How to handle a spined deer??
In a past season I spined a little fork horn. It sounded like two pieces of 2X4 hitting together when that arrow hit him. Well he went down and was thrashing his front end about trying to drag his butt out of there.
I watched this distasteful sight for 10 minutes befor I had to stick him again. It was really not very pleasant. Will a spine shot deer die on his own or is it always gonna be along and unsettling experience. My bud swears he would have just climbed down and pulled out his knife to deliver the coup de grace. I wish he had been there as I would have like to seen him get his butt kicked by half a deer. Could I carry a pistol Xbow just to finish him off or would a blowgun work better. |

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Not even a really fast pistol Xbow??? The problem with shooting a deer down and thrashing is that it' tough to hit them cleanly the second time and with the adrenalinepumping they become much harder to kill. If it ever happened again I would climb down and move in..
Yes, I did just get up from a nap....I guess the answer is to hit them right the first time. |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
That happend to me back in the mid 80's,it wasnt a good site at all it, took me afew sec/min to get down andthen I shothim again. But yes the best thing to do Is shoot them again right away......its can be tuff but its the only ethical thing to do.....

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
I have to go to work and maybe will tell you about my spine shot deer once! That totally sucked! I would also pay money to see a big bad hunter go up to a thrashing deer to slit its throat and be the man that he says he is!

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Thats a bad sight to see. Want me to tell about the time i shot a fat nanny in the eyeball? She just fell dead, didn't even twitch![8D]

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
been there done it, best thing to do is a quick follow up shot, the deer deserves the best we can deliver, sometimes things just happen , not like we planed or expected, wether it was our falt or not, get that follow up shot in the boiler as quick as you can. and strive for perfection,"if you truly love the sport then you truly love the animal" I love mine right next to the taters and gravey. good luck and don"t forget to pick your spot on the deer. fishead

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
unfortunately i had the same thing happen to me years ago. i shot a second arrow from the tree stand. (bad move). the deer was blatting and the shafts were whacking together. i got down from the stand and managed to put an arrow through the lungs. it was a beautiful 8 point that died hard. the whole thing was sickening and was one of the worst things that ever happened to me during a hunt. iconsidered quitting bowhunting. took it as a learning experience and rededicated myself to making good shots. hang in there.[:'(]

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Your post brought back memoties of past kills my first deer a spike buck
I was a greenhorn and all I had heard was stick them so I laid down my 30-30 and got my knife and leaned over the deer when the blade started in his neck he kicked with his front legs picking me up and throwing me several yards I then shot him again. I shot a big 9 point which dropped on me and i hit the spine with my compound he drug off on his front legs, when I got to him he charged me and I ran a circle with him right behind me before I could get another arrow in him. Another last year I spine shot a doe with my excal.and put another in her fast. I'd say if it happens again a fast second shot. Martin |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Planter, I spined the buck I shot last year, actually it went in high in the shoulder, must have snapped the spine and took out a lung. I immediately knocked another arrow and sent it into the lungs. I wouldn't have hesitated to put a third arrow into it if necessary.
We owe it to them for the quickest we can make it happen. |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
no blowgun no psitol crossbow to finish off a dear! MAYBE a .22LR but why not shoot him again with the crossbow? [/quote] Isnt it illegal to carry a firearm while bow hunting????????? |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
yes it is but i am saying those two weapons would not be suitible to finish off a dear
|
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Geez.. I'm not really gonna start carrying a Pistol Xbow as a side arm or carry a 9 foot blow gun.
I of course know I have to shoot another arrow it was 10 minutes and probably much less before the thrashing deer gave me anothergood shot and once they have been hit once they become much harder to kill even with a good shot. I AM very pleased that all of you guys found the whole scene involving spine shot deer was verydistasteful.I got over it but if it doesn't bother you something is missing. Ihave enough respect for the deer that I OWE it a clean death. It's funny how the Anti'sknow nothing about the woods. They get there limited info from fancy but purdy magazines. I know most of thefloura and fauna in the woods I hunt and see and know things those book readers will ever know. I picked up two nice sheds this week along with a really neat box turtle shell. Also even brought home a yellow feather of a bird I can't ID. Lame?? sure it is, but I know and care about my game and the woods they live in as much as any non-hunting clown. PS.... If I shot my dear with a blow gun she would give me a beating and I would have to pick the dart out of her butt. Man would she be pissed.. |

