Road Kill Dinner (Poll of sorts)

Would you guys eat a deer that had just been hit by a car?
This is assuming you knew it was hit by a car, it had just happened and you could get to it fast, and the deer wasn't mangled.

I have a friend who is in pretty tight with local law enforcement and they call him whenever a deer is hit. He is on his way over to pick one up at the moment that was just hit less than 30 minutes ago.
Anyhow, he is always asking me if I want some of the meat. I've always politely said no thank you.
I love venison as much as the next guy but the thought of eating road kill somehow seems nasty.

So I pose this to you - who would, who has, who wouldn't -----> and why????

I will, I haven't tried it yet, but I will do it because meat is meat. As long as it's fresh.

I don't see the problem.

I would want to have hit the deer myself, or taken care of the meat from a hit - and it would all have to have happened quickly.

I am currently meatless :( so I am considering taking some of it.

My wife left the deep freeze door open early in the hot part of summer and spoiled an entire freezer full[:@]

I've had the opportunity to take 2 does but both were with fawns still - I know I know.

Iv'e hit 2 deer and took them both home (at different times). The first one tasted just fine, but the second one extremely gamey and and strong smelling when I would cook the meat. Don't now if was stressed or something because I hit it when it was at a full sprint to get somewhere. I ended up giving it away to someone to make jerky out of it.

Heck yeah,, meat is meat,, it doesnt matter how it dies,, as long as it is fresh it still tastes the same as one that has been shot,, tasty.. You may have to trim a little bloodshot meat away,, but the undamaged meat is fine.. Ive actually hit some deer with my vehicles,, and if tey arent torn up badly,, i always use the meat.

I picked up one I saw hit by a pickup. I pulled off cause it was laying in the lane kicking and I knew other cars would hit it again. I didn't want to see any accidents. I grabbed and pulled it off the road and asked if the guy who hit it wanted it...he said he was on his way to work and couldn't take care of it...I said help me through it in my truck but upon skinning it, most all the meat was jelly....I had to discard of it

nothing wrong with it. I have picked up several fresh ones over the last few years. as long as its not busted up bad theres no difference between it and one you shoot.

I would do it and not give it a 2nd thought. Now if a deer was found dead of natural causes or something to that effect I'd definately pass. ;)

Heck yea,I picked up many a deer that way, they taste the same. The best I ever got was a double. They both jumped off a over pass and landed on their heads.

Yep no problem here, As long as the deer didn't take a full head on collision, and bruise all the meat. Tastes the same. No difference.

Hazcon7!

I have eaten roadkill in the past ,one evening a friend was coming home from work and seen a small buck run directly into a car ,He came and got me ,at that moment i was just heading for bed but i thought what the heck I'll go have a look and if it's all busted up I'll take a pass on it .
As it turned out the buck had a broken neck ,so I dragged him into the ditch and done the dirty work ,took him home and hung him in the garage for a couple of day's .I had this buck butchered and by eating the meat you couldn't tell that it had been roadkilll .
So my answer is yes I would eat it anytime .
I also have a friend who has conection's with the police who get's call's for deer hit by car's ,he'll only take them if they're not busted open .I don't think I'd eat a deer that was busted open niether ,but a broken neck ,sure I would.

I R a Red Neck![:o] Sorry couldn't resist. Yep I've eaten road kill. Actually depends where it was hit. Front shoulders are OK, cause there's not much meat there anyway. Just took the tenders, backstraps and both rear haunches. Yum, Yum. If they've been hit in the rear, there's usually not much to salvage. Jello...Yuck!

, the few times i have tried the meat was so blood shoked it was useless, i have non hunters call me from time to time telling me somebody hit a deer,do i want it? i guess it would depend on how it got hit or run over, if it was the head only and i could get some quarters out of it i probably would, hit near the rear, i'm not touching it[:'(]

i just eat roadkill possum ....they are better
, now thats some fine eatin, plus most times you aint got to gut em

Used to years ago but get enough of my own venison now. In NJ you have to get a tag from the police and it is illegal to take even the rack off a buck if you don't have that tag. Silly isn't it? Does anyone have these laws in other states?

Last night I cut the spikes off a road kill for my son. He liked how small it was!

Don't tell anyone!

I have on a couple of occasions. My mother hit a deer back about 8-9 years ago and the police let her bring it home. I's a messy job to process the deer as a collision with a car makes a mess of the animal. blunt trama isn't pretty under the hide.

I also know a guy who's the local harbor master and he generally gets the calls if the person who hits the deer dosn't want it. H'e give me a few 5lb bags of venison sausage that is absolutely delicious.

I'm not into eating opossum or racoon or squirell or pole kitty but a fresh deer kill shuldn't IMO be passed up. You won't get as much meat as if it were shot with a bow but anything that is recovered is better then letting the deer rot. If the a particular quarter looks bad then scrap it. If you can only salvage 1 side of the deer that ok too.

I havent tried it it nor seeing myself doing it unless i was the one who hit it. I would only keep that deer bc it costed me enough in car repairs. Sick i know but other then that i dont see i would.

I have eaten "roadkill" more than once. I actually got to work one day and found out a person had just hit one on the road and ran out there with a friend and the deputy put it down with some buckshot, so it wasn't even dead when I got there. It would have gone to waste otherwise. That particular deer was hit in the front, and both hindquarters and the backstraps were in perfect condition. Tasted great!
