Default Y-Bone removal on Northern Pike cleaning made easy

A friend of mine does a great job getting the Y-bones out.

I was taught a much easier what than that by an old fellow that grew up in MN.

Put the fish on its belly and cut down behind the head until you get to the spine, then run the knife along the spine until you hit the dorsal fin and then turn the knife up and cut out the entire back piece. There is a ridge of bone down the middle of this piece so you fillet along the bone on both sides and end up with 2 long tubes of meat.

After that you can see the ends of the y-bones so you just fillet along those bones and down the ribs to the belly. Fillet that piece down to where the dorsal fin ends and cut that piece off. Then continue to fillet down to the tail. Repeat on the other side. Remove the skin off all the pieces in the normal way. If you do it right you get 5 completely boneless fillets out of a pike.
