MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

Okay guys, here is the deal.

Today, my aunt stopped in at my house! She had just seen a local buck that is a legend as it walked in front of her car! There are seriously well over 100 people who know about this buck and who are chasing this buck. I have never seen this deer, but from what I have heard, this deer is a typical that would range somewhere in the 190" range, yes, 190"! The dilema is that this buck is "believed" to be on a huge farm open to hunters. This place has been literally packed with hunters, a major archery shop owner had actually shut his shop entirely down since 2 weeks before archery season so he could try to pattern this buck. Well, the buck has moved and is now over 1-1/2 miles away. It is hanging out in private property that is used by a greenhouse business! The thing is that my cousin works at this place and said that I could hunt this property! I would be the only person hunting this property!

Now, the dilema. Would you take your bow knowing that it would be a better feeling to harvest the buck with a bow, or would you take your rifle knowing that it is your best chance at this absolute giant?

Wow tough choice. I personally would take my bow but if you feel more confident or satified with maybe getting it with a rifle then take it. Either way sounds like you will be one popular guy if you get it.

Jason!

It would be the proudest moment in my life if I was able to take this legend with my bow ,You said he's a legend and what better way to take him than with your Liberty he deserve's this respect from you a rifle wouldn't be giving him credit for being the legend you say that he is. I'm sure it would be fine to take him with your rifle but to me the ultimate would be the bow.If you didn't get him this year he most likely would still be around for next season,he's obviously very wise to hunter's and is not going to be easy to take .

If I were you it would be the bow,and knowing a little about you ,I'm sure that's what your thinking as well .

Now get out there and try and get him if you can
Good luck bud

If you take it with a gun you will regret it. " Bow Only"

Easy choice: Do you want to have had the satisfaction of having hunted him, or remember the feeling of having simply shot him?

After making darn sure I had permission (talking to actual owner of property and not just employee!;)) I'd grab my bow and head out.

Good luck to ya!

If its rifle season, i'd have my rifle.
If that buck passes 50 yards from you in the brush and you have your bow in your hand will you be sitting there thinking, "#$%@, i shoulda brought the rifle!!"??
If not, go ahead and take the bow, it sure would be awesome to take him with a bow. If so, take the rifle.

It shouldn't matter what you use to kill it as long as it goes down cleanly .

I wish I had your problem. Go w/ your gut.

In my opinion, it depends on the outlay of the land and where you plan on hunting. If your chosen spot doesn't really feel like a good bow spot, take the rifle. There's nothing wrong w/ shooting a deer w/ a gun...but with this being the bow forum and you asking for some opinions on it, I have a good idea which way you're leaning.

Good luck to ya in whatever you decide!

silentassassin 11-30-2004 06:57 AM

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

It's definitely a decision you have to make for yourself. It wouldn't mean nearly as much to me personally if I killed it with a gun as it would if I killed it with a bow and the kill would always be tainted in my own eyes. It would have an * by it in terms of personal satisfaction. I have two similar hunts coming up in the next couple of weeks and I have every intention of leaving my gun at home on both hunts. But you have to do what you are going to be comfortable with.

Rifle! What are the odds you will have him in bow range, or even see him ever again after this season? Isn't 190 darn near state record with rifle anyway? Don't get greedy only to miss getting him at all.

I don't think it's really going to matter what you take, if in fact the buck is around 190" you'll be lucky to even catch site of him..........he didn't get that big by being stupid!

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

Oh the delima;),

Personally if I were in your situation I'd grab my bow. I shot a buck the other day with my shotgun and I feel pretty crappy about it but ultimately it's up to you. Keep in mind you haven't preped a stand site. No shooting lanes exist and you'll be hunting it "blindly". Either way I wish you the best of luck. I'd love to see the ledgend fall to you.

Go get him!

I only hunt with my bow. I don't even own a firearm anymore except a muzzleloader I got as a gift a couple years back, It has never seen the woods.

I personally would rather watch a 190" buck walk by at 50 yards then shoot it with a firearm.
Thats just me though.

Good luck whatever you choose.

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

Having the chance to take a buck of a life time only happens once in a life time for most hunters if any? There are lots of bucks your going to see and not get when bowhunting. Thats just the way bowhunting is? But when you do get one its always a better felling than say with a gun! So (IMO) TAKE THE LIBERTY! And lets see some pics!!!!

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

I don't see how it matters what you use. Why should a bowhunter get more respect than a rifle hunter? Just because it might be harder to take a deer with a bow? That's like saying "I'm gonna fish for 10lb bass with 2lb line so I'll get more respect when I catch a big one". Give me a break. As long as you make a clean shot I don't care what you take it with. I say go with whatever you're most comfortable and have fun! Good luck to ya, hope you at least get to see him.

Yeahboy man,
Whatever legal means you need to get your buck, you should implement. As long as it's still thrilling for you, which at 190" should be!
Good luck gettin' him

You answered your own question why a bowhunter should get more respect! Thanks!

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

Kansasdeehunter your statement is rediculous
bowhunting is harder
You have to know how to pattern deer and get it within about 25 yards of you (about the average in america)
You can barely move this hole time as deer are so keen to seeing you when you draw, turn around, etc
You cant just go sit in a cornfeild with blue jeans and a blue flannel and shoot deer like you can rifle hunting

Nova14,

Thanks for displaying your ignorance. I don't know a single rifle hunter in his/her right mind that would hunt deer in anything other than full camo. I understand you're shooting range is a lot shorter when using bow, and you're more likely to be seen by a deer. I bow and rifle hunt myself. But that doesn't mean this guy shouldn't get respect for taking a deer (190 class or not) with a rifle. The whole "its the bow way or no way" mentality is stupid/childish. Whatever a person wants to use to put meat in the freezer and a rack on the wall(if that's what he's after) is what he should use. If you don't have respect for all hunters no matter what weapon they use then you don't deserve to hunt.

And next time you call someone's statement "rediculous", at least spell it right

blaze orange in camo patterns, don't forget deer are color blind buckeye

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

Actually kansas......

Deer don't exactly live in a black-and-white world, but instead have dichromatic vision, that is they can see all hues of blues and yellows, but they are red-green color blind.

Does your cousin own the property? If not you might want to get the owners permission.

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

thanks for clarifying that buckeye, I didn't know they weren't totally color blind, but I've been in too many scenerios where I had blaze camo on and had does and bucks walk within 10yds of me and never know I was there.

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

It quite obvious the deer in your area are totally blind.:D[8D]

RE: MAJOR BUCK!!!!!! Dilema!!!

Thanks for the reply's guys. Tommorow evening I will heading out with my cousin and will be talking to his boss. My cousin guarenteed me that I can hunt there but I figure this way is better anyways.

I will be out there Friday morning as long as he does give me the okay, and I think that I will have my bow in hand along with my digital camera! I might call the PGC tommorow and ask them if it would be legal for me to take both my rifle and my bow. If the buck does come in and he is in bow range, I could shoot him with my bow, and if he is out there away, I might take him with a rifle. Now, when I say this, I am not too confident in getting this deer, I have never been in these woods and have no idea where everything is at. The only thing I know is that my aunt saw this buck head into a small patch of x-mas trees surrounded by cut cornfields and bed down!

Like I said, I have never seen this buck, and it might not be nearly as big as what these guys are claiming, but I have heard this 190" range alot from a bunch of guys! Heck, about 10 guys that my dad works with are after this deer and they have said the same thing. I have heard that it is a 12 point and I have heard that it is a 14 point!

On a side note, here is a pic of a 20 point buck shot in PA on the opening day of rifle season.
