RE: Who here strictly bowhunts?

2 years now bow only. I still love guns but not sure if I will ever hunt with one again. Still much to learn bow hunting and enjoying every bit of it. Took 1 doe so far, missed an 8 point and 3 does and lost 1 doe. Have been very selective in shots, though, and have lost count on how many I've passed on. Not as proficient (sp?) as with a rifle, (NOT YET), but cannot measure how much more enjoyable and so glad I will be able to pass on to my kids.

I do both gun and bow. If I had to give up one no doubt about it would be the gun. Gun season is here and then it's gone. Bow season here in Kansas started Oct. 1 and doesn't end till Jan. 31. Thats a lot of hunting time. Maybe some pepole only like to hunt just a couple weeks but i would rather hunt 3 months instead of just a couple weeks.

Yep. I do. Not that I have any problem with any one smokin one with some really fast lead, but I killed my first deer with a bow last year, and now I even spring turkey hunt with a bow. It's tough, though....I just told myself it was with a bow or nothing at all. This leaves out, of course, small game....I do hunt squirrels and such with a bow, but not exclusively.

I bowhunt for deer, but shotgun for rabit, squirrel, pheasant, and duck.

strictly bowhunting for me. I have yet to take a turkey, missed two. A lot more challenging than shotgun. I get a deer every year with my bow, but those turkey are smarter than people give them credit for.

I have been hunting deer for close to 20 years now and have never used anything but a bow. I live in NW Ohio and the stuff I see during slug law here is sickening. I don't want to be any part of it. I love the up close and personal challenge that the bow affords me. The thought of shooting a deer 100 yards away just doesn't get me pumped at all. BOW ONLY FOR ME!!

When I was younger I would shake all over when I shot a deer with a gun but the last several deer I shot with a gun I didn't get that it was only the end of the fun and the begining of the work.
A few years ago I started bowhunting, A couple of years later I killed a very small button buck I was shaking all over and laughing outloud, this year I took my rifle only one time when my oldest son was home for Thangiving.
I did kill a nice 8 point with my bow I was laughing so hard when I got home I could hardly tell my wife.

RE: Who here strictly bowhunts?

I hunt with both bow and rifle. This year took a doe before gun season with my bow and a small rack 8 point with my rifle during firearms season. I really got into archery hunting this year spending alot more time in the woods. Have to say that I felt better about the doe I harvested with bow than the buck with rifle.
I don't want to say that there is anything wrong with rifle hunting. Its just that it doesn't seem as challenging. By that I mean you just don't have to get as close to the game and fool their senses as much. Guess that is why I choose to archery hunt over rifle most of the time.

I also strictly bow hunt. I took 2 does this past season and had to let a nice 8 walk due to a few limbs in the way. I shoot a outback and would not dream of hunting with anything else ( gun).

RE: Who here strictly bowhunts?

Yes indeed, strictly bowhunt! Like most on this thread, the passion bow hunting brings is about skill and knowledge of whitetails and there habitat!

Like pro hunter Greg Miller, [proven whitetail tactics], great book, the passion and his preference is the bow and arrow. Adding taking only mature bucks, you have all the work and skills at your own ability. To take consistently mature bucks with a bow is the ultimate challenge few will ever experience! Most will never achieve this because of the tremendous personal challenge, skill mature whitetails command.

First thing needed, is to find where there are! There bedding grounds and time. They are out there and indeed on public land.

The high tech bows cannot get much better than they are today! It comes down to you, own dedication and persistent attitude with support of family and friends.

My own consideration, outside of a bow and 3rd year not being able to ambush one particular BIG tropy buck is the thought of getting Big Boy next season with a one shot black powder Knight Revolution. However, it just would not make me feel the same as if I got him with my Conquest 3.

I could not place an accurate number of whitetails that may have been put in the freezer with a firearm. But I know of one I did over twenty years ago. Since then, it has been just me and my bow. We all need to share this sport of the bowhunt with a new archer each and every year. Sponsor a fellow co-worker and his son, daughter on your next hunt. Set them up, teach them the sport of archery and the challenge it offers.

99% bow hunt only the last 4 years - the only not bow hunt was last year late muzzleloader season for one day. Did manage to get a nice 8 point withe muzzleloader but the feeling just wasn't the same as it is when you get that big boy under your stand with a bow as your weapon.

RE: Who here strictly bowhunts?

started with a rifle then discovered true love (my bow) 10 years now. The only animal i have shot with a rifle in ten years was a buffalo.
and the only reason i used a rifle is because its been in my family for many years and no one has never taken a buffalo with it. My next buffalo will be with my bow. My buddies used bows and had no problems.

RE: Who here strictly bowhunts?

Approx. 99% bowhunting only for deer. This year, 3 of the 6 deer I have taken were killed during various gun seasons using my bow.

I am not about to lose my arrows at doves yet.
Coug, funny you say that. At our local 3d shoot, they have a target with 5 doves sitting on limbs that they use for the 2 day tourny shoot. Talk about a fun target, kill zone is about 2" in diameter if that. They always have it as the last target right by the area where everybody eats, so there is usually people there watching me miss them blasted things!!

HOOTENANNY 01-12-2005 02:44 PM

RE: Who here strictly bowhunts?

how many yards away is that 2" target? hope there is something behind to stop the arrows. in my case anyway.
