Just to expand on what duramax said, it sounds like you'll be in a treestand so be extra mindful of that shot placement if your shooting a boar. They have a grisly plate on their shoulders that is really tough. The very best shot you can take is a quartering away shot so you can slip in behind the plate. I took a nice hog when I was living in Florida and a Muzzy put it down within 50 yards. Good luck and let us know how you do.

So assuming I'm taking a broadside shot, should I aim further back than I would on a whitetail?

What about the "height" of the vitals? Didn't someone say they were lower on a hog than a deer? Is that right?

Thanks!!!!!!!

I've taken a few hogs and it i really fun. If you want to really make it fun stalk them from the ground. A buddy and I did it last weekend and go one that weighed about 200 lbs. really fun I had another on at 5 yards and hit some briars thought I could get it through there but I was wrong. It was really a rush though from the ground. Owe, don't take a gun though that just takes the thrill out of it. Just you and him eye to eye. As to where to shoot. about 3 inches behind the front shoulder I got passthoughs on both pigs w/ muzzy 4 blade.

I have shot several over the last 3 years with 3 blade Rocky Mountain Razors & Ironheads. Most do not recommend expandibles on hogs.. They are real tough. Shoot close, right behind the knuckle of the front leg. This is a pic of an average hog-went 60 yards-you can see where the arrow went through. Be ready for anything, thats for sure b/4 & after the hit. Good luck.

How new is your bow? Do you have enough shots through it to make sure that your string has stretched in properly? If you do, no biggy. I just didnt know if you paper tuned it after 100 shots, or if your string was allready stretched and then 100 shots ago you tuned it. Anyways, make sure its paper tuned, then group tune with a bare shaft. That should get your fixed blades to group with your field points. I know people have shot pigs with mechanicals, but they are TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH, so try to get the montecs flyin good.

i've used expandables but they were rocket steelheads and the penetrate pretty good for expandables.shot placement is everything you will not shot a montec through a hogs front shoulder.

What's the "Knuckle" of the leg...is that the "shoulder"...or the first joint closest to the body?

Also, help me understand "group tune with a bare shaft"

Thanks!!

You have a private message Tarheel. About shot placement, wait for a quartering away shot if you can, then hug the shoulder and put it through. Bunch of guys i know wait till they get close, and shoot them right through the shoulder(if they cant get a quartering shot). Id rather wait though then try to punch one through that hard plate.

9022 gave good advice, I wouldn't try to punch the hard plate either. I'm not a big fan of mechs on hogs either, if you hit that plate you may be in for a tracking expedition where as a fixed blade may do more damage.

aim anywere from 1-4 inches above were u are aiming.
about this... um... I don't think so.
