Currently, my arrows weigh low 400's as is with the 100 grain broadheads. I'm considering switching to 125 grains. Here's my delimma:

I'm trying my best not to lose anymore fps at the same time trying to gain a little knock down power. From what I've been reading here, it appears some of you feel that a heavier arrow will penetrate better and expire a deer in less time. My thought is that if I put the arrow where it needs to be, 100 grains will put'em down much the same as 125's will. A whole through the lungs is a hole nontheless. What are your thoughts on this? Also, will 25 more grains actually penetrate all that much better? Lastly, what cutting diameter would you recommend for a 400ish grain arrow? - I want to be able to pass through with the largest cutting diameter possible that will still allow it. (55lb draw at 200ish fps)

If it is shooting good then stick with what you got. You can't add more weight for more momentum and not loose speed. More weight equals less speed.


A 1 1/8 inch hole is a 1 1/8 inch hole regardless fo the weight of the head.

i used to shoot almost the same poundage and fps as you. I shot 125's and found that they just drop too much at 30 yards. I went back to 100's.

Broadhead weight has little to do with killing the animal and alot to do with the balance of the arrow as a whole. If you shoot light carbons, for instance, you should not add excessive weight to the front of the arrow. This will throw your balance too far forward and blow the tuning off the charts. I shoot light, thin carbons and use 85gr. broadheads, so that my arrow is not front heavy. As a rule, heavy shaft-heavy broadhead, light shaft-light broadhead. Arrow length factors in somewhat too. If you use a long carbon, you could conceivably go up to a 100-125 grain broadhead. I think my broadheads are about 1 1/8" cutting diameter. That is PLENTY.

there is no such thing as knock down power in bow hunting. The object of the game is to get the animal to bleed out in the shortest time possible. In my oppinion, bow tune, broadhead sharpness and shot placement are more important than the extra momentum 25 grains would give you.
