Rail Lube question

I'm curious and am hoping I can get an explanation here. Some crossbows have teflon impreganated barrels like Darton and Desert Stryker while other models like Parker have teflon slides on top of the arrow tracks. I noticed that Ten Points and Barnetts and Horton don't seem to have this particular feature. Why is that. Also, what is the best type of rail lube to use. My friend uses a teflon spray rather than rail lube. Is this a viable substitute?

When I looked at the Ten Points a few days ago I noticed that therewas no teflon on the rail and no mention of it in the literature that I was reading. In fact, it seemed that the barrel and the rail were all one solid piece, unlike the Darton xbows I've looked at. I saw the section on rail lube and began wondering. Is having the teflon a definite advantage over NOT having it or is it just a gimmick?

For what it's worth...I don't use anything. Just keep it clean...and
I've found that just keeping the serving well waxed works as well as anything.

On plastic rails...don't know.
Despite the as advertized "Teflon Impregnated"...hard anodozed surfaces are very slippery as the BowTech and Darton rail is.
Darton strings will live a VERY long life because of the light string to rail load.
Though I do have a Quad 400...as I noted I just keep the serving waxed...I really don't shoot it much so I kan't really comment on serving/string life.

I use a Dry Film Teflon Spray. I've found it to be terrific. The barrel is slick as can be after spraying it. I wipe of the excess in the barrel channel after spraying. I re-spray after 100 shots. Serving wear in almost
non-existent. It drys within seconds so it does not collect dust balls, etc.

Parker says not to use any lube on their Teflon rails. I find that Jig-A-Loo, a dry spray on lube I purchase at WalMart, works great on rails of my Excalibur and to lube arrows os they don't stick in foam targets.

Just wax the string, serving an all and you'll have done good.

Da Griz: Wherecan you get that Dry Film Teflon Spray?

The best I've found is a dry lube called "Jigaloo". Spray on lightly and wipe off with a paper towel and it's instantly dry and does not attract dust particles. You can get it at Home Depot or Wal-Mart. It has a very faint citrus smell as compared to some of the strong smelling teflon sprays. I never use oils on crossbow barrel decks. Jigaloo alsoworks great on carbon arrows, making them easy to pull from 3D targets.

Jig-A-Loo works great. Goes on wet, quickly dries to a nearly invisable film, leaving just a bit of a sheen. Great for cleaning the entire bow. Thanks for the tip Moon..

Iwould try it for cleaning the entire bow but if I did it would probably keep slipping out of my hands:D:-)

some people use BREAKFREE on their rails, its dry lube.

breakfree is only lube we used on our bretta shotguns on piston area.
SHEATH from birchwoods casey is only thing we use inside barrel and chamber.

DaGriz, would'nt the Teflon spray smell? Game smell it?

DaGriz 05-26-2008 03:13 PM

RE: Rail Lube question

There is absolutely no odor to the spray I use. If you use any type of oil to lubricate your trigger it will give off an odor, Your body gives off odor. It is virtually impossible to remain odorless.

The teflon spray is odorless.Even it it wasn't , it would not besuch that it would spook the deer.Sounds and movement will dothat for you.

I ordered and received a can of the teflon dry lube that Dagriz is using. (By the way, thanks for the tip,Dagriz). I use it on my ProFusion (vertron rails) and it works wonderfully well. Very slick and dry. I've yet to smell it. Great stuff. I CAN smell a slight oil odor when I use the Ten Point rail lube (microlon). Until I learn otherwise, the Teflon Dry Lube from Share Corp. is what I'll be using.

I use Crisco, the non butter flavored kind. (I started using it yrs ago when shooting blackpowder pistols)

odorless, $3 buys a 5lb tub that will last you for over a decade.

Just a little dab will do you. Put some in a small lip balm container, 35mm film roll or like me in a old No. 11 cap container.

I have put over 500 shots on my string and still looks brand new..

What about vasaline petroleum jelly ?

DaGriz 06-02-2008 04:59 PM

RE: Rail Lube question

My Personal Experience is that using anything sticky like vaseline, Crisco, grease, oil, etc on the barrel/rail winds up causing hair balls, dust balls, other grit and grime to adhere to the rail. Makes for a mess and could possibly get into your trigger mechanism. A dry film lubricant makes life easier, No mess , no fuss,

Teflon spray works absolutely great for me. Jigaloo works well, S&W Dry Filmlube workswell from what I read, but I have no experience with those.

I really didn't buy the Jigaloo for the crossbow. I use it on carbon shafts but it works well on everything I've tried it on. I was down at the farm the other day and was trying to raise the windows to let the house get some fresh air :-) The windows were sticking bad. Jigaloo to the rescue:-) You can push them up with one finger.

i agree with you.
my rifle stinks of oil and bore cleaner but i have as of yet to see it spook a deer and i had some big buck within 10 ft of me while standing in laural.

i still smoke my clothes with firein yard with pine needles/cones day before i head to woods.they wont let you do it in woods now, used to be fun to do that before you walked into woods in morning.:D

i use NO sprays etc from store.junk in my opinion but i am from old school.

human odor scares a buck not gun oil or crisco, peanut butter or teflon spray.
