Close up pics of 2004 contest buck

Well I recieved alot of supportive PMs over the "controversy" from the score of this buck that a couple members gave me. Alot of members said to go take some close ups and post them.

The taxi mounted him so I went down to snap some pics. I will have him home in about 2 weeks or so.

Well here they are.

LOL you are one of "them" who questioned from the first thread. No it isn't 140.

Hey Buckeye,
Where you at in NE Ohio? Who's mounting it..kinda looks like Pauls Taxidermy from the shop pics.?

I am in Trumbull county. It was mounted by Fritz Birkheimer of Ultimate wildlife creations from Warren Ohio.

There is no way that buck is even over 150". I think you posted he was 161" and some change. Did you count the spread measuement twice? I think your measure tape is screwed up or something.

OK I grew up in Trumbull County..Hubbard..now in North Lima...Mahoning County. Without dispelling your secret spot, which I wouldn't do either, where you Hunting.

I mostly stick to the Columbiana area.

I hunt over in Trumbull and Portage counties mostly. This one came from Trumbull. Newton Twp. to be exact.

Take the bottom pic for example. A mature bucks ears are around 6 inches long from where they attach to the head to the tip of the ear give or take. Compare that ear to its mains and G's

There is no doubt it is a nice buck...but it is nowhere near 160".

Great looking mount, excellent choice of pose. Thats one of the better mounts that I've seen outside of Texas :D Even though he drinks on the job, the taxidermist still does a nice job. Congrats on the buck and make sure to post pictures when you finally get him on your wall.

buckeye 12-15-2004 02:53 PM

There are also 2 members that have saw this deer in person. In fact one of them helped drag it out. The other hunts the property as well.

Mightymitehntr27 < helped drag

Treetalker < hunts the farm

Maybe you could ask them their opinions?

Buckeyebuckhntr:

Nice mount and buck.

But I doubt that buck scores 161 3/8, I just scored it myself using those exact measurements you had posted, and for P and Y is scored 135 4/8, Buckmasters 142 5/8, and Safari Club International 161 1/8. There are a lot of deductions because of the difference in measurments, and not to mention there is no G-4 on the one antler. The total of abnormal points is 8 6/8, that is deducted because the buck is a Typical. The difference in measurments on tine length and circumfrence totals 17 1/8. Right there you have 25 7/8 in deductions.

But it is a fine buck, no doubt there!

buckeye 12-15-2004 02:57 PM

3 shot

For the contest it is gross non typical score not gross typical:)

So safari club score is the one that counts for the contest;)

If that deer scores anything over 130, I would be surprised!!!;)

Actually I believe it is close. All those points start adding up really quick!!

I do have one question though....

Left side

MB 26 4/8
G1 3 6/8
G2 10 2/8
G3 9

Right side

MB 24 5/8
G1 4 4/8
G2 9 3/8
G3 8 6/8
G4 3 6/8
Do you have left and right flip flopped or is it just my imagination? From what I can tell the right side has 3 scorable and the left has 4 scorable.

buckeye 12-15-2004 03:04 PM

A buck gets 4 mass measurements per side no matter the number of points

Nice deer ,thats all that matters.Contest I wonder sometimes ?? Soon hunters will be taking steroids. Hunting is not suppose to be a competition. Deer are monted and scored in respect of the animal, not the glory of the hunter

Yep, I can see how he grosses 160. The original glance shows 145 inch deer, however, it is deceiving, b/c he has another 10+ inches of junk points.

Either way, one hell of a deer!!

Hasn't been that long. You layed the tape down on a pretty good one last year:) Plus you still have the rut this year? Don't it hit late Dec and Early Jan down there?

I have a question of how your taxidermist gets your deer done so fast? All the taxidermists around here that are good are backed up for fourteen months or more and when they are not backed up it still takes 6 or 7 months at the least. Does your guy tan the hide himself?

NICE Buck though!

Neck

I hope you see one in your woods too[8D]

He dressed out at 185#

The manikin is called a full sneek. It is made by Mckenzie.

Sorry I did not see that at all.

In reality it takes 1 day to mount a deer. 2 weeks for it to dry and one day to touch it up with paint.

So really it only takes 16 days to 100% complete a deer mount.

You don't have to send them out to be tanned anymore. There are chemicals they put on the hide to preserve it.

Fritz and I are good friends. I get to cut in line every year:)

Not sure who told you that but you may want to ask someone about that for sure.

That buck I have mounted was sent to Oregon to be professionally tanned and it took 6 months to get him done. I asked why he did it that way and he said that if you don't tan them they will not last.....period. Someday it will fall apart. Maybe not in 5 years but it will happen eventually he said. He is maybe the most respected taxidermist in my area and only does mounts now if you know him personally (my wife's cousin got me in ;)) He has been doing it for 35 years so I just thought I would pass that on to you.

I thought the same thing when I saw you had him done already.........seems fast.

Great buck.......looks even better then he did on the ground. I personally don't like the sneak pose but mine is a McKensie frame as well........I think they look great.

I don't care what he scores and you know that...............the only comment I made was that their were a couple bucks taken that looked bigger then him that were scored lower.

Whatever number ends up being stuck on him is nothing compared to the memories of that hunt you...........and YOU ALONE get to replay in your mind forever.

Now THAT is a trophy no one can put a number on ;)

Congrats again and great job

I got last years buck back in 4 weeks from him.

This year it will be about 5 weeks.

He says the chemicals are just as good as tanning the hide. Who knows the last time your taxi looked into the chemicals for tanning purposes. Technology moves along so fast nowadays.

Fritz is a good friend and I know he would not steer me wrong.

Thanks for the heads up Atlas.
