RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
My angle ? The argument AGAINST crossbows is ridiculous, based on nothing factual and is full of holes. How can anyone beleive in something thats highly flawed as a belief is beyond me.
A crossbow is NOT archery. Main Entry: ar·chery Pronunciation: 'är-ch&-rE Function: noun 1 : the art, practice, or skill of shooting with bow and arrow And we already know what a bow is, don't we ? So, that was an easy quote to dismantle. I know you personally don't believe a crossbow to be a bow. You can believe a cat is a dog too - but that doesn't mean its true, does it ? Longbow,Recurve,Compound (if all are hand draw, hand held) = Archery Crossbows= NOT Archery. How much more simple can we get? Archery is not point, remove safety, and shoot. How simple can it get ? Do you want to count the ways ? BTW - some triggers do have safetys to elimnate misfires - compound - don't they ? But back to the orig question - not one single negative can crossbows be labeled with. Isn't that ironic ? And notice most people living in crossbow states, yet shooting compound/recurve say that hey, crossbows are not a big problem anyway. Isn't that something ? First hand knowledge/expeience of living in a state that has allowed crossbows for decades, and they post that crossbows are NOT a negative. Who better would know ? Hmmmmmmmmmm interesting, isn't it ? |

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
Ok Webster.......the main component of ARCHERY to me and the vast majority of bowhunters is a bow that has a bowstring that is drawn and held by your own muscle power for as long as one can physically handle it.......(if someone can hold a bow back from 2 hrs by hand, have at it, your more man than I am.)
Regardless of $1000 worth of gadgets to accomplish this action.......that doesn't matter. Archery in my dictionary involves drawing and holding the bowstring by human muscle, not a draw loc, not a crossbow safety, not magnetic fields or swamp gas........just pull it back and let it go. If that's 2 seconds from start to finish in the case of a good longbow shooter, or the next guy holding for 1 minute with his 80% let-off. Both have to draw and physically hold that string by fingers or mechanical release for only as long as they can or need to. You as a crossbow shooter..........point,aim, remove safety and shoot. That is a gun. I've shot crossbows, they are guns, short range guns. How you think you can spin this so we as REAL archers are going to buy your "a crossbow is archery" crap is beyond me......I'll say it again very very slowly for you. IF WE DO NOT RECOGNIZE A CROSSBOW AS ARCHERY EQUIPMENT YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME.......Spin away. |

Double Creek - JK Rowlings did wonderful writing on book4/5 of the Harry Potter books. I read them all (and am re-reading the 4th and 5th books) when there was all the talk of them being Devil books etc etc. The world she created is simply amazing !

IF WE DO NOT RECOGNIZE A CROSSBOW AS ARCHERY EQUIPMENT YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME.......Spin away. Real archers ? Do you want to know what a REAL archer is ? I'll be glad to tell you. Its not you - shooting a tricked out compound. Its not my handicap uncle shooting a crossbow. Its not me shooting a Hoyt gamemaster recurve, or even me shooting a laminate longbow with carbon backing. REAL bowhunters are self bowyers who work the wood from a stave they cut themselves, whittled and tillered and bows that are a labor of sweat and love. Admire those archers because they are what archery is suppose to be, from the self bows, the sinew strings, the bamboo arrows and knapped heads. They are FAR beyond what you and I are as archery Matt / PA. "WE" recognizing what is legal archery equipment is irrelevant to what really IS archery equipment. Its like saying ' well, abortion is legal, so because of that there is no baby dying when its performed". Legal or not, there most certainly IS a baby dying, and like it or not, legal or not, crossbows are steeped in archery history - they ARE archery history from centuries back. Compound didn't even exist until 40 years ago and you think shooting one makes you a "real" bowhunters ? PLEASE !! Let me do this - tell this bow he isn't a bowhunter for me, would you ? Austin Dalton Fulton County Five year old Austin Dalton took his first deer on a December hunt with his dad Jeff Dalton. Austin took this button buck with a crossbow unassisted by his dad. Austin is from Pocahontas and took the deer while hunting in Fulton county. ![]() |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
Data here in Pa x bows are looked at as poachers tools.Been baned for so long the only people that used to have them shot deer at night, alot less noise than a 22Lr.Anybody that had one was known to be a poacher. Now we have disabled permits and special reg areas more people are using them. And maybe to no harm.
But to say you can shoot a compond or a xbow with the same ease, try shooting your dads Q2 left handed or right which ever is your off side. The bucks we hunt know our weak side.;) |

RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
hi im from alabama here. anyone in this forum from alabama knows exactly what i talk about from the following.
Last year our conservation board decided to legalize the crossbow. Now according to a bow club here in alabama which im not gonna name cuz i dont think it would be appropriate have bashed and whined and cryed about it since last april. They think people who shoot a crossbow are bad hunters. Thats not true. Now on the other hand, i was in a local dicks sporting goods here in birmingham and a guy was purchasing one and it WAS THE DAY BEFORE BOW SEASON. and i said to the guy yo know you just dont take that out in the woods and shoot(looked like one of those guys who would hunt on that website on the internet from his desk in a office who is afaid he might get dirty if he goes in the woods and not be able to answer his cell phone). He said what do u mean? I said you have to sight that in and he was completely dumbfounded. He said well i want to go hunt tomorrow so im just gonna have to make it work. I said well good luck chasing your bolts. Now this made me realize how uneducated people are about weapons. And on to of that he bought that cheap little horton one for 190 bucks walmart sells. I tried to explain to him you need anti-dry fire and what not. I have the PSE which is the exact model of the ten point titan with the same features accudraw, anti dry fire etc etc. Now I have both the compound and the crossbow or in alabama its referred to as the evil x-gun which is think is the dumbest thing ive heard, and i enjoy shooting both, but not to fond of carrying the crossbow through the woods on a hunt. Snags brushes, little heavy and just ackward to carry. Me i see nothing negative bout the crossbow. Those same guys here in alabama in this club think the crossbow is a poacher's weapon of choice i say thats Horse u know what. The poacher is the problem not the weapon. If i was gonna poach i would use a rifle thats common sense to me and risk letting someone hear the gunshot. What gives the crossbow a bad name is the people who just want to get out there and not learn their weapon and how it works. I know mine very well but still have room to sharpem my skills with it. Me i have found out its good at 40 yards max. I heard a guy in a local shop here with about 2 teeth say, dang stan i can shoot some 90 yard shots with this just like my 30/30 can and do it in bow season, i just walked off before i either laughed or got angry. Everyone here says its a bad thing but i think its the user not the weapon. Thats like saying guns kill people, well we all know thats a crock of stinking stuff to so to say the crossbow is negative isnt really fair. Just my 2 cents. |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
bawanajim - poachers tool ? Thats an old wives tale, it really is. It is true that a guy would have an easier time shooting a crossbow cross-handed ....... but thats not really a negative, is it ? If it is, what impact has that feature made towards the deer herds, seasons etc ?
KONK - It isn't ? Why ? ARGUY - did the legalization of crossbows effect your hunting seaon one little bit in any negative ways ? And for you anti-harry Potter people ......... JK Rowlings is richer than the Queen, obviously she is a pretty good writer ? |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
DC
Stealthycat, while a great guy, has always been a staunch compound basher!!! IMO, this entire thread is just that, bashing compounds, basically saying there is no difference b/t compound and xbow and that recurve is the god of all archery I an pretty sure Stealthy/data hunted this year with a compound and mechnical broadheads, when he went to Kansas this past season. |
RE: please tell me just one negative to crossbows
Data its no wivestale I have an old timers Xbow it was given to me by his daughter.I worked for this guy as a kid,he was a good man he just had a weak spot for deer chops!
Other than that it all the same, "my dogs better than yours" |
