Excalibur Pheonix Vs Horton HD 175

I am new to crossbow hunting but have narrowed my search down to these two bows for next season. Does anyone own one of these and if so what does it have over another. Also open to any other suggestions under 750.00. Thanks

Under the 2 you listed I would have to say the Excalibur unless you plan on doing a lot of spot and stalking, then maybe the Horton. as far as other suggestions look at the TenPoint / SixPoint linup, I think you will find most on here will agree that Excalibur and TenPoint/SixPoint are the top manufactures.. also I would wait and look at the 2007 linup from both and you might be able to pick up a good deal on a 2006 modle when the proshops decide to clear out inventory for the incoming new modles..

While I don't know much if any about the Horton, I can tell you alot about my Phoenix. Of my three Excals, it's my "go to" bow. It's hard to beat for $349, [bare bow]

Ferget that Horton, Excal Phoenix is fine as frog hair! Only other CB i would get is Ten Pt. Pro-Fusion or Titan and have its trigger polished to let pull slick![8D]

Friend save yer money up and don't even waste it on a Dorton, ever since they started building them fer wal-mart. Their CB's went downhill, Excals and Ten Pt. are the best made.

Well I am glad I posted. I was looking at a 10-point pro fusion at bass pro and I still like the pheonix. On the Pro Fusion is a Accu Draw really worth 200 dollars. Bass pro has it for 599 without accu draw and 799 with it. I understand what it does but is worth that much. The rope draws are around 25. Thanks for all the info. Excellent site

RE: Excalibur Pheonix Vs Horton HD 175

The Accudraw is definately worth it,, if you have any deficulties or medical problems that would cause you problems cocking a crossbow manually or using a rope cocking aid this would eliminate that as it reduces the cocking effort down to just a few pounds. it takes A little more time to cock a crossbow using it but it will save your backshoulders and arms if you do a lot of shooting..
I had the accudraw on my Pro Elite and liked it but opted to switch it out to the AccuDraw 50 as it is faster if you do not think you would have any problems using a rope style cocking aid you migh consider going with the Accudraw 50..
I own both a TenPoint andan Excalibur and both are great crossbows but I do find myself shooting the TenPoint a lot more than the Excalibur in my opinion it is the better crossbow but thats just my opinoin. I fell it is every bit as accurate and it shoots smother and quitier. JMO

I shouldnt have any trouble using a rope cocking system. I live in Tennessee and they allow anyone to use crossbows now and have thought about it all year as an alternative to a compound, but I am also looking at compuond bows as well. I am planning another trip to basspro to look at what they have. I have looked once but had no clue what I was looking for. Thanks for the info

I don't know where in Tn. you live, but there is a sportsmans warehouse in Memphis and in Hornlake. Ten Pt. pro-fusion is cheaper than at Basspro i have been over to both. Rope cocker plenty good if yer not arm disabled.

Take a look at the Accudraw 50, it is a lot more convient than a regular rope cocker as it is permanetly with the crossbow..

Lee: Last I checked was that at: www.bowhunterssuperstore.com
Htoler: The only downside to the Acudraw 50 is it's committed to just one bow, where a rope cocker will fit lot of different bows.

RE: Excalibur Pheonix Vs Horton HD 175

Lee: I've got the Phoenix and the Emax for recurves and a Paradox. Don't know much about the Ecet, other than what I read. I'd say this, if you're gonna shoot it alot, go w/ the Phoenix, that 175 lbs is a breeze w/ a rope cocker. If you are mainly gonna just hunt w/ it, get the Ecet, as you can change the Ecet to a Phoenix via Excel string and heavier than stock arrows. I'm not sure what the physical differences are in weight and length, but am sure others here do know. I'm just partial to the Phoenix, it's a sweet bow and if I think I need more oomph, I've got either the Pdox or the Emax to go to. Hard for me to be real objective in my situation, but if I could only keep one of the three, it would be the Phoenix.

Lee, how tall are you?

RE: Excalibur Pheonix Vs Horton HD 175

Well i had the Phoenix and it was a nice CB fer all around use. I have traded it fer the Exocet 200 and i like my end of the trade very well. I like it so well i don't need to buy another Excal the rest of my life, figure it will last me the next 43 years til i am a 100! It has the speed and flat traj. that i went back to using a rifle scope, its good to 40 yds. just using the xhair! [8D]

Dnk, 6'1" 200lb 70 yr old. I could still cock it the hard way but when you get to my age the joints hollar about it so I would use a cocker of some sort. Lee

RE: Excalibur Pheonix Vs Horton HD 175

At 6'1" the Exocet 200 would work for you for hunting. I do not find the weight a problem but the length of the cocking stroke is. I had to shorten the ropes so that it takes about 3-4" of the stroke up. If you are going to shoot at targets a lot like Dan, Squirrel, myself and a few others you're going to want some target limbs or the Phoenix to start with. I can cock my 175 Exocet and shoot all day with the rope cocker. At your height you'll be able to cock the Exocet without in an emergency. Because of the length of the cocking stroke I cannot cock my Exocet 200 without but I can easily cock the 175 without. Correct me if I am wrong Dan but I think the difference is 1.5". I am 5'3".

RE: Excalibur Pheonix Vs Horton HD 175

An inch here, an inch there, lol, pretty soon you are talkin REAL crossbow, lol, As I understand it the only difference in CURRENT production is in the power stroke/length of rail. Stocks and limbs are all the same except for brown Vixen.I have some info off of a brochure that is not dated, so feel free to correct me, but they are all listed as: Vixen 13.5"
Phoenix 14.5"
Ecet 200 15.5"
Emax 16.5"

What ever new stuff Excal has planned if anything, will come out at the ATA show next month. I know some of the power strokes got tweaked in the past few years and that they invented the forward angled riser, but have no idea when or to which bows, as it doesn't matter to me.

I shoot the excal phoenix and i love it lol..best bow for the $$ in my opinion...another great bow would be the 10point titan but too much money for me to drop lol

RE: Excalibur Pheonix Vs Horton HD 175

I had decided between a Excalibur Pheonix and a 10 Point Pro Fusion. I was looking at them on Basspro website and for theExcalibur Pheonix it says """""Compact, incredibly easy to handle, but with plenty of punch. Great for smaller hunters, or for anyone who prefers lighter gear that doesn't skimp on raw power and accuracy""""""" I am 340 and 6'2" Would this cause an issue with my size. Is this bow for someone smaller. I plan on looking at them again soon but want to know what to expect. Thanks

RE: Excalibur Pheonix Vs Horton HD 175

Well now wee doggies i have had both Phoenix and Exocet 200. I am 194 lb.fat man at 5' 9" and neither CB gives me any problem cocking it with the rope cocker. At a third of lb.weight i can't tell about either on Exocet 200. Great CB and i find ithas a flatter Traj.past 25 yds.[:o][:-]
