Found my first one in Ohio today. It was from a 2 y/o 8 point. Huge chunk of skull with it and he had been rubbing. Maybe it was itching him and he busted it off. I found one like that at my house a few years ago and that summer we kept seeing a buck missing an antler on that side. He must have ripped off the pedicle.
Still a little early here. I'd say over 50-60% still have both antlers.

Well Ive been watching my camera and finally last night, I finally got a pic of one of the deer around here after shedding. I posted a picture of these same two bucks less than a week ago. They are here every night, and the nine pointer shed one of his last night or yesterday sometime, he had the antler the night before.

Angus74 01-29-2005 09:41 AM

RE: any shed hunters having luck?

Here is another pic of the nine pointer, or should I say five pointer. Now all I have to do is figure out where he dropped it.

Found these the other day....didn't even know there were moose on the eastern shore of Maryland!:D

Actually I found those in Maine a few years ago (and that dog is a Saint Bernard...just so you have some frame of reference!) ;) OK....so he's a lhasa apso...but I was still impressed when I found this matched set 20 minutes after stepping out of my jeep.

I haven't been out yet this season, but am getting the urge. I'm not sure they've started dropping quite yet...but it gives you a good excuse to do some post season scouting. MD

I found a big 5 point rack that had a sticker coming out of the base back in the middle of Dec., and yesterday I found another one just like the first one, only smaller (in a different hunting area). The one yesterday was hanging on a branch.
When we got back from shed hunting I noticed some deer in my friends neighbor's field behind his property. There was 16 out in the field at noon, and 5 were bucks still carring their racks.

m00sedrool,
Are you kidding? I must say, I'm speechless. Are there any game farms near you? Where the heck did they come from? [&:]

RE: any shed hunters having luck?

Jimbo...yeah I was kidding about finding them on the eastern shore. I lived in northern Maine for several years and would snow shoe looking for moose sheds in the early spring. It's a lot of fun to find those big suckers....but packing them out can be a chore if you're lucky enough to find a few. I have another matching set, but quite a bit smaller. I've thought about having them mounted, but kind of like them laying around as part of my decor! :)

RE: any shed hunters having luck?

Ohhhhhhhh, you got me good!!! This just shows that I have to read the posts a little more carefully! :D That would be fun finding something like that. At least you didn't have to pack out all the meat from one of those bulls!

m00sedrool 01-29-2005 07:17 PM

RE: any shed hunters having luck?

You got that right. Kind of the best of both worlds...walked out with the rack and no other worries. Although Moose meat is some of the best you'll ever eat.

Where do you hunt over in Harford County? I ran into a guy on Wye Island over this way during bow season that was from Harford. That's a pretty long haul. Send me a PM if you don't want to tie up this thread.

I found my first fresh shed of the year jan.6th. Actually I found 4 fresh sheds that day,2 being a matched set off a small 8 pointer.
My count is up to 12 sheds right now,8 fresh and 4 old sheds. The last 2 weeks there's been too much snow laying for any serious shedhunting and it's snowing again now.

Snow?? Seems I remember someone wanted to find sheds in the snow. :D We got snow too but that hasn't been the problem for us. I've glassed a lot of deer in the last week and most of the bucks are still carrying. I even let Tyler walk a few hotspot feeding areas today and nothing.

The Iowa and Kansas boys are finding sheds already. They are finding sheds 50 miles north of us ( more snow ). Last year at this time we had 20 plus sheds. We only have the one shed so far. I doubt we will have many sheds on the ground by the middle of Febuary. Unreal as this year isn't much different from last year except there is a little more food for them due to poor harvest conditions from this fall and slightly warmer temps. We have had cold snaps but they don't last too long. The deer look to be in pretty good shape.

Get out there and find some sheds. That way we can see your pictures while we wait for the bucks to drop here.

I looked a little yesterday for about an hour. It was mostly just a trip to check my camera but I did a little searching as well. I checked most of the obvious places like food plots and fence crossing but didn't find a thing. Still a little early though.

RE: any shed hunters having luck?

I found two today. I saw about 40-50 deer. And only one had antlers. It was a nice 8 pointer. I saw several large body deer with no headgear. There was no doubt in my mind that they were bucks. I have never looked for sheds this early, but I believe there are a lot of antlers on the ground right now.

I haven't been yet but I have a friend that's found a few. A week ago he went out spot lighting every night for a week straight and saw a few bucks that had dropped one side already....they have dropped the other side during the night or next morning but he could never find them. I'll probably start within the next week or two....depending on my schedule.

RE: any shed hunters having luck?

TJF-I found enough sheds in the snow last year. The problem with the snow now is it's not deep enough to restrict deer to trails, but deep enough to hide the sheds.
The last couple times I've been out I've been doing more scouting for new areas. The snow really tells all.
I went out today and found my first snow shed of the yr. A nice 4pt side fresh dropped this year. All I saw were tines sticking out of the snow.I'll post a pic when I get my software for the digital working.
What's the update on that moose you and Tyler are watching?I've got my fingers crossed for you guys.
I might head back out tomorrow again.

Snow is great for finding deer sign. Congrats on the shed.

Moose headed North. Haven't seen him since last Thursday. He still had both sides but he could be headed to an area I don't have access to. This weekend we will go on a scouting trip and try to track him down. Hope he comes back but with the few bull moose around here... they just seem to wander aimlessly and cover a lot of miles in a day. We see a few bulls ever year, find moose sign when we are shed hunting but finding a moose shed is next to impossible.

Saw 9 bucks today on a short drive during dinner. Eight were carrying both sides and a forky was missing his left side. They aren't in any rush to drop in this area. Too bad since we are in a little warm spell with the snow melting.

I found my first one in Ohio thursday. It was laying right on top of the snow. Went back monday and saw 7 racked bucks two half racks and one yearling that had dropped both. The one halfrack was the match to the one I found. The biggest 8 point and another 8 got too close to each other and locked horns gave a push. They were both still on pretty good. Still a few weeks early but I m going to go out again this weekend.

i found my 1st shed ever last sunday! a dandy 5-point one side with heavy mass, must have been a 3.5 year-old, it was a shed from last year as half of it was sun-bleached.

Yesterday I was talking to one of the guys from Lone Wolf stands on the phone and he was telling me how they're going out shed hunting this weekend, and have already found a few sheds this year. It started giving me the itch to go, now you guys have just pushed me over the edge. I already emailed my hunting partner to see if he wants to talk a walk this weekend.

It's all your fault! :D

So deershed, How do you know where to start shed hunting? You do it all on you own or any help locating areas to steal, sorry I mean look in? And have you ever killed any nice deer in these area you shed hunt in or in any of areas your friends/family members hunt in? Just wondering seeing you've got a lot of nice sheds there. Finding that many sheds is just amazing:D

Went 2 hours yesterday and found one from last year. Kicked up a group of deer and 3 of the four bucks had head gear. The other was probably the oldest buck of the bunch and he was missing them. He thought he could hide his brown head and grey face with some does but I know his secret. Going today again but taking the kids .... it will be short trip.
