CB Sighted In!
How many have their CB's sighted in with B'heads at this time. Mine is and deer season opens on 23rd, sept.:D
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
Hey, Smokie
See that is why I shoot expandables, as long as they spin perfectly on the arrow straightner and there is no wobble in thebroadhead, there is no reason to waste my time shooting my broadheads, because they will fly in the same hole as my field points. Of course I weigh every field point and every broadhead(wonder how many people do that) have found that field points varywithin app.2to3grains and Rocket broadheads are within that or less.If out more than that I use broadhead washers(both plastic and metal) of various sizes(thickness) to make up or loose weight, but the last year or so I have not had to use any...And for you guys and gals who don't use "good" expandables keep shooting those fixedbroadheads and cussing when they don't go into the same hole as your field points... |

Mine sighted in. My season starts Oct.14. Come on and get here~!!

RE: CB Sighted In!
Shooting Rocket 100gr. Steelheads mixed in with field points and find they are right on the money although I am double banding them.Sure wish I had more bands... I always shot expanding heads off the compound cause the fixed blade seemed to fly like a Katusha rocket. Have not tried fixed off the Xbow but if they fly as well would sure give them a try. Like most thing the less moving parts on it the better off you are. I never shot a deer with the rockets who liked them in the least. >>>>>Whack

RE: CB Sighted In!
I have to tell y'all it weren't easy getting my Bow sighted in. Took a couple of hours, i gotstid 23 2219's and 2 practice B'Heads. I tried them on all 23 and wrote down where they be hitting on 3-D deer. Only 3 hit in 1 1/2" of 1" red dot painted on deer. I hand spun every arrow an those 3 were sweet. Of course they be the only 3 that be same weight and same size feathers, flat noks and inserts and wraps. All the rest be different weight and vanes an such. Its all a part of seeing what works fer ya an yer Bow![:o][:-]:D

RE: CB Sighted In!
Mine is ready to go with the new Tekan two's on them. Them babys fly just like the field points. Fully open up as they go into the target, the slits in the foam provide the evidence, and the paper two inches in front of it says they are not opening up while being shot. No double rubbers for me! And that massive cut on contact tip is sure to crush them bones!!!

RE: CB Sighted In!
Jay, what expandables do you use? I've used wasps for years and not a single problem yet. I use them once (because I don't like the way the blades are anchored and the ferrule is a bit too slender for my liking). I practice with them tied up with dental floss (just a couple of shots) even thought I know I don't have to because I've never seen a change of POI.

RE: CB Sighted In!
Dnk, Dnk, Dnk: Jay, what expandables do you use? ROCKETS YOU FOOL!!! lol lol lol. Sorry, just couldn't help myself!
My vote goes w/ Green Pea, Slick Tricks 100 gr 1 1/8" diam. While I do respect you other guys choices of b-heads just like I do your bows, these are the ones for me. One arrow, one b-head, 3 xbows. Makes life alot simpler and cheaper. There is a deal on I think AT, up by "boards" where someone has done some extensive testing. Check out the ST performance on a hog scapula. He literally pulverized it w/ repeated shots w/ ST's. Not trying to change your minds, but explaining my choice. I think if I do mess up and hit a shoulder, these might just still get the job done. Part of the guys tests showed no damage to the ST's after going thru that bone. Good hunting to all!! |
RE: CB Sighted In!
Let me see, did we not just read the post by Smoke, taking hours to sight in broadheads, my time to sight in broadheads, zero minutes...Anybody that has read anything about broadheads would know the Rocket Steelhead has out-penetrated every broadhead that it was put up against. And I do mean every style, in dead steer hinds,in plywood, and ballistic gel....And as far as penetration, my 75g Rocket Wolverines, with about 100ftlbs of KE will shoot thru both shoulders, usually resulting in a "very short" blood trail...Planter, you can use the bands from braces,or contact Rocket on the web, bet they will send you extra bands, a package of bands are also available from Pro shops.Dnk, got a little leary about the Wasp Jak-Hammer even though I used them for years and killed every animal I shot with them, their blade attachment system was never the best, and their bands I did not like, always used Rocket bands...
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
Jay: You've no doubt got more experience w/ this stuff than most of us combined and I do respect that. Had I "met" you before my beloved ST's it might be a different story, but I'm pretty well committed now, lol. I, fdor one, wasn't aware of those performances on your last post, good info, thanks!!

