RE: scope for savage
Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40, about 175.00 at www.theopticzone.com.

RE: scope for savage
Swampman has suggested a good scope. If you don't want to spend that much go for the Bushnell Legend 3-9X40 for around $129. From looking at the Bushnell literature I believe this is the same scope without the rainguard feature. The 3200 model is certainly worth every bit of $175.

RE: scope for savage
Yah i kinda looked into Bushnell, does anyone know what scope comes on their package guns? Cuz if it's a decent scope and/or one i'm considering, i'm sure it would cut down cost.

RE: scope for savage
Usually a lower end piece of glass worth about $30. Don't forget to factor the price of the bases and rings into the price.
|
RE: scope for savage
don't forget to look into the simmons line of scopes. you get alot of scope for your money. :)

RE: scope for savage
i think that i'm going to get either the package gun from savage 16fxp3 which is synthetic stock and a stainless stell barrel, or one of the 12 series carmint rifles in whcih case i would need to get a scope, mounts and rings....any suggestions?

RE: scope for savage
Burris fullfield 3x9 scopes are an excellent optic costing $169 at natchez shooters supply(natchezss.com?) they also have a ballistic plex reticle. This will definetely be my next mid-powered scope.

RE: scope for savage
I purchased a Savage 16 fxp3 in 270 wsm this past winter and have been very pleased with the rifle. I did not want the package deal but I really wanted the 270 wsm and it was the only one they had in stock. The package scope was a Simmons 8 point (3-9x40) which you can buy for 24.95 online. I removed the scope, bases and rings and replaced the setup with Leupold bases and rings, and a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40. I am extremely happy with this rifle and scope combination.

RE: scope for savage
I have a Savage model 12 fv .204 with the varmint barrel, I put a Smith-Wesson 6x24 target scope and it will shoot 1 ragged hole at a 100.

RE: scope for savage
Simmons Aetec Or Swift Premiere. On a 223 the Bushnell Trophy should work very well too. Wearver bases and rings will hold up forever or longer on a Savage 223. I had Weaver rings on my 416 Rem Mag for years without a seconds problem.

RE: scope for savage
I mentioned in another forum that Bass Pro Shops have Simmons 3-10x44 44 Mag Scopes on sale for $80, which is a pretty nice scope at a pretty good price. (Lifetime warranty, too.) Closeout deals are out there...

RE: scope for savage
I'd get a Leupold scope.
|
RE: scope for savage
I havethree Leupolds and three Aetecs. The Leupolds will not out shoot my Simmons Aetecs. I can now buy about eight Aetecs for what the three Leupolds cost me. Now that I have expierenced the Aetecs performance I won't be buying and more Leups. Unless the bring their price down to where the other imported parts scopes sell for.;)

RE: scope for savage

RE: scope for savage
I might suggest watching www.natchezss.com They sent out a email of Reburbished scope at a reasonable price just the other day.Watch Ebay for a used Leupold. You cansend it to the factory and have it gone through.

RE: scope for savage
What are you planning on doing with it? And what sort of scope are you looking for? Long range accuracy or game hunting, or target? If you want something for longer ranges and very accurate I would be looking at spending a bit more money. You might get buy with 150, but that would be my bottom limit. You would want something with a higher magnafication and an adjustable objective like varvmint or target scope. With these kind of scopes you get what you pay for most of the time. Not that a cheaper scope cant' be accurate, they just don't have very good optics and are not real fun to look thru at high powers and longer distances.
If your talking about general hunting like dogs and deer or something at 100 yards then a typical 3-9 should work pretty well I would think. I would look at stuff like Nikon, bushnell Trophy and above, simmons 44 mag, aetec or a whitetail expedition if you can find one and some of the others mentioned in this thread. If you can afford a leupold get one, they are nice scopes, but not worth the money in my opinion, especially the lower priced ones. Of course if get mad and beat it against a tree they will replace it. The service is second to none for sure. Don't discount the cabela's stuff either. I own an alaskan guide scope and it is excellent. They are made by major manufactures for cabela's, but the sales people don't know which ones. You can sort of compare them with other models and guess though. Mine looks alot like a Nikon. I would stay away from the combo deals, the scopes are crap most of the time. I wouldn't put one on a .22 let alone a .223. I would see if you could figure out what model of scope it comes with and look up the price. You never know, you might get lucky. Most I have seen are like 30-50 dollar bushnells. If that's all you can afford they will work though. I had a 50 dollar bushnell on my muzzle loader for a long time and it worked great. And years ago I had the same basic scope on a savage 30-06 with no problems. However compared to what you can get for a bit more money they are not worth it in optic quality to me. Good luck, Paul |
RE: scope for savage
I would stay away from the lower endBushnells(Trophy, Banner, Legend). They are good scopes butBushnell will not stand behind them if something happens. No matter what the paper work says they only have a one year warranty. Call Bushnell and ask, they hope you won't. Simmons, Nikon, and Mueller all have lifetime warranties and will honer them. A scope should last a lifetime and when it doesn't, it should be replaced. Warranty and customer service is everything when purchasing a scope. It is almost up there with quality.
