I watched it last night. The guy shot a buck with his bow. He had an arrow in his hand. He ran up on it, poked it with an arrow and flung himself down on his knees beside the deer. When he poked it, he didnt even stop walking.

You can usually tell with a bow...I've never had an issue on the 30+ deer I've killed with a bow.

But, once in a while when one drops on the spot with a gun, I'll poke him in the eye to make sure. That's the only sure-fire tell I've found.

If it's eyes are open and fogged over, it is dead. That's the only for sure way that I know of to tell.

PS - I don't really do that. I just walk up to it from the back and usually touch it's eye with the tip of my arrow, just to be sure. Being gorged by the antlers of a half-dead buck isn't my ideal way to depart from this world. Better safe than sorry.
Exactly what he said.

Usually when I see my deer on the ground I run up to it and throw down a People's elbow on it and then a figure-four leg lock just to make sure he doesn't get away. Then once I make sure it's dead, I let go of my kung-fu death grip and congratulate myself on a job well-done. Then it's party time.
Thanks I needed that! You had a couple of my coworkers and myself busting a gut just visualizing that! I might try it this year with a huntin bud of mine just to see the look on his face.

I usually walk up and from a little distance watch for a second and if the chest isn't moving from breathing I feel safe. Justin sometimes I've been force to apply the sleeper hold but I could never all four legs locked in for the figure four.[8D]
