weasel hunting

I read some thing somewhere about weasels. Does anyone know anything about weasels? Are they really bold and tough or are they like sniveling little creatures? I just want to know because I think I saw one recently but it was a while ago.

Dnk: I think they are nocturnal. Most people trap them. Don't think they are worth much, but often turn up in mink sets. They were a problem in Illinois, dang chicken killers!!! You gonna hunt em w/ xbow?? Probably need little broadheads, lol. [And red lens light, if legal]

I don't know much about them, Only ever seen one..
A frat house in London, some guys dropped one down the chimney into their buddies (?) house, and the thing never made it past the flu, had to come out through the fireplace.
I don't know what they act like in the wild, but I do know that if you ever find one thats already mad, I would vote on the bold and tough.

I know they are vermon and they stink because they have glands like a skunk. I was wondering because in Kitchener a person I know has a chicken farm and they get into the big building and kill a whole wack of birds. I know that as a general rule that they get poisoned but I was wondering if anyone ever wacked them with a weapon? Hey Squirrel, you live on a farm. Ever see one?

Fishers weasels and martins are mostly trapped but you can pink at them with your xbow. I shot a couple of fishers that were raiding the chiken coops on my cousin's place. Used my Vixen with judo heads , kills 'em quick and not as messy.

Last question about this, well maybe not, do weasels smell bad enough to smell when they are hiding or not seen? So if one was in the middle of a bunch of smelly chickens does the weasel stench out power the chicken stink?Correct me if I am wrong but they smell like skunks don't they?:)

My first experience w/ weasels came at the tender age of about 5 or 6. I was at my grand parents along long time ago, lol. Went to help Granny get the eggs and there were a few dead chickens and a weasel in the chicken house. Can't remember where she got her old gnarled hands on the garden hoe, but vividly recall her chasing the weasel around the chicken house w/ hoe. There were chickens flying every where, dust and chicken crap getting flung every where and still Granny would hoe, hoe, hoe after that weasel. Can't even remember who won, Granny or the weasel, lol. Some how I think this may have scarred me for life, as ever since that day, every time Christman comes around and some Santa anywhere says "Ho, Ho, Ho," I still see Granny and her hoe chasing that weasel.

Definitely check with your game regs, weasel are considered "fur bearing" in most areas and may have different rules for taking them.

A neighbor of mine used to have ferrets, which are weasels, and even "descented" they stunk a little. Whenever a domestic weasel set up camp and started to scope outmy late grandpappy'schicken house he'd turn loose what he called his "weasel dog", usually a beagle. He explained the training process for making such a specialized critter as follows: "Boy, what you do is git yerself a half growed beagle pup and put him in a rain barrel, then ya live trap a weasel and put him in with the pup and hold the lid down tight. You'll hear a gawdawful racket for awhile, then it'll git real quiet in that barrel. Once it goes quiet ya lift the lid and see who won, if'n it's the weasel ya shoot it, but if'n it's the pup he'll be a mite tattered but he'll also hate weasels for the rest of his life."

He was right, every beagle he ever had hated them and would mercilessly track them down if they caught the slightest whiff of one in the breeze.

I am not sure about chickens, but I have seen other experiences with different animals. If a weasel is with a group of nice bucks the smell of dominant old wise bucks can cover up the smell of a weasel in a hurry. If a enough bucks are in the group and just think of the does and what they need to be doing as a core group, they can actually walk all over the weasel and not even know he is there. I have seen it done!

Like a turd. The man that gave me permission failed to tell me that he only owns the back half of the woods which is so thick you can barely walk through them. The front half about landed me in jail. I took my son back there with me and about fifteen minutes later and elderly man "my neighbor" came stomping through the woods to tell me that he was the only one aloud to hunt there and that he called the sheriff and will let the land owner know as well. I thought the guy was going to have a heart attack. My son is eight and didn't quite know what was going on. I did my best to stay calm and explaine that I had been given permission but didn't realize the woods were owned by two different people. It didn't help.

Two things saved that moron a but whooping. His age and my son being there.

RE: weasel hunting

Weasels are mammals in the genus Mustela of the Mustelidae family. Originally, the name "weasel" was applied to one species of the genus, the European form of the Least Weasel (Mustela nivalis). Early literary references to weasels, for example their common appearances in fables, refer to this species rather than to the genus as a whole, reflecting what is still the common usage in Britain. In technical discourse, however, as in American usage, the term "weasel" can refer to any member of the genus, or to the genus as a whole. Of the 16 extant species currently classified in the genus Mustela, 10 have "weasel" in their common name. Among those that do not are the stoat, the two species of mink, and the polecats or ferrets.

Weasels vary in length from 15 to 35 centimeters (6 to 14 inches), and usually have a light brown upper coat, white belly and black fur at the tip of the tail; in many species, populations living at high latitudes moult to a white coat with black fur at the tip of the tail in winter. They have long slender bodies, which enable them to follow their prey into burrows. Their tails are typically almost as long as the rest of their bodies. As is typical of small carnivores, weasels have a reputation for cleverness and guile.

Weasels feed on small mammals, and in former times were considered vermin since some species took poultry from farms, or rabbits from commercial warrens. Certain species of weasel and ferrets, have been reported to perform the mesmerising weasel war dance, after fighting other creatures, or acquiring food from competing creatures. In folklore at least, this dance is particularly associated with the stoat.

Where it lives
The weasel can be found almost anywhere in Canada (the coast, the mountains, the prairies and the far north). The weasel will move into a den of an animal that it has killed.

Babies
In April, two to ten babies are born in a burrow. The nest is lined with fur from animals that the weasel has killed.

The mother watches them closely and takes good care of them. In about five weeks their eyes are open. Young weasels begin to hunt when they are about two months old.

Appearance
The weasel has a tiny face, sharp teeth and claws, and a tail with black fur at the tip. In winter it is white and in summer it is brown.

The short-tailed weasel is a tiny animal, only 15 to 23 cm long.

Food
It hunts for rabbits, rats, birds, frogs, ground squirrels and pika ( a small rodent that lives in the mountains) . It eats hundreds of meadow mice. Weasels that live in the north also feed on Arctic hare and lemming.

The weasel can find the open entrance to an animal's tunnel and hunt the animal underground.

The weasel ususally hunts at night. It kills its prey by biting it at the back of the neck.

Chicken farmers do not like the weasel. It can kill several chickens at a time. But weasels are useful animals because they eat many rats and mice.

Adaptation
The weasel may be small but it is a good fighter and moves in a flash. It is a silent hunter and can approach without a sound, then rush upon its prey.

The weasel's coat changes colour. The brownish summer coat turns white for the winter. Just the tip of the tail stays black.

Some people say that a weasel smells worse than the skunk ( because of its musk glands ).

The slender (thin) body allows it to enter underground burrows.

Enemies
Snakes, hawks and owls kill the weasel. Weasels are trapped for their lovely fur.

Interesting facts
The weasel does not have many friends. Animals much bigger than it do not dare come near. Some say the weasel will kill without reason even though it is not hungry. It is not afraid to fight a bear or a porcupine.

Weasels are as curious as racccons. They look under every bush and sneak into holes.

Ferrets and minks are cousins of the weasel.
