Camp got broken into

Well, we have had the camp for 5 years now with no problems as far as break ins except for one bear. Sometime between Dec. and today someone, not a bear, broke in and made a mess according to our neighboring camp. The guy who discovered it is a cop so we know it is legit!!! We will be heading up this afternoon to see what is missing and how bad the damage is!! I know we have chain saws, generator, and a bunch of other stuff that we left there. I hope nothing of importance is missing and it was just a bunch of kids out for a good time looking for booze or something. Just pisses me off that they have to go out in the middle of nowhere and destroy something you work hard for!!! Some day it is going to turn around and be them it happens to. We live in a small community so if someone around here did it we will eventually find out. People just don't keep there mouths shut which in our case would be good. Sounds like they broke in the neighbors and possibly the other neighboring camp. I don't think they knew they were messing with law enforcement property, they better hope they don't get caught!!!

Sorry to hear about your camp. There are few things I dislike more than thieves!

That is the very reason we leave absolutely nothing of value in our camp. all they would get are some old pots and dishes and maybe the propane fixtures like stove and lamps. Thats the world we live in now. Some of the remote camps don't even lock the door in case someone has an emergency and needs shelter. Unfortunately mine is close to the road.

That sucks to hear what happened. Hopefully whoever did it will get caught. How much damage was estimated?

I set mine up with an alarm system that calls my cell, my house and 911. I also insured it. It is a shame we have to go to those extremes to keep punks away from our things. Hope you catch them!

RE: Camp got broken into

Well I just got back from camp and found they kicked in the back door and busted out a window. Why they decided to come in both spots beats me. Luckily nothing was stolen as far as we can tell. Looks as though they were looking for money, medicine (pills), or booze. All they found was a bottle of Ibuprofin that they had dumped into a tray and left there. The camp was a mess but not as bad as I expected. They had every drawer, door, tote, box etc. opened and gone through. My thoughts are it was kids!!!

Our camp isn't locked up tight. Yes we have deadbolts and door locks but that is to keep the honest guy out. If someone wants in, and they did, they could go through a window or bust in the door with no problem. There would be no reason right now to go to extreems to try and keep people out because they could get in anyway. Hopefully we can catch who did it and teach them a lesson!!! We are just thankful that nothing was missing and that they didn't destroy the place. We had the mess cleaned up fairly quickly and got the door and window fixed up for the time being.

It is a shame that we would have to go to extreem measures to keep people out of our property, but as was said before, that is what has become of the world we live in. I hope that it never happens to any of you, EVER!!!

Thanks for listening (reading)

Chris

People don't have any respect for other peoples property... Sometimes it's kids and sometimes it's not. Sorry , hope you come out without to much damage

You may want to put out some false security company yard signs and window stickers. That may at least make them think twice about breaking into your camp house again. They may just move on to another sure thing. Good luck with it.

Your lucky that all they did. I've been talking to locals for years about buying a place of my own in southern ohio. The locals keep telling me to not build anything on the land I want to purchase. They insist that if I were to build anything the area's homeless will either squat in it, or burn it down.

What you need are those really big as$ grizzly bear leg hold traps just below every window. Might stink a bit and have to clean a bit of a mess when you get there but would likely rid you of the vermin

People do things they later regret. I know 2 people that righted the wrong they did at an earlier time in their lives. Maybe it will happen for you. Give people the opportunity to repent and they just might. You said it could have been much worse. That shows some conscience.

One guy here caught some person stealing his game cam with another cam place secretly. It's an idea.

Glad to hear it wasn't too bad. Sorry to say but, it is most likely local kids looking for something to do. It's way to common. I have a buddy that has had his place broke into several times, can't stop them if they really want in. Just don't leave anything of value.[>:]

uphunter15,

Sorry to hear about the camp. My good friend's camp was also broken into, and it's become a regular thing. They stole our generator and toolbox.

His camp is in a really remote location, but now that everybody has ATV's and the police fail to regulate them properly, they are running around everywhere. They trashed his camp and they do it pretty often.

So, he was forced to board over the windows with plywood and has made a removable piece in the floorboards with a 5'x6', 4' deep box beneath. All the goodies are stowed away in there, and the heathen kids haven't been smart enough to find anything yet.

Fire insurance will cover it if they opt to burn the place down, I guess.

Shame that people let their kids act like that.

Sorry to hear about your beak-in.

My father-in-law has property down in southern Illinois and that's exactly the reason why he dosen't build something on it. At one time years ago there was a house on the property and there is still the water and electricity hookups, but he won't budge. He would rather stay in a hotel a 1/2 hr away. It's a shame it's come to this.

I hope it dosen't happen again and I hope they catch the ones who broke in.

RE: Camp got broken into

I've got 80 in Northwest Illinois and I'd love to build something on it but I just don't trust some of the neighbors. The first time I went out to hunt on it during turkey season I met a trespaser who was poaching on the property. He gave me excuse after excuse and it came down to his being beer buddies with the former owners and current neighbors. They gave him permission to hunt it about 15 years ago and nothing I can say will convince him that he can't continue to hunt it like he used to. I tossed him off of the property twice more during deer season and I've found my property messed with. He tried stealing a tree stand but couldn't saw through the chain (but he sure tried), I found big tire rusts through my food plot that match the tire tracks on his truck, and I found 2 gut piles that neither me nor anyone else I gave permission to hunt did.
If I built anything on this property this guy would destroy it. If I was to leave a camper on the property this guy would steal it. It's a huge shame that it only takes one jerk to really ruin what you've worked so hard for. Lately I've been thinking of selling the place and buying again but I really like the property. It's got great deer and turkey.

RE: Camp got broken into

Thanks for the replies!!! You know what the sad thing is, if it was a few kids that did it, someday they are going to own or be a part of something and it will happen to them. What comes around goes around, Right!!! We aren't going to search hard for who did it but just spread the word around and eventually it will get back to us. We live in a small town and unless it was someone from out of the area, word usually gets out. It is nice to have good neighboring camps that check on yours from time to time as we do for them and it is equally nice to have some of our local city and county law enforcement officers with camps right in the area, helps keep most people honest who know they are there. I do believe it was kids looking for a good time but we don't leave anything like booze or money in the camp. The only thing that I was surprised that wasn't missing, that is if it were kids, were the swisher sweet cigars. They took them out but left them on the counter. Maybe those anti-smoking adds got to them:D

I have two diffrent camp broken into on more then one occasion so I feel your pain. Mostly they were just destroying stuff but before we knew better we had a couple of colman lanterns and a canoe stolen.

It sucks you can't trust people but that's just a fact of life. lock it up and take anything of vaule with you. I hope you catch the sob that did it. Maybe if we flogged people like they do in Singapor then we wouldn't have issues like this to deal with.