RE: CB Sighted In!
Well i have 6-7 paks of these old Bear Bruin Lites to use up before i can buy any new ones. Thats my Mrs. saying, use up yer inventory of those you bought back in 87. When you get a deer fer each B'Head you have, then i can get new ones. Looks like 3 brands are in the running. Rockets, Slick tricks and Montec G5 Tekans. Sure don't want to buy a bunch of each to see what my CB likes but thats life!:D

RE: CB Sighted In!
Dan,
I have never been against fixed blade, used Thunderheads for years. and I might say with good results..I can get a fixed blade broadhead to fly with a compound at speeds exceding 325fps, but it is usually time consuming with the tuning issues, and sometimes all the customer has to do is torque the grip and a problem arises....I was leary about the expandables when they first came out, they would send them to me and they would sit on the workbench forever...But as the bows got faster and tuning issues became more critical I tried them out...I found that some worked and some did not, so I stuck with the ones that I had the most confidence in..Because of this the fixed had to get better or loose their share of the market, because the expandables were taking over..This has lead to better designed fixed blade broadheads, and that is a good thing..But alot of customerscould be "broadhead poor", so I recommend a good expandable...And xbows have always been critical of fixed blade broadheads..And I have seen some of the most massive holes put in animals with the expandables that a fixed broadhead would never do.Wish I knew how to post a pic with all this fancy equipment I have, I could show you one you would never believe... |
RE: CB Sighted In!
I've been sighted in for a month, i'll go back out and re-tighten all the nuts and bolts and check the sights one more time before i head afeild. You guys should stop fighting about who has the most penetration, who has the most ke, all that stuff. It doesnt matter if you have a broadhead on the tip of a 50 bmg round, or on the end of a stick. If you hit it correctly you wont have to worry about what kind of bhead you have. You should be confident enough in your shot that you can compinsate for the shot given to you at the present time.
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
Funny I did not think we were arguing, I thought this was a debate and info forum...When you get beyond 24 years experience in the Archery business, and have over 200 big game kills, with over 120 archery kills let me know, then maybe we can argue about something you know about...

Squkilla: this part of your post was right on the money: "If you hit it correctly you wont have to worry about what kind of bhead you have. You should be confident enough in your shot that you can compinsate for the shot given to you at the present time."
Did you ever see the Charley Brown cartoon where he and Linus asked the carpenter how they knew how high to build the house? The carpenter told them 1st thing ya do is count your nails! Linus then told Charley, "It's best to leave them old carpenters alone" lol Jay: Give "the kid" a break, he's gotta wrassle his 79 yr old grandmother for a 200+ buck!! That's the truth!! |
RE: CB Sighted In!
Ain't saw no argument here in months, we be having conversations![&o][:-]:D
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
I don’t want to start an argument … but…
Jaygail you come off a little too head strong for my taste. Sharing your opinion is what this forum is all about. Sharing your experience is what this forum is about. Sharing what has worked for you and what hasn’t is what this forum is about. How can anyone pat you on the back when your arms are in the way? I’ve read three of your post in the last two days and you talk like you’re the all mighty know it all and we should drool over your teachings. Personally I’m not impressed. You mentioned tuning your bow to shoot field points is a waste of time. Guess what, we agree on something. I have never had to re-adjust my cross bow when shooting broadheads to match my field points. I shoot 100 grain field points which is what my bow is tuned for. I put a 100 grain slick trick in and bingo… I’m in the same hole. As for the 12 year old that calls himself Squirrel: I would bet my house that he could match you step by step any day of the week. Remember, being humble will get you farther then being obnoxious. |
RE: CB Sighted In!
I value as many opinions as I can get and it does not matter what sharp broadhead you hit them with as long as you hit them right. Like Jay I use the Steelheads. I just wish I knew where he got extra bands for them. I don't think Jay knows it all, but he sure does know alot. Squirrel seems like a bright kid and I am willing to bet there is a ton he could learn from Jay. Just think, Jay has underwear as old as the Squirell is but "probably" not as badly stained. Some guys want to reload ammo to acheive 1" accuracy at 100 yards. I am happy shooting offhand rifle groups of five inches at 100 with factory ammo and have never even shot a deer that far away. Some guys want 350fps out of their bow, but like Smoke I think if I throw a log with a sharp broadhead thru their lungs I win the Game. This is not fighting or arguing, it is just a bit of trying to convince the other guy he is wrong and I for one am just having fun..>>>>>Whack!

