How many of you can last all day....
I was just wondering how many of you all can stay in your stand of daylight to dark and how you do it? I've tried many a time to stay in all day and no matter how hard I try I can't make it. My back and legs start aching and I just have to come out for a little bit. So if you can do it please let me know how you deal with the pains and boredom.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
First off It's not as hard on your body if your in a comfortable stand like a Summit. I can't sit all day if I don't have the confidence in the area and or it's not an "all day" location. Most of the time I prepare myself for an all dayer mentaly. Other times I just see action up until it would be normal time to leave and thus I stick it out. Long hours on stand calls for day dreaming! And like work, if your staring at your watch the time will not pass bye very fast. I've found that if you make it out to be such a big deal, it will be. Just do it and think nothing of it and have a good time. It really turns out to be enjoyable time well spent and we all know the more time spent in a tree the better the chances for success. And for some, like myself success rides on memories in the woods.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
I usually always sit dark to dark, if I feel that I'm in a decent location.
In the early season, it's warm enough to read - so I buy a good book (magazines are too crinkly and make too much racket). Once college football season starts, I take a good walkman with earbuds. My Nittany Lions come on at noon, so that soaks up the 12-4 doldrums. Your Mountaineers usually play pretty early, too, and I catch them on WVAQ. One earbud set really low will NOT compromise your ability to hear deer approaching. I usually look for a "double tree" to set up in, where my stand fits neatly between two trees. This makes it nice to hang up your pack, get out all your stuff and really get comfortable. Take some soft candy and drink and a pee jug. My cell phone is free on weekends, so I take the phone and my earbud. I make some calls throughout the day, get the hunting reports from all the boys, call the fiancee to tell her that I'm studying or working real hard and that I will be late : ) Finally, I don't have one, but those new game boys look like they could really suck up some idle time. Another important aspect is to be prepared for inclement, warm, or cold weather. Know what's coming, and when. Take a poncho. Electronics make an awesome waste of time, but you MUST be careful to not have any speakers going, and use earbuds to eliminate all sound. As far as comfort goes, you're on your own. I hunt out of a Summit Bushmaster, and I have two Loggy Bayou's. None of them are exactly a la-z-boy, but you just have to endure the discomfort. The key is keeping your mind off how bored or stiff you are, and stay focused on the task at hand. |
RE: How many of you can last all day....
I can stay in the woods all day but not strictly in my stand. The longest I have stayed in my stand was 9 hours, man that was a long haul and I wanted to see how long I can do it for.It was from 5:30 till a little after 2.When I got out of my truck I got dressed and done some good stretches on the ground before I made my walk into the woods. Now remember also this was early in the season as well.I couldent do it now as there is 1 foot of snow on the ground and "COLD" my hands and feet just cant take it.One thing I done that day on stand was when the deer stopped moving or seemed to anyways I just closed my eyes but kept my ears open for a bit,got up stretched some more sat down for as long as I could stand it and repeated the process.
If I was going to be in the woods all day then I would be in my stand till mid morn and go for a little walk, maybe have my lunch on the ground, check out the area, being as scent free as possible and return to stand early in the afternoon. Now walking mid morn I mean away from my immediate area I am hunting, maybe check out the other end of property I am hunting(I hunt on 1 parcil of 1000 acres myself)and other parcils in different locations. To sit on stand all day takes alot of dedication and I personally dont know anyone who can do it,especially here when it gets cold:) |
RE: How many of you can last all day....
WEll i like to bring a magazine or book to pass the time. I know what you mean by being hard on your body. I hunted dusk till dawn for 3days in a row and my body hurt! I am in average shape(could be better, but its the holidays) and i was just drained. I have a summit viper which is very comfortable, i recommend that you stretch really good before you climb nto your stand for a days hunt, have plenty of water and snacks, and somthing to read or write with, i like to write about my days hunt and what i see and smell and all that good stuff.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
I've done it only a handful of times! The the only times I have done it is when I was in my climber. Keeps me comfortable. I bring food....lots of it! Before I go out though I put all my food in zip lock bags. Nothing is noisier in the woods than a bad of doritos!!! Any candy bars...granola bars, etc...take out oif the packages and put in zip locks! Also, I bring things to read. I have also been known to take a nap! Not sure if this counts, but I may climb down for a few minutes and walk around a different area in order to scout it out. This helps shake the cobwebs out and it it's cold out helps warm you back up!

