Ground Blind Hunters

I have decided to try some ground blind hunting and I have a couple Double Bulls on the way. My question is, what is everyone doing for a chair? Are yall using like those fold up camp chairs or a Laz-Y-Boy or what? Thanks for the input. Also any other tips as far as gear organization in the blind that anyone has found useful. Good Luck to everyone.

I purchased the chair that comes from Double Bull when I got my blind. Only advice I can give you is wear dark clothing inside. As far as equipment inside the blind goes, bring in anything that isn't very long (other than your bow of course) and you should be good to go.

What else has helped immensely is the bow holder I also purchased from Double Bull. It is well worth it. It alleviates you from having to lay your bow on the ground which can take up a lot of foot room.

Play the wind for sure and cover that thing up with leaves, branches and anything else to camo it good.

They are a very different and exciting perspective.

Good luck!

How exactly does that work? Where do you hang it from? The bow on the ground is the only thing I found that I don't like so far with the ground blind. I end up with it laying across my lap.

I just bought an Ameristep a few days ago. Using it in a couple different places where stands aren't an option. 1st time setting it up I was putting the stakes in the ground and trimming som twigs on the ground and I looked up to see a 6 pointer about 20 yards away from me. I was convinced pretty quick... he had no clue I was there.

As far as a chair. I have one of those triangle fold up things. Works pretty good, but I like your lazy boy idea.

I have an ameristep penthouse blind. I also bought a small folding swivel stool that they sell. It has a tripod base and seat that swivels 360 degrees and is super quiet. The only thing i dont like about it is that it needs to be a little taller in order for me to see good out the large window that i have open.

Speaking of windows..... I'm new at the whole pop up blind thing. How many windows do you guys have open? Do you use the small ones to shoot out of or do you open the big one? Do you get busted if you have 2 big shooting windows open? Any tips?

I could of had a Turkey this year if I wasn't sitting in a chair. Make sure its something you can move out of easily and with little movement!

Turkey hunting we used the big window in the Dog house with no problems. But the deer sure looked at it funny with that big black hole.

My penthouse blind has 2 small windows on each side and 1 big one on each side. The small ones are tombstone shaped and have a camo mess that can be put over them when opened. The main thing to remember is not to have two windows straight across from each other open. That lets the deer see completely through and silohuettes you. Usually what i do is i open one big window in the direction i expect the deer to pass through and where i have a good shooting lane. Then i open two of the small ones, one underneath the big window and one on the adjacent wall that way i can watch straight out in front of me and too one side and i dont have two straight across from each other. I put the camo mesh up and it helps break it up so that there isnt a big black hole. I have only used my blind 3 times so far, i missed a doe the first time, she kept staring at the blind like she knew something was up, i didnt give her time to relax and took the shot and she jumped the string. I put i up last week and left it in the same spot all week so that they could get a little more used to it.

I just bought the ameristep doghouse. Still trying to figure things out with it as far as setup goes. Had it out yesterday and this morning. had a small buck walk the edge of the field heading stright to me, he stopped about 30 yds off, he knew something wasn't right. I had the small window in front of me open as well as both side windows. I don't think he saw me, but I figure they could see my shadow with both side open. I might leave it out too for a couple days and let them get used to it. I also need to pull it back from the field edge abit further.

blindsquirel,

I have bowhunted turkey out of a Double Bull for the last 2 years and the bowholder
that was mentioned actually sticks into the ground. it works great.
Double Bull sells them, but I actually got mine at the local sporting goods store that
has a small hunting section. Might want to check out Dick's sporting goods if there is one
near you.

Good luck!

I have a couple of the Doghouse blinds. I use a small 3 leg folding stool they sell at cabelas. I use the swivel model, it works pretty good.
As far as number of windows open the size of the doghouse limits you. I set the stool in one back corner and open windows on either wall in front of me while leaving the door and other wall window beside me closed. With that setup I can draw real easy diaginal across the blind and swing to either side to shoot through that window.

Well i guess my blind is out of comission for awhile. I put it up last wednesday and planned on hunting today and tomorrow. I didnt count on a high wind advisary and 30 - 40 mile an hour winds yesterday and today. Needless to say i found my blind laying about 100 yards from where i had it set up and it was in good condition except for the tent poles which were busted to pieces. So i guess it is out of commision until i get new tent poles. Im just glad i found it.

