Anyone up for the 1,000 shot challenge this year?
Just like last year, I'm challenging myself to shoot 1000 shots with the crossbow and see how few misses I can shoot. Last year I shot from 15-30 yds (I did it in sequence, ie- 30,15,25,20,30,15,25,20, etc.,so that I would not shoot from the same place twice and that I would have the same number of shots from each distance). My target was a 9" circle- outside of that is a miss. This year I would like to increase the challenge for myself and shoot out to35 yds. with the same 9" target, all shot off-hand. Last year I missed 8 out of the thousand shots. I hope to do better this year. Would anyone like to join me in this? I had a few takers last year, but if I remember right, only 2 or 3 finished. Oh, I'll probably try to usejust onebolt again for the whole thing. I thought it was kinda cool to do that last year and then get my deer with the same bolt.

RE: Anyone up for the 1,000 shot challenge this year?
Well, I'm shootin' good so far. My first 100 shots went without a miss on my 9" circle. Last year I wanted to keep it simple so I just had one sight pin and would hold it high or low depending on my distance. It worked pretty well but Iknow I'm shooting better with 4 pins- set for 10,20,30,and 40 yds. I also seem to shoot better with both eyes open. I think that I had a tendency to drop the crossbow after the shot (and occasionally during the shot) to see where the bolt went. When I keep both eyes open, I can watch it fly all the way to the target without moving the crossbow. So far all of my shots have been with one bolt. We'll see if it lasts for the full 1,000 shots. Is there anyone else out there that wants to take the challenge? I guess I may have started practicing a bit soon for most hunting seasons but I want to hunt pronghorn in Aug.- only 4 months away!!!

Wish I could do some 3-D shoots. I used to go with the longbow but I don't know any around here that allow crossbows.

RE: Anyone up for the 1,000 shot challenge this year?
This shoot is the closest one to me, 116 miles round trip. I enjoy it and someone else to talk to and shoot with. When i leave here i will be like you no where to shoot 3-D's unless i get lucky.

RE: Anyone up for the 1,000 shot challenge this year?
So far so good. I've taken 250 shots and had one miss. It was so close I almost counted it a hit (about 1/4" outside the 9" circle), but I have to be honest- it was a miss from 35 yds. Hopefully I'll be able to keep this up and have just a few more misses for the 1000 shots. Lots of fun and great practice for hunting. Hopefully I'll be chasing prairie goats in just over 3 months. Anyone else (beside Smokepole)want to take the challenge?

RE: Anyone up for the 1,000 shot challenge this year?
I would like to join but I have a couple of questions. First what type of target do you recomend? and second I need some info about rope cockers. I am disabled and need to use a cocker. Mine keeps sliding together and stops in front of the trigger slot. Any suggestions?

RE: Anyone up for the 1,000 shot challenge this year?
fnicoletti, I use a bag target (burlap) filled with plastic (I like 4 or 6 mil. sheet plastic). It will take thousands of shots. I get my bags from a local coffee shop (it smells good for a while). I've found that with mycrossbow I have to packthe baga little tighter with plastic than with my recurve and longbow to keep the bolts from burying in the bag. I bet my plastic that I've used has taken about 8,000 shots from all types of bows over the last 6 years. I just get a new bag but use the same plastic. As far as the cocker question, I don't use one so I'm not sure how to keep it from sliding in. Maybe someone else could chime in with a suggestion.

I'm halfway there. I just took my 500th shot this morning. Still just have the one miss...guess I'm getting this crossbow shooting thing down. I'm doing much better than last year. Anyone else have hundreds of shots done yet?

RE: Anyone up for the 1,000 shot challenge this year?
600 shots now and 3 misses. Guess I'm getting a bit careless. On one of these misses I used the wrong pin (dummy!). I'll have to bear down and concentrate for the last 400 shots and see if I can make all of them count. I would really encourage you guys to get out and shoot more shots. For me it really makes me know my weapon and teaches me what I should look out for in a hunting situation (and it's a lot of fun). Shooting this much makes me appreciate how easy it is to work on my recurve crossbow (Horton Stag) because every 400 shots or so I need to reserve my string. It just takes 10 minutes. My buddy with a compound crossbow hasn't shot it for months because we haven't had time to take it apart (we're a bit scared to without a press) and replace some nylon washers that are broken. Anyway, I guess that may be a reason for compound crossbowers not to shoot a lot (being difficult to restring or reserve the string) but if you can, shoot lots!! It willgive you that extra confidence in your equipment when you need to takea tricky shot or your heart is going 1000 bpm. This is also a good argument if someone says that learning a crossbow is too easy. I don't know many compound shooters that practice shoot a thousand shots before going hunting with their bow. Even though my crossbow was fairly accurate right out of the box, it took several hundred shots (just like it would with a compound) for me to feel comfortable with its performance, trajectory, etc. and for me to get my shooting form down so that It's consistent. So,
Get out and shoot!!!...if you can :^) I'm hoping to hunt pronghorn in Wyoming in Aug so I have just 2 months more practice before hunting. I'm still shooting the same bolt for all my practice shots. Hope I can use it to deflate a goats lungs in Aug. It's holding up well so far. |
RE: Anyone up for the 1,000 shot challenge this year?
I have one miss and have shot 225 times. No rush fer me as Sept. is still in the distance.
