I have no idea...........just trying to help. The guy I used doesn't do mounts for a living so he has no vested interest in pumping them out as fast as possible........he simply does them because he enjoys it and only does a few a year now. All I can say for sure is that he has mounts in his shop that are over 20 years old and they look brand new......that's something that really appealed to me and something he says is a direct result of a professionally tanned hide.

I hope your mount looks great for 50 years man.


How does your taxidermist KNOW those chemicals will keep your mount looking great for decades??

Does he have any that old that were done with that stuff??


What did you pay out of curiosity??

It is funny how many guys deny that bucks size. Everyone needs to remember that the score is gross non-typical, not net typical! It is still an amazing buck that I would sure be proud of!

Dang Atlas, $460.00 seems a little steep for a shoulder mount. My buck is at the taxidermist now, and he tans the hide! He charges $310.00 for a shoulder mount, and this guy does some amazing work. When I am there, guys are always telling him to enter some taxidermy contests, but its like he said, that would take time out of his schedule that he could be working on his customers products, and those customers are the ones paying him!

Very nice deer buckeye, belated congratulations since I joined the board a little after you had taken him.

I am sure the question about his score boils down to the net versus gross as mentioned above. All those deductions add up and I have no problem believing he is near 160 gross and 135 net. The problem is a when people compare him in their head to other 160 class bucks that were probably scored net since that is the official P&Y method for typicals. My biggest is a typical 8 point that scored 152 7/8 net and his rack dwarfs this one even though mine only scored 156 6/8 gross.

Some of that price was the cost of sending the hide across the country and getting it tanned in Oregon.

I knew NOTHING about mounts when I got him done..........now that I know a little bit I am very happy I took it to him. There are so many little things that make the difference between a good mount and a great one. I couldn't care less about the money as long as I get a quality mount that will last a lifetime.

Not to mention that is my first mount in 17 years of hunting so it's not like I have to cough up that much cash EVERY year [8D]

460 bucks seems about right. I took mine in to my taxidermist and it was 450 for a regular shoulder mount and 470 for the pedestal mount. But my taxidermist has won several competitions and does a really great job. If I recall right, Cornfed also uses him or has in the past. He can vouge for his work.

Hey, as long as it looks great, the price doesn't matter. You can't put a price on the memory of the hunt that the mount will bring back, but it is nice to save some $$$$ This is my first shoulder mount that I am having done, and I can't wait to see the results, even though it is gonna be awhile. I was the 48th rifle killed rack brought in, not to mention that he is putting his finishing touches on the archery bucks! I am getting a McKensize Semi-Sneek right turn mount! I got a chance to see my b-friends buck (a McKenzie Joe Budder Full Sneek left turn) and it looked amazing. I had to brag to Matt about it, and he turned it into 20 questions as he hasn't seen it yet! It should be done within the next few weeks and I will get some pics to show you guys!

Hey buckeye,great deer and I have no dought that the buck will gross 160.He looks alot like mine from last year and he was 162 I think.Great deer and an awesome mount,congrats again.
My taxidermist charges $500 to get one done,I have 3 done by him and they turned out great.I think my next one will be the "sneak"
Only thing I cant believe is you getting them back so soon,took almost 4-6 months a piece for mine[:o]

I guess we really don't know. The chemicals he uses has not been around that long to test over decades. He charges around $300 depends on what all you want done. Such as plaques, lip curls, flemings and such.

Thanks BM and my point about the scoring. People are to fast to yell liar than to actually look at the buck and figure it out.

I agree. The deer hunting contest called for gross non typical score so this is the score I posted. I also said it would net mid 130's. Some still wanted to argue.

What can ya do though? I will listen to them tell me my tape is broke or whatever else they wish. If it makes him and some others feel better about them selves then go right on ahead. I know what the deal is and truthfully that is all that really matters.

Just for the record, I never doubted or insuated you were inflating the score.

My earlier posts about scoring were centered around some deer that people were posting as scoring in the low 100's, when in fact they appeared to be 90's or less.

DC I remember your posts about scores in the contest.

It was before I even took my buck this fall. I did notice that the guys who have and do take some of the bigger bucks each year did not question my score posted.

I hope everything works out for you and the mount lasts forever. I only asked questions because I don't want to see a fellow hunter get the short end of the stick when it comes to something so irreplaceable as a head mount.

I did do some research on taxidermy.net and it appears that some of the newer chemicals coming out are just as good as the traditional methods. I guess my taxidermist has just been doing it the traditional way for so long, he just sticks to what he knows.

I hope you really dont care about what people think or what he scores, when i saw the deer i didnt think 161 but who cares, im not one to judge you and if i were you i wouldnt give two cents on what any other person on the board thiks he scores because you are the one with the tape, after all you know as well as i do there are alot of freakin pro's on this board:eek:

I really don't care what people think he scores. I care that some people think I would lie or cheat in the bowhunting contest.

I mean it's a TEAM contest not an individual contest. I have nothing to gain by stretching the tape purposely as some said I did. I am not like that. You can tell by many of my posts I am an honest guy and have no problem sharing my thoughts, right or wrong on many subjects here on the board.

I also have 5 or 6 friends who use the board. How big of an A$$ would one look like lying on the internet for everybody and your friends to see? Thats just not me.

Hey....it's an honor system for the contest and we all have to have faith in each other. It is what it is....one heck of a deer and Buckeye deserves a big congrats for backing up his big mouth....I think that was a compliment...anyhow

After remeasuring my buck this year I found I hade a little error!! He really scores 175 4/8!!:D:D
