Smoker help.
I am looking at trying out a propane smoker. I do not want to spend a ton and I do not want electric or charcoal. I would like to be in the $100 to $200 range. I have seen some at Bass, Gander, and a couple other sporting stores. Thing is I know nothing about the brands or what is needed to make up a solid working unit that will work good and hold up. I know there are bells and whistles and stainless and stuff I do not need or do not want to invest in at like $600. Have any of you had any experience or recomendations to pass along. Thanks in advance.

RE: Smoker help.
I don't know alot about smokers but my dad bought a couple a few years ago for christmas presents for a few of the boys so he must of got them for pretty cheap. They have been holding up well, he has used them for thanksgiving and christmas dinners among other things. I would try Menards or maybe Fleetfarm if you have one in the area. And ask alot of questions at Sportsman's wharehouse. Most have their employees use the products and they will give it to you straight up.

RE: Smoker help.
You say you dont want to buy a charcoal smoker. Well the charcoal smokers arent limited to just charcoal. You can buy hickory chunks and mesquite chunks and use them in the so called charcoal smokers. You can buy the chunks of wood at wal mart pretty cheap and just use them. Charcoal doesnt have to be used. I love cooking with my smoker with just the wood chunks. I love the mesquite the best. Great flavor... Your decision though...

RE: Smoker help.
Arrowmaster it might be some of this salmon.
Fletch NY Great outdoors smokey mt smoker IMO is worth a good look. The priceing is reasonable and very user friendly. It comes with four racks, water pan, and a cast iron chip box. |
RE: Smoker help.
I have the same smoker as that which is in the photo, for a smoker it is alright,I have had several kinds and types through the years and if I where to do it all over again I would simply use the weber grill like I have forr smoking. For summer sausages and smoked meats where yyou hve to control the temps I wouldn't recomend the propane smoker at all.The electric insulated box smoker are best.

That looks awful tasty Blacklab...

RE: Smoker help.
Thank you for the input!!
That salmon looks fantastic!! I can almost smell it and we are a long ways apart!! Blacklab and Bigguy, that is what I was wondering if those ones I saw at Gander like yours were any good. I was not really looking to spend $600+ for something I may use 4 times a year. If I turn out to be a junky then I will be more experienced to upgrade as fits me. |
RE: Smoker help.
I have a Brinkman electric smoker. I believe I paid in the neighborhood of $50 for it. I have used it plenty over the last few years.
I'm not sure if Brinkman sells a propane model. If you like smoked stuff, you'll be using it a lot. The stuff gets ate up quickly by friends and family.:D |
RE: Smoker help.
Brinkman is one of the best in the businessfor smoking meat.I had one of their early model charcoal smokers years ago and loved it.I made everything from 25lb smoked turkeys, salmon, smoked ribs and all kinds of jerky. They are really well made, any charcoal grill can easily smoke meats and do a great job, simply put coals around the outside of a pan filled with water, juice or beer, put soaked wood chips on the white coals then your meat on the rack rack, one key though is leave the flues just a crack open.No need to spend a bunch.

RE: Smoker help.
Oh, this is blasphamous. Using Propane to smoke???? Charcoal and lump all the way. :D:D
Just kidding. I use a weber bullet and kinda wish I could get a propane. I love the idea and taste of lump, but its difficult to control over 16 hour brisket smoke. |
RE: Smoker help.
Fletch when you get your smoker, Ibet you'll be smokeing more than you thought you ever would ;)
B C The smoker above dosen't have a thermastat but it is really simple to control the temps and the long smokes are cake walks. Can't say enough about that smoker. |
RE: Smoker help.
Same as in picture. Propane all the way, can control heat better. I can do salmpn it a bit over 1 hr. Deer shoulders in two as well as port spare ribs. (The latter two I cover with BBQ sauce, in foil, then cook over low heat in smoker - without adding wood - for 2 hrs more. Super.

ORIGINAL: bigcountry Oh, this is blasphamous. Using Propane to smoke???? Charcoal and lump all the way. :D:D Just kidding. I use a weber bullet and kinda wish I could get a propane. I love the idea and taste of lump, but its difficult to control over 16 hour brisket smoke. Masterbuilt 7 in 1 smoker I have their 25# mini version and it works great, for lump flavor just add a foil packet filled with lump to the base occasionally, chips or pellets work well too. |
RE: Smoker help.
That's great Fletch ;)
BTW In order for ribs to be awesome they have to be tasted by me. So send me a couple racks and I'll decide :D |
