Default 7mm Rem Mag

I am looking for a new moose gun and was interested in this caliber. How is it for moose in general?

I personally have never shot a moose. I do however own two 7mm Rems, and I guess with the proper bullet one could harvest a moose with it. (Try staying in the 160 gr Partiton, or Barnes line). I am sure many guys on here would recommend something in the .300 or .338 lineup moreso. I am definatly not an expert on moose here, but just trying to help.

*If I were going on a Moose hunt, I would carry my 300 Remington Ultra mag. (Just my preference)

I have shot a few moose myself with 7mm bullets and I have seen a few more shot.I used the 140gr partition as did a friend of mine and the results were great.A partner of mine used the 140gr accubond this fall and the moose fell on the spotto a lung shot.If I still used the 7mmremmag for moose or elk however,I would be using the barnes tsx as it penetrates better than the partition and expands very reliably.

I've done quite a bit of moose hunting. Although I don't have one, I have hunted with guys who do - it is a very popular and effective moose gun. Can't go wrong, and it will be a great gun for any other NA eatable game (IMHO)

The 7mm Rem. Mag would be my first choice.

If you're going to make this a dedicated moose rifle look to the 338 Win. Mag. With a 250 gr. bullet this is an awesome moose round and can be used very effectively should you run into a large bear while moose hunting. There are a plethora of factory loads and although some will say the 250 gr. bullet isn't necessary and doesn't shoot as fast as the lighter weight bullets when moose hunting most shots are well under 200 yards and the 250 gr. shoot plently flat for that distance. The 338 can also be used on deer with 180 gr. loads that are available in factory form.

A 338 will tear up alot of meat on a deer. If you make a good shot it shouldn't make much of a difference, dead is dead, but if you makea gut shot or something you're gonna lose a ton of meat.

The 7mmremmag produces felt recoil that is easily handled by most shooters, however the 338winmag produces significantly more recoil, and does intimidate some shooters.Besides that, although moose are relatively large they are not difficult to kill and whilethe 338winmag does a good job, itis certainly not required for moose hunting.I actually find elk to be tougher than moose..

Believe me I have thought about the .338 and the .300 win mag ( & wsm) pretty hard. The thing is where I will be hunting there is a good possibility of shooting out to or beyond300 yards. (clearcut's in Northern Ontario). I really want something that I can shoot comfortably and is going to be relatively fast and flat.I'm not saying the other rounds are slow and stuff, but I have also found a mint Model 70 that's right in my price range, and that has a lot to do with my decision as well. I was looking at a Model 70 in .300 wsm originally.

I agree on the 7mm Rem. Mag. I prefer bullets in the 160 grain weight.
