t stand to shoot it but everyone knows that you need a .338 ulta mag for whitetail.(flame suit off)

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I don't want to put a recoil pad on my gun because my shoulder is killing me. If there is a product that is going to help my shooting ability then I figure I might as well try it out.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
Ill Buck Hunter:
My Sims pads really take the discomfort out of sighting in a 12ga slug shooter. They are worth it. Bill |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
Snipehunter: point well taken: but if a certain recoil pad can transform a gun from "ouch" to "that wasn't so bad" - it is worth having.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
Hey snipe,
Im not sure my 20ga is "too much" for me. But when I get up near 100 shots at the clay pigeons it's nice to have had on there. When I'm on the bench shooting the 2nd boxfrom the 270 it's easier on the shoulder. Totally necessary? No. It is more comfortable though. |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I have a synthetic thompson center encore in .300 win mag. Put a sims
limbsaver on and it sure helps to take the bite out of bench shooting. Great investment - doubt if you wil be disappointed... |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
What 870 do you have that a Simms (R3 in the Rem catalogs) is not made for? Every 870 we have had from the factory has been ordered with them if they didn't come as standard equipment. I have replaced pads on nearly a dozen of my long guns and my only choices are the Simms/R3s or the Pachmayer Declerator. They are AWESOME pads. I put a slip on on my 835 turkey gun lastyear after I dug it back out (hadn't used it since the 870Supermags came out several years ago) and it REALLY make a difference on that heavy hitter (2.25oz of 4x5x7 Nitro Hevi-Shot). I picked the slip on because the gun is fugly to begin with (old Real Tree camo) and I wanted to increase the length of pull so I put it on over the factory pad.
I LOVE the Simms pads, even my kids guns have them on as well. RA |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
hello danny i would hope that at 20 gague isn`t to much for you. what i was saying is that a lot of pepole go out and buy the biggest rifle or shotgun that they can get thinking that they will be the big guy of the block just to find out that they cannont stand to fire the weapon then it is off to there local gun shop to buy some type of recoil reduceing device. i have shot 2/34 12g. atsporting clay matchesuntill my shoulder/arm felt like *ell but that is what i took into the match. what i`m tring to state is that 99% of the folks that buy a recoil device may it be a slip on pad or a muzzle break should have looked into what they were going to use the firearm for. just my .02 cents

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I shoot a TC Omega muzzle loader, and if anyone has fired one with a heavy bullet and 100grs. or more of 777, you know how hard they kick. I bought one of the Simms prefitted pads, yes they don't fit perfectly, and it made a VERY noticable difference in the felt kick. When you go out to shoot,50 to 100 shots, thay make a big difference in my shooting.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I have been happy with the sim limbsaver recoil pad. All my hunting rifles wear either a sims or pachymer, it has nothing to do with use in the field but everything to do with getting to that point. I do the majority of my load testing in the warm weather well in advance of the approaching season, this usually means t-shirts and bug spray here on the prairie's;)! So the ability to work through my loads with comfort is welcomed. Also I suffer from a bad shooting wing that has seen multiple surgeries, these pads as well help meremain productive following my range time.
To the question if you can't find a pre-fit in the sims, R3 or pachymer for your 870 then I as well suggest a grind to fit. Worth the investment IMHO. |
RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I like the Limbsaver slip on pads. I have one on my old 336 30/30. I have pre fit pads on some of my other guns and am a great fan of Limbsaver products.

RE: Limbsavers Slip on Recoil Pad
I have one on my Savage in 7mm RM, and it really takes the bite out of shooting, especially in prone position.
