canting

I cant stop canting my bow. I have tried changing my grip and still did not help. Any advice? By bow setup is in my signature.

Hold it straight. :D
Just kidding.
When I was a boy I had a little fiberglass recurve & usta cant it all the time. Thats just how I shot it & it was very repeatable & I got pretty good with it.

When I picked up a compound I wanted to do the same thing even tho it was over 20 years between. Didnt work well with sights tho. Anyhow I just trained myself to hold it straight & now it just happens that way.
I been thinking about getting a recurve & if I do I'll be trying to shoot instinctive again & likely be canting the bow a bit.

Yes I do shoot with a sling and have a level

Get rid of the quiver if you shoot with it on. Then practice using the level. Like make it a point to level the bow, maybe not even shooting the arrow. Draw, level, aim, let down. Over and over again till you get it right.

You say you can't stop from canting the bow. There is no such thing as can't. There is only the lack of will and discipling your mind to tell your body what to do. Don't think about NOT canting the bow. Think about what you want to do right.

I really like shooting with my quiver on because it adds weigh to my bow which makes me more stable.

What type of quiver do you have on your bow? (ie: detachable or two piece# of arrows)

I also shoot a PSE and have found their two piece quivers to be much better then the detachable ones. Reason being is the two piece fits more snug against the bow.

I agree grip could be a problem. Don't grip the bow, just let it rest in your crook of your hand and let your fingers rest gently. Not gripping. The sling will catch your bow if it jumps out of you hand. By not gripping the bow your hand the bow should be free of torque that may be introduced by your hand.

What did I say before. No such thing as can't. Can't shoot without the quiver on? You like the quiver on? It adds weight to that side of the bow which will throw things off balance. Take it off. It's only supposed to carry the arrows. Not add weight. If you need more weight then you need a good stabilizer or a heavier one if you already have one.

You have to be willing to make changes in your form and/or the equipment if you're ever going to find out what works and what doesn't. Sh&% man, I've been shooting compounds for over 30 years and I change things almost on a weekly basis just o find out what works best for me. Strings, sight, stabilizers, arrows, bow weight, drawlength. You name it. I change everything I can think of just to play.

I had the same problem. I asked my pro shop what to do and he recommended a level below the last of my pins (I shoot 20 and 30 yd pins). it takes a bit of getting use to, but I haven't looked back. accuracy is up and so is my confidence.

Try holding the bow with your middle finger, ring finger, and pinky finger curled into a fist - leaving only your thumb and forefinger extended. It is uncomfortable at first but nearly impossible to cant that way.

I'm sure this will get an uproar. But, there is nothing wrong with shooting with a cant as long as you are consistant. You may have to mount a level at the angle of your cant. If you use a sight, you will need to use one that you can adjust each pin individually right and left (not just the housing) as well as up and down.

FWIW, I also shoot with a slight cant with my compound (of course I use a cant with the longbow). I use a Loesch grip with the compound.

Agreed , there is an archer that goes by the name of oldarcher , if you saw his form you would laugh , that is until he started shooting . hes dead on and his sight is somewhere around 10 degrees canted off of his risor .

well I took 2nd on my last 3-d shoot.

Thats why I said way back there that it didnt work for me with sights wnen I started with a compound. My pins were way screwey & it was hard for me to get them where I wanted being on an angle & all. I just consciensly held the bow upright till it became natural. I still cant just a little acording to the level on my sight but it works for me.

You could also try tucking your bottom fingers on your bow hand under when you shoot. This may push the bottom of the bow over. I agree with the guys saying that there is a little bit of a mental issue here. Good job on the second place. Something may be working out in your head. It is alot better though if you can get the cant out of your bow along with the cant out of your head. If you want to take 3-D shooting to the next level you will have to be level. If you are canting it will be alot harder to get your second and third axis set on your sight. Sounds like you are well on your way.
