Ruger makes a better rimfire bolt than marlin or savage but it is more expensive. You can interchange the 22 mag and 17 HMR barrels though and it is a well built nice looking rifle with a 9 round rotary magazine. The savage and marlin are almost identical, I like the marlin a little better. We have a marlin 22 mag that shoots very well.

Marlin is known for making one of teh most accurate guns along with savage, ruger itsnt up to par with the marlins and davages but they are a better made rifle. I owna marlin 917vs and after changing out teh trigger sprin with one form a pen and shimming the trigger its a real shooter.

My 77/22lr will shoot 1/2" groups at 50 yards and it will put 10 shots under a nickel at 25 yards. My M77 300 WSM and M77 .223 will both shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards as well. I would not hesitate to buy a Ruger for accuracy reasons, I have seen way to many shoot sub MOA groups at 100 yards. The 77/22s and 77/17s have the same type of trigger as the full size 77s and a trigger job can be done just as easily as the M77 if you want a lighter trigger.

I would buy the Ruger M-77 Laminated stock, target grey barrel.
This rifle looks like a standard size hunting rifle, not a varmit rifle.
I own a 22-mag & 25-06 in this model, both are shooters.

I have the Savage 93R17 FVSS and I also can get 1/2” groups at 50 yards but put it to the task at 100 yards and the groups get allot bigger. It’s a nice little rifle and fun to shoot but I would rather have something else.

you already have a .22 and .243. get something in the middle i would go with a .223. the .17 are fun to shoot but they just don't havemuch more than speed going for them. a friend of mine was thinking about a .17 until he pulled the trigger on my ultra varmint. thoughts of the .17 went out the window.

I'm with wolf killer. My Ruger 77/17 is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned. It'll put three shots in a"ragged hole" at 50 yds. Little more money than the others but is certainly worth it.