You will find that the only way to really hunt deer from a pop-up blind is to really brush it into the surroundings and have only 1 ot 2 windows open. I have one and dont use it much for deer due to the lack of views. The double bull is a good blind and I know that their customer service is just as good. My buddy left his in place for a few days and the cattle stomped it to the ground and broke that fancy joint in the middle of the bows. They didn't even want any money and rushed the part to get it back up for the weekend.

Watch out for visitors like scorpions and such if you leave it up for any time.
Make sure your chair is comfortable and silent. Some of those 3 legged stools make my nuts go numb after a few hours and that can't be a good thing!

Shoot thru mesh is Ok but dont use a mechanical or you will have big problems. I had to test it out a few times in the back yard first.

I have 2, an outhouse blind by Ameristep I bought last year that turned out to be too small to shoot a bow from & a hunters view lodge I think its called that I got a couple weeks back. I just put a small folding chair in it. Its got the tombstone type windows or you can open a big window that contains the 2 smaller ones. You can also open the top of the wall over the windows. I usually open 2 or 3 of the smaller windows about 1/2 way. I also leave the ones I think the deer will pass open all the time so they get used to seeing that black hole. I got 2 out of it so far. The first one never glanced at me. I shot over her back & thought I blew it but when I looked back out she was still there, looking at where my arrow hit the ground, never looked at me at all! The second doe was lookng at the blind but wasn't spooked at all. I waited for her to look away & tried to draw but she looked back & I thought she cought me but it seems she was just checking the blind out. I took the shot but was holdng a bit low & shot thru the window material, still got my deer but I ventilated my blind a bit. I also had 2 turkeys withn 15' or so & they never spotted me neither. I think the biggest thing is where you put it & how long you let it sit before you hunt it. You might get lucky & have a deer wander by the first day but thats not what I did. I let it sit a week before I hunted it & have seen deer almost every time I sat in it. I think I might put a different chair in there tho as dozed off the other day & almost fell out of the one I have in there.

Do you guys use Scotch Guard on your Blinds to water proof them.

Plus I was thinking of putting mine out in a field with a bunch of those big Round Haybales, thinking the Deer will think it is a Haybale.

i usually make my own blinds. if im speed scouting an area and find a good place to sit down, i take my gerber saw and cut a shooting lane or two and most of the time i have a little folding chair with me if i know i may be making a blind. usually they work pretty well. im thinking about getting an Ameristep blind next spring or summer.

I have a Hunter's View Trophy House for times when I have a partner with me ,
it's a great cheap blind for bow hunting . It has twelve total windows/ports , all with shoot through mesh except the two zip open roof holes . It weighs 15# and is Sniper camo . It cost around $70 at Sportsman's Guide .

When I go solo I have an Ameristep Outhouse with the blaze camo topper and Winter camo sock . It isn't suited to bow hunting , but I have a crossbow that I can use during our Late Archery season .

I use a doghouse which has worked good for me. I use a home made three legged stool with a swivel seat. The problem I had with others is I am 6'4" and they put me up to high to shoot from with my bow. The one I made is shorter. I use a bow holder that sticks in the ground. It keeps the bow from under my feet and ready for action. As far as windows, I usually only open two with maybe the third one just opened a crack. I've had deer walk right up to it and practically stick their head in.

Good luck with your hunting.

I use a swivel "bucket" that is padded on the seat and has a styrofoam lining. I think it cost like 12 bucks. It looks like a 5 gallon bucket turned upside down, which incidently I have also used and which works fine if turned upside down. Bigger problem for me is finding a blind that will let me draw back comfortably yet still has the cammo mesh shoot thru windows.

I just bought a Double Bull BS5. I definately see why it costs more. Definately higher quality than any other blind I've ever been in or seen. I think it is well worth the money. I've heard the DB chair that they sell isn't too bad. It's easy to carry since it fits right in the bag with the blind but it does get uncomfortable after awhile. I'm unsure as to what I'm gonna sit in when I hunt in the blind.