No, afraid you take the cake in being obnoxious..When did I say that tuning to field points was a waste of time??? Do you mean broadheads??? I can see how limited your knowledge is, they are different types of tips..Hope you remember which to screw on when the season starts, remember lefty loosey, righty tighty...I can also see that your reading ability is severly limited, because you did not read everything I wrote.Did I not say that I have used both fixed and expandables and had good results with both. Did I not say that you shouldhave confidence in the equipment and practice with the equipment that you use, and make up your own mind about that equipment.I don't know or care what you do for a living, but I think that if I were to walk into your business(garbage man or whatever you do) and start telling you that you are doing everything wrong and I am here to straighten you out, I think the shoe will be on the other foot...If you don't know what I mean, I can try to type slower and use words you might understand...Your turn sonny... |
RE: CB Sighted In!
wow, now i know why I didnt miss this guy. and green pea
As for the 12 year old that calls himself Squirrel That's 13:D |
RE: CB Sighted In!
Gee wiz 13, thats a long life fer a squirrel! I knowed you be covered up in dem fleas and a wolve or 2. Bet yer be abit rank when ya get soaked from the rain! :D

RE: CB Sighted In!
WASP mechanicals!!! What are you some sort of loser Don? The more I read over this "stuff" I realize that many including myself placefor to much emphasis on the equipment we use rather than hunting techniques. Scent control, stand placement and approach and the rest of the things that cause me not to score. The least of my problems is what I am shooting that day whether it be gun or bow. I am looking forward to the day when I can pass on a 3 yr old eight point as being to young and needing a year or two to mature.I prefer to rough score them when they are laying at my feet. This is also going to be the first year that I hunt with my Pheonix. Arguably the best bow out there unless you dry fire them.

RE: CB Sighted In!
If I was Squkilla's age, I'd take Jay some of Smokes Capt. Morgan and see if I could get him pixilated enough to adopt me!

RE: CB Sighted In!
Hey jaygirl, I think I found your hot button. Gee that was hard to do.
Your right, I did say field points by mistake, you win another bowl of chili. I guess I thought you could read between the lines and respond with an adult response. I won’t pick on you and make you look like a fool. You have that covered. Go back and read through the last few post you’ve left. If you don’t think you come across like an obnoxious turd which wouldn’t surprise me your only fooling yourself. Tuck your chest back into your diaper and brag about how wonderful you are somewhere else. I’m still not impressed. |
RE: CB Sighted In!
Planter, Wasp mechanicals are OLD and not a much talked about new piece of marketing hardware. The main reason for my use of them is the large hole. My success if not based on my mechanical broadheads (I also use thunder heads, yet another old one and the old wasp cam locks) Pay attention here... its all old stuff from the carved limb tips to the cam locks with a tich of slightly more modern equipment...wasp mechanicals and thunderheads. Planter please guide me to path more to your liking which is apparently the only way. My point being that you are wrong to say what you are saying about me and that no one has the right to dictate who uses what. Planter MOST of the time you have intellegent things to say like in the later half of your last post but I am sorry you blew in in you're first two sentences.
Dan, get rid of your scope and camera. Mike get rid of your flemish strings. Everyone get away from your computers. Planter get rid of your compound and use a stick. All you guys get rid of your wheels. Reb, you can only use a knife. I could go on but I hope you see my point Planter. You called it. I answered it. Sorry! Looser? Don't think so. I'm rarely slandered and I always return fire. |
RE: CB Sighted In!
Listen guys, most of this is light-hearted fun, it just is a passion that most of us share..I would be willing to bet you that Don is a much better mechanic than I am, I would also bet you that Dan is a much better carpenter than I am..John, sorry I do not know what you do for a living, but Ibet you are better at it than I would be.I don't even know how to use this computor half the time. Most of us that are a little older remember our first kill, most of them were completely by accident, at least for me it was..I would sit in the stand and look at my equipment(this string and sticks)and wonder how the he!! was I going to be able to take down an animal as large as a deer..It took me three seasons of half-hearted attempts to do so..But what is even worse is to sit there for endless hours and have some type of equipment malfunction, when the "moment " arrived, that would have a tendency to ruin your day. What I am attempting to say is to use the best equipment you can afford, a razor sharp broadhead, and be able to hit a softball at the longest range that you are comfortable with..I am lucky enough to live in a state where there is alot of nice whitetails.Maryland had the no1 typical for either 04 or 05 can't remember which. As far as I am concerned this state allows way to many to be killed..One county away we are allowed 120deer kills per hunter(little much don't you think)That was the limit in my county last year..This year we are only allowed a paltry 12 deer per hunter. To me this sounds like a deer eradication program rather than a conservation program..Thanks to all for your support...

