$100 for a drop away rest...need help
I received a $100 gift certificate to Gander Mountain from the fat guy in red.
I'd like to purchase a drop-away rest and I'm looking for input as to which is the best overall. I own a Mathews Legacy and a Mathews Q2 and I may install the drop-away on one or the other. I looked at the "Trap Door" and the NAP 4000RG. Didn't get to examine the Muzzy drop away. Ideas? Comments? Who owns one and how do you like it? Most importantly, have you had any problems with it? I'm a little reluctant to buy the Trap Door because it seems like it could malfunction somehow, but I don't know enough about it to say with certainty that it could. |

VC I use the vital bow gear ultimate fall away rest! I love it and holds up pretty good! it also holds your arrow in place until you draw. Plus it's made in the USA! I paid 100$ at my shop and Gander sells the a bit cheaper!

I like the muzzy and the drop zone mysfelf. If I you have enough cable travel I would suggest the muzzy, if not the drop zone is pretty nice as well.
Just my opion any way. Paul |

Trophy Taker ! You will be way ahead of the Game, and Happy with your Choice. Look on the Pro's Bows, and you will see a Lot of them using them. Must be a Reason=They Work! Good Luck with your Dilema!

do you have your heart set on a drop away? because I switched to a Whisker Bisquit this year and I think it is great!

RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
Oh, I have one of those (vital bow gear rest), but when it was made by SME. I didn't have very good luck with it. I worked all right but it didn't hold up that well and some of the screws stripped out while I was adjusting it. I also had to set my knocking point higher in order to get it to work right. They suggest your arrow be one inch above the rest when it is in the down position so it clears well. To do this I had to have my arrow above the berger buttton hole in the riser.
Other than that I kind of liked it. I still have it in my box. I feel there are better rests for the money though. I would use a good prong rest before I would use the vital bow gear rest. Again just my opinion, but I have used that rest. Oh and the one I had used a linkage system instead of a cord, but the same operation pretty much. Paul |

I had a Nap RG 4000 on my Outback and replaced it with a Drop Zone. The drop zone in my opinion for those model of Mathews is the best. I'm sure that based on design the Trophy Taker would be good as well, I've just never used it. The NAP just didn't drop fast enough and was tricky to keep consistent on my bow.

I use a Whisker Biscuit myself not a drop rest and it groups like you wouldnt believe. Personally just something else mechanical to go wrong. Keep it simple

Hey Paul my buddy had the SME one and I agree its junk compared to the new one! He had the same problems you described. Screws just falling out and stripped! When VBG took over they overhauled the rest and it's different, better! I really like it when its hanging in the tree and I pick it up getting ready to shoot, no worries about it falling off or making any noise whatsoever! It's funny that you say you would go with a prong rest before the SME because that's what I did. We bought new rests at the same time and he got the SME and I didn't care for it and got a prong rest instead. My shop sell these 10 to 1 compared to all other rests, so they tell me! Now we all shoot them and have had no problems! JMO!

Hey vc1111 how you been old man. I have 2 of the MZE and I love them one on each of my Dartons One of them I got the first year they came out and the other the next. Both take a beating from me a lot of shooting I switch bows about every other day. I am sure the others are good rests but I will never own anything but the Muzzy.

Well here's a vote for MZE ,I have it installed on my BowTech Patriot Dually ,I've had it installed for almost a year now and only had to tweek once since I hadn't totally installed it right .But I've hunted in the very cold winfd and snow this year and it worked flawlessly no freezing or breaking and when I needed to draw it worked as it should.

Check out the QAD Ultrest as well. Full containment dropaway rest that will not drop down if you decide to let off. I've never tried the Muzzy, but it seems lots of archers love it.

Golden Key Futura TKO. Awesome drop away rest and on sale (I think) for $35 at Gander Mountain. I have the VBG rest, and while I took the little arrow holder off, it worked great either way.

Muzzy Zero effect,I doubt very much that I would try any thing else,I've tried the whisker Biscuit, and didn't like it.MZE is a simple no nonsense rest.

RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
We have used the GKF TKO and performed great, its easy to setup, quick to tune and is a simple to use rest making it a breeze to setup and use.... not to many parts to complicate its use .
I personally used the GKF Infiniti Dropaway for ASA 3D Competition last year and was so impressed with it that I decided to use it for bowhunting this year and it has performed FLAWLESSLY....... I originally wasnt sure of how it would hold up to the abuse my equiptment takes in the field while bowhunting, but it has held up perfectly... it features screws that self lock so you dont have to tighten down your ajustment screws :D I used it to take a Possum, Turkey, Doe and 8 point Buck this season. I personally cant speak to any other dropaway rests as I have never shot any other dropaway rests only GKF;) |
RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
The MZE was made for the Q2 . Excelent match up , I dont know about the fx but bet it would work well with it allso . I know the Q2+MZE , is a great setup as I hunted that set up for about 3 years , and thats a looooong time for me to stick with anything , considering how often I change gear .

RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
I would suggest the Trophy Ridge Drop Zone or the MZE as well. Certainly the best fallways out there IMO. I've had nothing but excellent results from my DZ equipped rigs over the past couple seasons! The DZ certainly demands a very serious look before you decide on any rest.

RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
A couple of really good rests are on the market. I myself have grown to really like the Trophy Taker Shakey hunter. It is about the best hunting rest I have found for myself. Another good rest is the Dropzone. I have shot both the Trophy Taker & the Dropzone & I have grown to like the Trophy Taker better.

RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
I would say stay away from the trap door.
I bought one early last year and it malfunctioned at a 3-D shoot. The launcher arm was stuck in the up position it would not move. I returned it and got another one. About a week later this one broke to also oat a 3-D shoot. But this time the launcher arm would not cock into the fire position. So bascially I wasted $80 on it. They redesigned it from the model I had though. So maybe the new one isn't such a POS. For what I would suggest for a drop away is either the Trophy Taker shakey hunter or the dropzone. Both work flawlessly. I have used the APA ultimate twister and have mixed feelings about it. Some days I liked it some days I didnt[&:] There are some other drop aways I would like to try but haven't yet. Good luck. |
RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
vc1111, I think you are making a good decision by going to a dropaway. I have a NAP quicktune and I definely get better groups with it than I did with a two prong or launcher type rest. I would guess that most brands would give the same results. I think a WB would rob you of speed on downrange shots but this is probably not a problem for hunting.JMHO.

RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
One thing to note also on the MZE and the reason I like it so much ,look at the cradling arm compared to any of the others. If you hunt with this rest and hang your bow, then have to make that quick shot, you won't have to worry about that arrow falling off the rest, you can darn near shoot up side down with it ,and not worry about the arrow falling off the rest,I dont think that any others besides the WB would do this. Also with the mole skin that comes with the rest it is extreamly quiet.ijim I have installed them on the Mathews FX bow too it works sweet on it.I have one on my Hoyt Razer tech.

RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
Does anyone know if MZE makes a drop away for the Mathews Legacy and other Mathews bows using the roller guard? The one model that I looked up online had an arm on it that seemed rather large and clumsy looking, but like I said, I haven't seen one up close yet, so I could be wrong on that idea.
I appreciate all the thoughtful replies. I'm carefully reading every one of them. I'm beginning to see trade offs between models like the Trap Door, which has no cables but may not be as reliable, and the others that use a cable, which seems to me could become stretched or snagged by the rigors of bowhunting in or near heavy cover. |
RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
Yeah VC I beleive that they do make them for the Mahews Legacy bows as well as any with the rollerguard. If Len from Maryland is on the techy forums he could definately answer ,because I know he has installed a bunch at his shop. Also Muzzy has a web addy that can answer any question that you may have. Here Ya go VC http://www.shopatron.com/product/pro...933.1940.0.0.0

RE: $100 for a drop away rest...need help
My personal favorite drop away is the Muzzy. Golden key makes a nice one in the tko, and the Trophy taker shakey hunter is another excellent choice.

I Have Never Used The Muzzy But It Looks Cumbersome & Bulky.