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
In that case tote a 16 oz. ballpeen also:D.
|
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Smoke old fella. I can usually decipher your text but what the heck is "esle cept its last poop" ??
Using a mall is so old school. Today's high tech hunter carries a nail gun with a small compressor... I have seen a small steer hit in the forehead with a long handle 16 lb sledge. The guy stood above the beefand POW down it went.Just like a brick sh^%house. |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
It be a misspelled word, else![:o]I shall change it sorry!:D
|
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Young fella i am to old to drag an air compressor and nail gun plus a gen. to run it with after a spine shot deer!:DSo either i will shoot it again or it and i will dance together in thar woods, but it ain't getting away nor suffer long![8D]
|
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
come on now... a nail gun with a small compressor?
old school.... any self respecting high tech hunter knows that this is the only way to go when it comes to dispatching spine shot deer... http://www.paslode-cordless.com/ |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
I dont think I am as old as smokepole so I went ahead and bought a new compressor and a nail gun instead of a crossbow. I am starting a new company...Call me for all your spined deer needs...I will work for backstrap and tenderloin!!!!!!

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
I want to spine one so I can call Smoke to come up and wrestle it. I could sell tickets Smoke and we can split 60/40. Just the image of Mike trying to break the deer's neck has got me laughing. Me... I'm not grappling with any deer unless it's dead but that's a different topic altogether..

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
I shot a 9 pt. with my recurve back in 75 and it went over the top of lungs and hit part of spine and came out the other side. I ran over to him as he was lunging up and grabbed his rack. The dance was on, took me couple of min. to get my legs around his body behind his front legs. Just like i was riding a horse but we were on the ground going around in circles. I finally got a good grip on rack brought his head back and to the right to close to a 180 and got hand on his muzzle and finally broke his neck! They be tough son i was 25 at the time. Now i am too old fer that, just shoot'em.

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
I did it last yr to a doe on opening day of muzzle loading. She was completely paralyzed from the neck back. She laid there for a few seconds makinga littlenoise after the shot and then nothing. I waited 20 minutes and got out of my stand. I walked up to her laying in the weeds and about 2 yards from her she lifted her head and just looked at me. [:o]I felt so bad not knowing she was still alive. I quickly placed a second shot in her. I only hope she wasn't suffering.
Walking back to get my truck I was playing the whole thing over in my head. It was a 30 yard shot and I missed that much. Target practicing I was drilling the bullseye with my open sights up to 75 yards. Getting to my truck I saw my rear sight to be way out of wack. I could only blame myself, and after that day I always check my sights multiple times over the days hunt. I sometimes carry my handgun with during bow and muzzle season. I can do this in VA cause I have my permit to carry. Might be an option for some others. |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
I'm not sure it would be legal to use a handgun to dispatch a wounded deer during bow season and could be misconstrued by the warden. I'm not even sure that with a permit you could carry a sidearm during bow season.??? Sure not in this state.
I really have no idea but I can't even use a muzzleloader like an Encore in which I could sneak a nice scoped rifle barrel of some sort on. |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Thats a BIG NO NO in Minnesota while archery huntin......Except for Bear..

RE: How to handle a spined deer??
I have spine shot a deer twice and each time I hated that it happened but it did the first time was with a bow, the deer was dragging it's self with it's front legs so I climbed down instantly and sat on the deers back and pulled the knife out and finished the job all of about 2 mins or less. The 2nd time it was with a shot gun and slug and the deer was in the same condition but offered me a quick shot to finish the job.
Personally I hated it each time and each time it was my fault no the deer. I hope it never happens again. It is not very safe to try and cut a deers throut when this has happened but if it is the quickest way then I am up for taking the risk but it the deer has a big rack I believe I would wait for the chance on a second shot. By saying big rack I don't mean it tosound like if was a wall hanger I would pull the knife but I do value my life. |
RE: How to handle a spined deer??
Back when we had Check Stations I spined a Buck with my Crossbow, cut his throat.Took him up to Check him. They called the Agent on me because its throat was cut.Because they was taught that if an Archery kill came in with its throat cut it was sign of being shot with a Firearm.
I Spine shot a Ram running away from me,with Muzzleloader. He was laying there breathing.I didn't want to mess up the Mount,so I wasn't going to cut his throat. The guy that was with me said give him time he would go ahead and die.I said no,I reloaded and shot him again just behind the Leg. big rockpile |
