Anyone else start scouting yet?
with a fresh 3-4 inches of snow on the ground, i decided to head out scouting to see if the deer are still running the same patterns. Did not find as much sign as I would have liked but re affirmed some things. So has anyone started to scout yet?

RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
I have been debating hopping into the woods and dropping a quiver full of deer. On the scouting side, I'm currently trying to gain access to 500 acs. of land in Al. I'm not exactly sure where it is but I know that it was bought exclusively for turkey hunting. My bow hunting won't screw that up and besides the owners live in Alaska. Other then that, I'm looking into new spots to hunt just because I always like hunting new areas.

Here in N.Y.(Catskill Mountains) now is the best time to scout, especially drop hunting. I walk every weekend from january till march. I've walked many, many miles of property and have not even came upon coyote kill, which is strange cause there are many coyotes. Looks like good winter for deer, and better yet good hunting 4 next year.

Man you all suck! J/K:D I live 3 hours from my hunting grounds and it is under 5' of snow. I wish I could go out scouting and shed hunting. It's not like I can go out my back door and I am in the woods. Sounds to me like you all are real close to your hunting grounds. Mine is all national forest, couple hundred miles from me.

I with bob d on this one, I never really stop scouting!!!!

RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
Best time of the year to scout. You can really see the trails!
|
RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
Not yet. I like to wait untill about the end of April. That way the deer are at or near thier normal bedding/feeding routines and I can start planning for the upcoming season based on the normal habits and not just thier yarding habits.

RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
Yes i started today , took the shotgun out for a walk for wabbits , and noticed alot of new deer trails that i thought would normally jsut be deer wandering! , also noticed a few areas they seem to bed that i would normally overlook , this was a spot i dont hunt all that often!

RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
I will be putting the game cams out shortly to see who made it through the season. ;)
|
RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
I scout everyday. The best is alwas early spring.

RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
Is there even such a thing as the end of scouting? :D I like immediately after the season best. this late in the year the deer are yarded up around my parts. The reason Ilike immediately after the season best is the deer are still in their fall travel patterns and you don't need to worry about spooking and chasing deer off. I do however carry a note book and make notes while shed hunting. I've found more then one bed room and verious travel lanes durring shed hunts.

RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
I started scouting the day the season closed, although I think it is more to enjoy a walk in the woods than to actually pattern deer this early in the year. Still, with the snow on the ground, I have observed some trails that are much busier than I thought they would be. I may put in some screws soon and hunt these trails next year during December snow.

RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
yeah ,I'm scouting on this hunting forum. I've been picking the brains of other hunters regarding calling /rettling deer. Then I'll be ready next year. The signs are pretty consistant every year where I hunt at. Same area . Same bucks.

RE: Anyone else start scouting yet?
I have done a bit, however they are not following the same patterns in Vermont that they do the rest of the year. The property I hunt, the deer have all yarded up. I have been up there coyote hunting, and the coyotes have TONS of tracks surrounding this yarding area. It is a patch of real thick pines about 8 acres in total that they are yarded up in. I am tempted to go in there to look for dropped antlers, but don't want to push them around too much when they are yarded up.........I stay on the edges of it and try to call in yotes with my fawn in distress calls. 2 weeks ago I had a bunch of does come in to the calls right up the the ecaller. There are a few big deer tracks in there though, that are probably leftover bucks. Apparently I am the only one that killed a buck on this property this year, so I am sure there will be some nice ones next year. I had a dandy 8 point under my stand during archery, but it wasn't light enough for me to see the pins through my peep.
