new to crossbows need help
Im new to crossbows. i just picked up a HD175 and sighted it in at the shop, went home and was grouping field tips at 30 in the size of a half dollar. I was grinning ear to ear, even pulled the wife out and she could do the same. she has no experience with any wheapon. put on field tips and was disgusted. i was taking up the whole target, no consistency at all, the same arrows were hitting in a different spot every time. tried a different brand broadhead with the same results, and neither brand was cheap. these were the high dollar tips. ive read some of the earlier post here and noticed im using the right grain (100). any help?

RE: new to crossbows need help
Watch it guys.... Riggsb could be a plant sent here to get you kids arguing over which B-Head is best and to take your minds off the task at hand which is killing deer. Slick Tricks, Rockets, even Wasps (Don)are all gonna get votes. Knapped flint works best for me. Actually Brian your gonna get lots of good advice about many B-Heads. The only problem is you gotta be wealthy to try them all. Good luck and I am sure you will be hitting with B-Heads as well as feild points before you know it.

RE: new to crossbows need help
When you get above 300 fps life gets alot harder! I think the bow you speak of shoots at 320 or so. With my old super mag which shot around 260 to 270 I never had a problem with the old muzzys. But when I got the new super max 175, which is an older version of the hd 175 I had the same problems. Was lucky to keep them in a six inch circle. But the field tips flew great. This year I am going to shoot the new Tekan Two's. They are the new cam style design mechs that do not hindge but slide back on a cam design. They are flying just like my field tips to the inch mark! In the morning I am going to try fifty yards with them! You can find a fixed blade but it will be alot of work and money. Life in the fast lane has its disadvantages. Also just to make sure, did you spin test your B-heads to make sure they are on straight? If they are not that can give you a problem.

RE: new to crossbows need help
Check your bolts, string, and cables. If all looks good try with the field points again to see if it really is the broadheads.
even poor flying b-heads should be more consistent than that. Mitch |
RE: new to crossbows need help
riggsb, first you said with field points you were hitting half dollar groups and smiling ear to ear then you go home and put on field points and are shooting all over the place and are disgusted. I'm confused, are you "punch drunk"?:D:D:D

RE: new to crossbows need help

RE: new to crossbows need help
sorry early in, meant broad heads. also on a side note, i use the same broad heads on my and i have to re-adjust my sights from field points but they were consistent.

RE: new to crossbows need help
I checked his profile to learn his name and yes, you were being mocked. I would sure try the old spin test. Geez this is fun. I just assumed he had changed from field tips to Broadheads and I sure am no Rocket scientist

RE: new to crossbows need help
I am John (Always have been) and Brian has been Brian since he first became a member which was yesterday. He has not been around long enough to throw in the barrel. Geez.... I hope we don't run the poor guy off this quick. Where is the love. As that great statesman once said " Can't we all just get along."He post was titled "HELP" and we are driving the bus over him. Where is the love..

RE: new to crossbows need help
Planter, I'm certainly not trying to run riggsb (Brian) off in fact he's welcome to any help that I can be to him but when he first logged in on this site his name was listed as John, for whatever reason, notBrian. I looked it up when you were asked how you knew his name! Strange, that's all.[8D]

RE: new to crossbows need help
riggsb, reguarding your situation, maybe you would do well to just sight in with broadheads and shoot broadheads only. It certainly takes out any guess work. Like I've said, I believe in practicing with what I hunt with, you can't go wrong. Again JMHO.;)

RE: new to crossbows need help
I've had similar problems with broadhead grouping, but not as severe as your's. I would suggest one of two options.
Option 1: Get some high-quality mechanicals that are designed to perform at 300+ fps. With mechs that use O-rings, they often recommend to put 2 rings or rubber bands on for fast setups. Option 2: Get some low-profile broadheads that should work better. Slick Tricks are the best I've found at shooting right with my field tips, but there are some other heads out there that probably work just as well. NAP makes a couple of low-profile heads that are supposed to shoot well out of fast bows (one is called "Triton", I think, I forget what the other one is called). |
RE: new to crossbows need help
What type of bolt are you shooting? If it’s aluminum it’s possible that it is bent a tad. That would account for you bolt hitting all over the place. Depending on which way you sat it in your rail would determine which direction it flew.
With your broadhead in the bolt, put the tip on a table and spin the bolt. If it wiggles at all, it could be a bent bolt or maybe the broadhead is not centered well. Don’t give up, just eliminate issues and you’ll find the source. |
RE: new to crossbows need help
I also picked up a hd package/w scpoe had the same problem shooting field on the target broad heads every where so i figured hunting with broad heads i will sight it in with the razors muzzys 100gr have them touching at 30yds

RE: new to crossbows need help
Hey planter, thanks for the back up im just not good at this internet stuff. i read the forum, i have to say that i am old school and am a little weary of the mechanicals, for instance last year was the first year i went to carbons for my compound. wow what a difference but i did go through a bad batch. still weary of them. i went and got a half dozen G-5's today and they grouped pretty good but i will admit that i also put them on brand new bolts. could this have made a difference? i didnt have any misses that would have distorted the other ones i was using.sorry if i got offensive last night but i have no clue as to the name thing those guys were talking about.
thanks brian |
RE: new to crossbows need help
Hey brian we are not a mean bunch. Its just that sometimes anti hunters or anti crossbowers come in here and lay some bait and then things get outa hand pretty quick. Early thinks, (not saying he is right or wrong) that he seen your name as john the first time he looked. I do not know cause I did not look. All I do know is that right after your first post planter called you brian and his post was pretty close to yours. If early seen your name as john it was a real quick spot. Its just sometimes we get defensive and try and weed out the anti's right from the get go and it looks as some how you fell into this cross hair. I feel its just a misunderstanding but keep posting and prove us wrong, the more members the better!

RE: new to crossbows need help
Eh Riggs i shoot a barnett quad 300 at 343fps and i use mechanicals i had the same problem a couple yrs ago and when i switched to mecs my prob went away and now i shoot 125 gr shock waves give them a try. Doesnt hurt.

RE: new to crossbows need help
Riggs, use a heavier arrow set up, do a nut and bolt check to make sure all fasteners are tight and check those arrows for straightness.
