Default My blind granddaughter....

Hi guys. I haven't normally posted here, but I have finally found a reason to. My granddaughter was born blind. We are now searching for anything that will make shooting enjoyable and productive for her. We really want for her experience the feeling of shooting, but having a result for herself would be even better. Any ideas?

There is a martial technique where you learn to blind fight. (ie, strike in total darkness.) Our ears are fairly good at locating the direction of something. You target by listening, and stike from your body center towards the target. It works surprisingly well. I think there would be a pistol application as long as it had a natural point.

To test this process, click your fingers and tell your daughter to punch toward the sound. It works best if she takes the time to center her body toward the sound and then punch out. Same thing with a pistol, except, we need something besides mom out there being the noisy target.

I am almost in the same boat as you. My oldest was born legally blind. He can see (about 20/100) in a very, verynarrow field of vision. Trying to teach him to shoot was challenging. He does agood job and even managed to get a decent mule deer last year.

You might also try some exploding targets since they give immediate feedback. www.tannerite.com

Huntgrl,
There is a gentleman in the town close to where we live who was blinded by a exploding tire.He deeply loved the outdoors. He was heart broken at the thought of never hunting again.
Well to make a long story short his brothers ended up searching for away to get him back into it.What they have done is put a side mount on his guns. They aim the gun from over his shoulder and he shoots with their guidence. They have even started doing this with bow and arrow and he has been quite successful.I had a chance to visit with him at a school function a few years ago and he realy is a extrodinary.