RE: CB Sighted In!
Well this is a lively party isn't it?
Jay, I remember the first bow kill. I still feel the rush. It felt like it was him or me! Yup felt like an accident too. I was pumped, breathing heavy, eyes bugged out, body tense, gawwwd it was funny in hindsite! Best part was that I could calm down in a matter of seconds. BTW Jay, you are right, I am a good mechanic. |
RE: CB Sighted In!
Shucks, I'm confused, who'se turn is it in the barrel? Where's Htoler? He's overdue for a tune-up, lol. I'm trying to forget every thing I knew about carpentry, threw a hammer out the truck window every 100 miles when I moved here, retired.
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
Dan, keep throwing the extra stuff away! One thing for sure I'm throwing too when I retire.
I don't think anyone's in the barrel this time. Planter just made a statement because its a free country (unless your mexican, LOL). I'm not peeved and I hope Planter isn't either. I know Jay isn't, he's just in a good mood! Hehehehe. Roger, don't let Jay get you going or it will feed his fantasy! Squirrel, take a bath! LOL, just kidding, I got heaps of respect for you and many here do as well. But you ask for a beating now and then and I suspect you like it! I think you're just a youger version of Jay! LOL, ok time to end the gene pool! Hehehehehe. |
RE: CB Sighted In!
We will have to extend the sand box area, as its getting too crowded. We are not playing nicely, deer season needs to open real soon. I went and hung my climbing stand, met up with very nice 8 pt. still in velvet. He took several leaps and bounds, then he just walked down thru the woods . He had forgotten me that quick! I just watched him ease down to the creek and lost sight of him.:D
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
Smoke, our early season for geese is next week. I am supposed to go with my hunting partner in kayaks chasing geese in a river. This year I want to shoot some geese with a crossbow and compound (on the ground, not flying) with some big fat wasp mechanicals, one of the best for turkeys so I'm sure it will work well on geese. Its not deer but its better than nothing.
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
Don.. I do apologize. Not for even one second did I think you would take me seriously. I was just pointing out however weakly that it does not matter what broadhead you shoot. I was kidding and am sorry that I offended you. I was in the process of packing up some strings to be reserved but I am guessing that deal is off. Geez it it so easy to be misunderstood when you type something and you have been nothing but helpful. It looks like I am in the barrel and I don't wanna be. Straight arrows to yuh Bud.
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
OK this is some kind kettle of fish we have here. Y'all hear me well i do not intend to take any turn in any barrel! Now a seat in my fishing boat will do. B'Heads [:o]I will buy some of these that has been said to do great killing powers.[:-]Now any one want to donate to that cause:DHehehe [8D]i am tired been hanging tree stand and weedeating yards. Its time fer them Mtns. refreshing cold one.[&:]
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
DNK thats awsome getting to hunt geese with Bows. You let me knowed how it all turns out. Make it a story so i feel like i am there watching you. Good luck.:D
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
I'm not a bad mechanic myself, i have already rebuilt the engine in a john deere G and restored dozens of engines you probbably dont know diddly squat about;)
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
Started shooting my CB today, first and only four shots in a 3" circle at 20yrds.One vane got clipped but that's the price you pay for accuracy. These Spitfires fly true, I luv um!:D Oh yea, only about three an a half weeks to go.;)
|
RE: CB Sighted In!
early in : sounds like you're all set! Hope you thump a nice one, i'm waiting for 10/01 myself. Git-er-done!!
