I B A meat hunter first, rack second. I do my part in harvesting the legal number of does to help with the management portion of it. I think hunting only for big racks kinda degrades the sport. Why even kill it if you don't want to eat it? That is the main reason I really have no personal desire to hunt bear or whatever else that I don't intend to eat. This could open up another ethical discussion so I'll leave it at that.

I agree with most everybody else. I take grown deer with the bow, and will hold out with the gun until a nice buck walks out. Later in the season, if I still need meat I will pick a day and go to another one of my honey holes to harvest them, dont want to spook that big 'en in the woods I think he's at.

By the way, our bow season opens tomorrow morning. You would know, it hasnt rained in months here (atleast no measureable amount) and it's raining now and is planned from now thru Monday. Go figure...<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hope ya'll have a good sesason...

Both for me.

The first week or so it's meat.
Then I hunt horns for the rest of the season untill the last two weeks and the &quot; If it's a doe it's down&quot; takes over. I passed on 4 small bucks last year as I will do this fall also.
I firmly beleve we MUST let the small ones walk and eat at Burger King if we have to. A fat doe late in the season...Well that is a different story!

I would say both although I am more meat than rack. Like others have stated, you can't hunt on an empty stomach. I would love to bag a really big trophy buck someday but since here in Texas 97% of hunting land is leased by landowners to hunters, you have make your hunting cost-effective. It is expensive meat, when compared to steer and chicken, but it is good meat and getting it is so much fun!!