RE: How many of you can last all day....
I do it pretty regularly starting in early Nov. I just take some food and water with me and it's not really a big deal. A lot of the time I hunt with someone else and we carry radios and talk back and forth once an hour which helps pass the time. I have a lot of confidence in the spot that I am going to tomorrow so getting bored shouldn't even be an issue. I found a spot in the bottoms, on a different WMA than I have been hunting, that had upwards of hundred piles of poop and literally every leave turned over in a spot that was roughly 100 yards by 100 yards. Some of the poop was old but a lot of it was new. I am assuming that it took several deer to do this and since a lot of the poop is old I am also assuming that this area has been uppressured for some time. So, I am hoping that mister big is hanging around since the other deer obviously feel safe there. My hopes and expectations are set pretty high for this spot and most likely won't be realized. But, it's easy to stay on stand when you expect it break loose at any minute.
PS Dress warmer than actual conditions when hunting all day. It's hard to maintain your body heat over a long period of time. So if it's 38 I dress for 28. |

Not me, I'm too impatient. About 4-5 hrs is all I can handle

I hunt all day on occasion in a single stand, but not normally. It kinda sucks though watching deer crossing in a field in front of you while your eating lunch in a truck. Which happens to us on more then a few occasions!![:@]:D |
RE: How many of you can last all day....
I can hunt all day and do so, maybe 3-6 times a season, but for the most part, I'm just sneaking out when I can, usually after work. That means once time changes I'm hurrying to get in the woods so I can spend maybe an hour on stand. Would love to have the chance for all day stands more often.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
I have just killed to many deer in the last few years between 10 and 2 to not be out there when I can.
|
RE: How many of you can last all day....
I have done it, dark to dark. Pretty tough on the body and mind. I have stayed in the tree the whole time, not getting down even once. Lately I will hunt from dark to about 2 o'clock and go home. Another alternative is to go in about 10 am and hunt till dark. If you want to live in the tree you gotta have a top notch stand that is comfy. I recommend a summit climber or one of the newer ladders with the suspended seat and arm rests. I like to nestle the ladder between triple trunks. This breaks the wind good. Wind makes you cold. Wind makes you get down early. Buy some good fleece clothing.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
Got some great ideas guys keep'um coming. My bro is one of those guys that can spend 5-6 days in a row going from dark til dark but I have yet to be able to hang. But I was thinking that next year I would try to do it on my vacation.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
Man it has been a looooong time since I've been able to do that. It had to have been about a decade ago when I was 18 years old... Oh you mean hunting?:D ummm, seeing as I go crazy everytime I drive passed any open field with a patch of woods in the background, it's easy as pie! Just dress for it and have food, drink, and an empty milk container ready.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
Everyone basically has the same idea. Get comfortable, warm, and find something that will keep you occupied during the down times. There has been too many deer killed by family and friends of mine during the mid day for me not to be in the stand all day, especially during the rutting periods. Just this year alone, my dad shot a 125" deer at 2:30 pm, my little brother shot one at 1:30pm, and my buddy shot a 196" monster at 11:05 am. Just goes to show that it does pay off. I try to pack food that will give you energy, such as; candy bars, p-nut butter and jelly, power bars, etc. One of the biggest things that I have to do is to get my mind set right. I have to tell myself I am going to sit all day no matter what happens. If I think to myself that if something goes this way or that way then I will get down, then I usually end up getting down. I take a video camera sometimes and film the animals I see. Just keep in mind, at any time big boy could show up, that's enough incintive to keep me in the tree. Good luck.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
How many of you can last all day.... all joking aside... i can sit in teh woods all day long.. i dont bring anything with me... just me and teh woods... toccupy my time by glassing the fields, watching nature, from the hawks, to the kestrels, to the tree rats. and even the yotes that cruise by form time to time... there is plenty to think about too! :D eat some venison jerky from that monster 130# dressed doe i got early in the season... you know typical hunter stuff! if you have any electronic poker games, i have tried those but you have to know how to turn the volume off on those! they can be LOUD! RE: How many of you can last all day....
For me I only tempt it when the season calls for it, i.e pre-rut and rut. The rest of the season I dont bother unless conditions are right like weather fronts coming and going or major changes in food sources like dropping of persimmons or a fresh cut bean or corn field. i pass the time several ways. 1. if you hunt with a partner use 2-way radios with ear pieces they pass the time nicely BS'ing about what ever. Bring a hunting book, or even a game boy like some one else suggested. But what ever you do bring confidence in your stand. if your not 100% sure your in the right spot it will be almost impossible to stay the course. Also pack a lunch your stomach is your number one enemy!! and one more thing bring either a jug or a urine bladder to releive yourself;)

