It's just a slang term that me and my buddies use the for the space above the lungs and below the backbone.

THERE IS NO SPACE ABOVE THE LUNGS AND BELOW THE SPINE...

WHEN SOMEONE HITS THAT SO CALLED SPOT, they actually hit just above the spine through the backstraps... Thats all.. the spine sits lower in the back than you think, trust me, I've spined a couple in my day on accident...

Like everyone said,I think he is dead somewhere also.Check the real thick stuff-swamps---water ways etc.Usually when a deer is wounded it will head into the thickest stuff he can find or water to lye down.Good luck in finding him and maybe you can do another search with your 5 friends. Also check the out skirts of fields, they will usually lay down just on the field edge.

Deer can be pretty illusive when they're injured ,be sure to check area's you think he won't be because they can tuck themselves into some pretty peculiar spot's such as around the base of a tree or under a fallen tree or even in the middle of a very small stand of pine that lay's low to the ground.Good luck finding him start a grid search in one direction and the grid search the other direction .

Didn't know there were backstraps above the spine? Shot a few deer high in that spot and didn't find them, no lung blood just tissue blood. Not saying that's it's not a fatal hit, any hit is fatal, just that the deer probably will not die within a few hundred yards and tracking on that kind of blood is hard to do. Just curious, you mentioned that no such spot exists, so what your saying is that the lungs go all the way up to the backbone? Must be the deer are different in NY.

The lungs on a living deer expand all the way up to the top of the ribcage, bottom of the spine. On a dead deer the deflated lungs may give the impression of a gap there, but the lungs fill up the entire chest cavity when the deer is alive. there is several inches of tissue above the spine however.

Yes the BACKstraps sit above the spine and between the vertebral bony protrusions that extend above the Vertebrae which is where the Spinal Cord runs through. You have to actually hit the spinal cord in order to paralize a deer. If you hit a deer above this spinal cord and through the bony protrusion, (lack of correct term), It wont be a killing shot and the deer will survive and the shot will have been through some of the Back Straps. The Tenderloins are on the Inside of the Chest cavity , bottom of the spine..

This is especially true if you hit farther forward through the High shoulder.

Not EVERY SHOT is Fatal by the way...
Study some Anatomy charts... DEER ARE TOUGH ANIMALS and have GREAT HEALING POWERS just like many ANIMALS..

Correction!!! Any hit could be fatal. Your right I better look at the chart again, I must have hit the deer in the top of the lungs and it just didn't bleed right! If I would have hit him in the spine he would have dropped right there, if i hit lungs he would have sprayed blood, why didn't he? If the lungs fill out the cavity, then why have people lost deer when they shot a little high it should have went right through both lungs and only ran 100 yards or so. I understand on the angle they could have shot one lung which, more than likely you won't find it. I guess your right I shoot my deer through the lungs and the heart now , you probably know more about the spine shot than I because i don't practice that shot, I find it unethical.
