Default Owning A Crossbow in NY

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays folks!

This is my first time on the forums.

Just a quick question relating to crossbows in New York. I know you can't hunt with one (just yet). However, I bow hunt in New Jersey and would like to cross bow hunt there as well. I live in New York City and my licensed firearms dealer has informed me that cross bows are legal to own. I just wanted to confirm this and was wondering if anyone knew of an on-line resource.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Illegal to use in NY, but still legal to own. For instance a rifle of any sort is illegal to use when deer hunting in Ohio. They can only use shotgun slugs to hunt, however can still own and shoot rifles. I don't think you'll have any problem with owning it.

"New Jersey is becoming the 14th state to allow crossbows in all its archery seasons, and New York and Pennsylvania are considering it. Only three states do not allow them at all. In at least one state, Massachusetts, it remains illegal to even own a crossbow."

It doesn't list what other 2 states are illegal to even own one, but I do not believe it is NY.

Thanks!
I know in NY, you can hunt with one ONLY if you meet certain disability requirements. I just wanted to confirm before I go buy one. My authorized firearms dealer here in NYC is a retired NY Police Officer and has a great reputation (deals mostly with NYPD). If he told me that he can get me one and that they are legal to own, I would tend to think he knows what he is talking about. However, I just wanted to see it in writing.

Thanks again.

No problem, yea it is legal to own. I read that you can get permits in NY if you are disabled to use one. There was one that even stated there was a permit that if you had a certain disability that you could have a crossbow where all you had to do was blow into a tube to shoot it. Pretty cool stuff.

Sorry, you have some incorrect info. Your link is misinformed, not your fault. Pa just completed or is completing their 1st xbow season, full inclusion.

As for Ma:
Massachusetts

Crossbows for handicap with permit.
http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/regul..._abstracts.pdf

To the best of my knowledge, xbows are not illegal in any state, and are allowed for some form of deer hunting in 49 of the 50. Some states have full inclusion w/ archery season, some partial, some only in gun seasons or for handi-capped, ect. It's a rapidly changing confusing quagmire, but again to the best of my knowledge, the only state w/ no provision for disabled is Oregon.

NY is next closest w/ a breath tube trigger only. Got one finger that wiggles in NY, no xbow permit. This made big news a year or so ago when Mark O'Brien, an Iraqui war vet that lost an arm and a leg over there was denied a handi-cap permit in Ny.

Thank NYB for the draconian stuff xbow related in NYS.

Do yourself a favor and go check out some x-bows before you buy one. If you are in NYC you should go over to Bergen County, NJ and start looking. I believe Targeteers sporting goods in Saddle Brook carries Ten Point and excalibur x-bows. I am pretty certain you do not need a NJ firearmes ID card to purchase one since they are considered archery equipment. I own 2 excalibur crossbows which I bought online. I did a lot of research on them before I decided to buy one from an online source. I don't think you can get one online cause I believe most online sources will not ship an x-bow to an individual in NYC. Good Luck

Thank you, that is good to know. There are a number of places in NJ that sell them and you are correct, they are considered just another piece of archery equipment.
