Default Deer Butchering Video?

Does anyone know of a good video on butchering a deer?
I can quarter them up and get all the goddies out, but what I'm looking for is how to get the individual cuts (chops... steaks... etc...) all cut up.

THanks
Alex

This is a pretty good one. Audio and video quality are lacking, but the instruction is good. I don't like how he saws the body in half though...kinda pointless to me.

Thumbs up

People who have watched me do any part of processing a deer, always comment that they realize I've "done a deer or two". I've gotten real good at it. Despite the eons of family tradition on how it was done in the past, I learned beyond that and picked up several good things along the way that make it better, faster and more efficient. I've also studied under a gentleman who is the best I know when it comes to processing a deer. I'm glad to have learned some from him. I've also picked up good pointers from a video or two. I have watched many deer processing videos and many of them suck... and suck bad!

I remember one guy was removing the cape from the body and LITERALLY HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of hairs were falling with each cut! While the deer was hanging, this guy was cutting from the outside in... cutting directly through hair with each cut. It looked crazy seeing all that hair flying to the floor!

Anyway, the best I've seen from watching many videos is by a guy named Larry Metz. He has 2 videos of a set, but sounds like you need video #2 called Boning The Deer Carcass. When I saw that video, I quickly understood, because that's what I learned from my buddy who had a big hand in teaching me how to do it.

Get that video and I promise, you'll learn something and will enjoy processing your own cuts!

Good luck,

If you have a buddy who can film you, why not make a video yourself and post it to YouTube or whatever? The fact that you're applying what you've learned from experience and from other experienced hunters/butchers would be really valuable to others.

7.62NATO,

I do have similar plans in my other areas of expertise. Also, I don't think I could add or do better than what Metz already put out there. I could add what I do additionally, but I do have plans in other areas for videos, etc.

One thing to help others, is that I hang the deer from the head, not the hind legs. It's easier to work with this way; for me anyway.

I also pull the hide off with a winch or use a truck. There are videos on YouTube that show this. When the carcass is void of meat, I cut the skeleton up with a Sawzall and bag it up... as there's a ridiculous law here that says we can't dispose of a DEER carcass in the woods!

Thanks,

Default What an excellent Christmas gift

for Country Club hunters.

Too bad I spent part of my youth watching chickens and cattle get butchered.

I hear ya.

Thanks for the tip on hanging from the neck. I thought about doing it next time because it's difficult for me to detach the rear legs with them locked up in the deer hang.