RE: How many of you can last all day....
at 35 years old i can say that i'm at a point I might be able to. I saw an honest 180" + whitetail this fall and I could have sat all day waiting for him. The way i chose to hunt I was sitting for 6 hours and knowing that monster was close kept me going - no naps, no othing but watching

RE: How many of you can last all day....
When I was younger it wasn't a problem. Bad back prevents all day sits now.
Luckily I can still last all night.[8D]:D;):D:eek: |
RE: How many of you can last all day....
I am with Double Creek. I can't sit still that long.

RE: How many of you can last all day....
Did it last season for 3 days in a row, well almost 3 trying to hunt a big buck i had seen in the area. But I guess I went what you would calll kinda stir crazy from it... like I just started feeling weird it freaked me out, so i have only sat for a 7-8 hour days this year.. Its tough..

RE: How many of you can last all day....
I've done it and it isn't that bad at all. Most of all you need a comfortable stand like a Summit. If you have a time when there is not a lot of activity going on, a book or magazine is a good thing to have. I only bring a bottle of water and a couple of candy bars to hold me over till I get home again. It is a lot of fun if you are able to do it, but you have to put your mind to it though and stick with your plan. I've seen some of the best deer ever during the off peak times of day, rut or not. Good luck

RE: How many of you can last all day....
My first post in this forum
A few years ago my wife bought me a grand slam climber with the hammock seat and , when I complained that the wind was getting to me she got some real tree type fabric and cut out attachable velcro sides for it..... I LOVE this thing, I have never been in such a comfortable quiet stand it was the single biggest factor in allowing me to stay on stand all day. I strap in just in case but it would be damn near impossible to fall out even when i fall asleep (which by the way I have never been able to do in my usual seat + platform. I hunt hard in the morning until about 11:00 am and then break and start hunting hard again at about 12:30 1 until dark , during my break I get up stretch my legs, check my gear etc... I found a cool little device in Canada called a digital book, you can get software that contains a few book and you just click through the screens to read...you can bookmark your place or blow up the text if you have bad eyesight...totally quiet too I also like lots of others have said make sure I take extra clothes , food, water and something to pee in.... I recently started hunting huge tracks of public land so I got a GPS and things I may need if I wound up getting stuck or hurt and cant get out.. comfort.safety and confidence, thats what you need to be out there all day |
RE: How many of you can last all day....
During the rut if I hunt the morning, take a break, hunt the midday, take a break and hunt the evening. Otherwise I hunt the first and last three. Deer in our woods move late in the morning, so going in before light is a waste. I go in when I can see and don't use a light. The majority of deer we see, including big bucks, are about 2 hours after light and right before dark in the evening (last 1/2 hour). Mid day hunting in my area in September and October early season is not productive as the deer are bedded unless they are pushed. I try to let trail cams take a lot of the pain, instead of my ass, when it comes to patterning buck movement times.
