RE: Remington 700 XCR or Weatherby Mark V
ORIGINAL: stubblejumper The barrel on the xcr appears to be the standard #3 contour that remington uses on all of it's magnum rifles. In other words about the same weight as a fluted #4 like on the accumark. However the 700 action is lighter than the mark V actionwhich will result in a more muzzle heavy balance than the weatherby rifles. 1. The Accumark has a Krieger Crietrion barrel which is heavier and stifferthan the Remington barrel. 2. The Accumark is over 1 pound heavier than the Remmington overallyetthe weatherby actionweighs less than 2 pounds. 3. The gun has a lightweight Monte Carlo stock and the barrels muzzle diameter is .705. If anything this gun will be muzzle heavy. I doubt that Stubble has ever handled an Accumark or he would not have made his "balance" statement. Rather than taking Stubbles statement as fact and ruling out the Accumark I would suggest that you handle one and judge for yourself. Letus know what you find. I would handle both guns and see what you like. |

Rather than taking Stubbles statement as fact and ruling out the Accumark I would suggest that you handle one and judge for yourself. Letus know what you find. I would handle both guns and see what you like. 1)The accumark does indeed have a criterion barrel measuring .705" at the muzzle compared to the remington barrel at .650".But when you consider the fact that the accumark barrel is fluted ,the weights are very similar. 2)The accumark is just over a pound heavier than the xcr but the mark V action weighs 50.5 oz (which is in excess of 3 pounds),compared to the 700 action at 38 ounces. These weights taken from the January 1996 edition of The Shooting Times page 38.So the weatherby action weighs over 3/4 of a pound more than the 700 action. 3).Thataccumark monte carlo stock is actuallya virtual copy of the h-s precision design with it's integral bedding block. Are you aware that the h-s precision stocks weigh about 34 ounces compared to the remington factory molded stocks at around 30 ounces. So there you have it ,similar weight barrels with a weatherby stock that is at least as heavy or heavier and the weatherby action weighs over 3/4 of a pound more than the 700 action.Which do you think would be more muzzle heavy? For the record,I did briefly own an accumark in 30-378 but after firing a friends accumark in 30-378,I sold mine unfired for a tidy profit since they were in short supply with a high demand at the time. |

RE: Remington 700 XCR or Weatherby Mark V
Regarding the Weatherby action weight:
Your Quote: "2)The accumark is just over a pound heavier than the xcr but the mark V action weighs 50.5 oz (which is in excess of 3 pounds),compared to the 700 action at 38 ounces. These weights taken from the January 1996 edition of The Shooting Times page 38.So the weatherby action weighs over 3/4 of a pound more than the 700 action. " http://www.weatherby.com/products/performance/markv_action.asp The Weatherby magnum action weights 35.9 ounces check the weatherby website link above. They actually show it on the digital scale with the readout out on the screen, including the bolt! That is nearly a 1 pound difference from what you are claiming.I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your stock weights are accurate (unlike the action weight) and the Weatherby stock is 4 oz heavier. That means the Accumark barrelweights approx 4.375 poundswhich is exactly 50% of the guns total weight. The Remingtons barrel is only 44% of the guns weight. Lets us compare: Gun Weight- Stock- Action = Barrel Weight Weatherby 8.75 34oz36 oz 4.375 lbs Remington 7.62530oz38 oz3.375 lbs Your quote Stubble: "So there you have it ,similar weight barrels with a weatherby stock that is at least as heavy or heavier and the weatherby action weighs over 3/4 of a pound more than the 700 action.Which do you think would be more muzzle heavy? ":eek: It would appear nearly all of the weight difference in the two guns is barrel weight. Would it not? Which gun would anyone think would be barrel heavy??? |

The Weatherby magnum action weights 35.9 ounces check the weatherby website link above. They actually show it on the digital scale with the readout out on the screen, including the bolt! That is nearly a 1 pound difference from what you are claiming. So let us readjust your calculations to account for this difference. Lets us compare: Gun Weight- Stock- Action = Barrel Weight Weatherby 8.75 34oz50.5 oz3.469lbs. Remington 7.62530oz38 oz3.375 lbs Recalculating the % of barrel weight for each we end up with 39.6% for the weatherby and 44.3% for the remington. Your quote Stubble: "So there you have it ,similar weight barrels with a weatherby stock that is at least as heavy or heavier and the weatherby action weighs over 3/4 of a pound more than the 700 action.Which do you think would be more muzzle heavy? ":eek: It would appear nearly all of the weight difference in the two guns is barrel weight. Would it not? Which gun would anyone think would be barrel heavy??? |

Scott, little doubt the man(stubblejumper) knows firearms and the shooting sports to the enth. I am not questioning your knowledge but rather an FYI. What I enjoy about Stubblejumper is while heknows hisfacts to a T he backs it with experience or real life comparisons. You may not agree with everything he says but be sured he isn't just spewing off data sheets when he gives you his opinion...to me that warrants some merit. In the end you must still form your own.
As to which one owned weatherby...still own 700's...nuff said! Let your hands, shoulder and fingers be the judge. |
RE: Remington 700 XCR or Weatherby Mark V
I have owned 700's in 30/06, .270, and 7mm. mag. All were nice and shot well. The one bolt actioncenterfire rifle that still resides in my gun safe, Weatherby Lazermark in .300 WBY mag. Pinpoint accurate, beautiful, and enough gun for anything in North America. You should handle and shoot both before you decide. Only you can determine what suits you the best.

RE: Remington 700 XCR or Weatherby Mark V
I don't have any experience with Weatherby rifles but I do like my Remington 700 XCR. Great rifle and shoots like a dream. Get one and you won't be disappointed.
