Waiting to fill your freezer is something I cant do. I try to shoot a doe at the first opportunity. Then feel my freezer with delicious venison. Then immediately comes the jerky. Now its time to relax and hunt for my racked buck.
I hunt for meat first, feel my cravings and tastebuds Then relax and hunt for the racks |

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
One cannot truly be a trophy hunter without also being a "m-e-a-t" hunter; for to produce the best possible trophies, doe's must be shot to keep the herd numbers in balance. I hunt according to quality deer management principles which involves being both. Anyway, in my state I am unable to "fill my freezer" with a small buck and then hold out for a wallhanger later...only one buck per year per hunter in Kansas.

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
Meat for doe hunting (NJ is earn-a-buck)
Rack for bucks |
RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
Meat first, big rack second. Unless, rack walks by first, then rack also becomes meat.

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
Neither. I just love to hunt and take whatever good shots I can. If I bring home a doe or small buck that's great. If I bring home something more hefty, that's even better. Venison is OK, but tastes a grade below beef, IMO. Antlers look nice, but I don't really have any more wall space to hang them. The overall experience is what I'm really after...much more so than meat or antlers. The thrill of the pursuit, the anticipation, pitting my wits and skills against wild creatures, the sense of invigoration, of rejuvination, the feeling of success as I watch an arrow arc through the shoulders of a handsome deer...these are the things that bring me to the woods.

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
Both for me! I don't waste meat, but I'd shoot an 8 pt. over a spike!

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
Oh, you guys are killin' me with some of these posts.
I guess I am both as well. I will probably shoot the first legal deer to walk by my stand the first day but then take the time to pursue a legally racked buck in the afternoon and for the rest of the season. O U 8 A DOE 2? |

YES!!! If I see a big doe, and a spike (similar size) I'll smack the doe. If I see a big buck, and a similar size buck with a bigger rack....I'll take the one with the big rack. |

There is a MONSTER 6 point I have my eyes on from last year. Do not laugh, this 6 point has beams thicker than your wrist and about a 24 inch spread on the inside of his beam, no brow tines at all or he would be one book buck. RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
I am more of a rack hunter. However, I do not pass up the opportunity for some meat for the freezer.
|
RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
I never shot a doe and I probably never will.
Its all about outsmarting old mossy horns for me. I get my meat from McDonalds. |
RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
I B BOTH. I will shoot as many does as I can get tags for, and the past few years, I've started holding out for a nicer buck.
Some things are true whether you believe them or not. |
RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
I B A meat hunter first, rack second. I do my part in harvesting the legal number of does to help with the management portion of it. I think hunting only for big racks kinda degrades the sport. Why even kill it if you don't want to eat it? That is the main reason I really have no personal desire to hunt bear or whatever else that I don't intend to eat. This could open up another ethical discussion so I'll leave it at that.

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
I agree with most everybody else. I take grown deer with the bow, and will hold out with the gun until a nice buck walks out. Later in the season, if I still need meat I will pick a day and go to another one of my honey holes to harvest them, dont want to spook that big 'en in the woods I think he's at.
By the way, our bow season opens tomorrow morning. You would know, it hasnt rained in months here (atleast no measureable amount) and it's raining now and is planned from now thru Monday. Go figure... Hope ya'll have a good sesason... GB Smack 'em where it hurts! |

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
Both for me.
The first week or so it's meat. Then I hunt horns for the rest of the season untill the last two weeks and the "If it's a doe it's down" takes over. I passed on 4 small bucks last year as I will do this fall also. I firmly beleve we MUST let the small ones walk and eat at Burger King if we have to. A fat doe late in the season...Well that is a different story! |
RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
i B a M E A T hunter for sure, i will shot a doe in a blink of an eye over a small buck
|
RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
when i go hunting, she's got to have a little meat on her. But she's got to have a nice rack too!
jeff greene |
RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
just joking about the previous post. truth is bow season starts here in georgia in the morning. i'll let everything walk that is not a wallhanger this year. i've still got plenty of meat in the freezer from last year.

RE: R U A MEET HUNTER A OR A RACK HUNTER
I would say both although I am more meat than rack. Like others have stated, you can't hunt on an empty stomach. I would love to bag a really big trophy buck someday but since here in Texas 97% of hunting land is leased by landowners to hunters, you have make your hunting cost-effective. It is expensive meat, when compared to steer and chicken, but it is good meat and getting it is so much fun!!
