I never heard of a set number. Falling or rising is best, with falling the very best. It means a front is coming and the deer will be out feeding before bad weather hits. Rising means the bad weather has passed and better weather coming meaning the deer will be out.

I wish T.R. were still around he's probably dona a study but I agree with Justhunt 100%. I have the most luck when the pressure is falling followed by a close second when the pressure starts to rise. High pressure is great for a beach day but not so hot for hunting.

Anything below 29" would pretty much put you in a hurricane! Some of the strongest hurricanes ever, in the history of the US had barometric pressure as high as 28.47" Weak hurricanes have barometric pressures as high as 29.25" Based on this information I can only come up with two conclusions. My source was the national hurricane center www.noaa.gov
The first theory is whomever came up with those pressures for good hunting was either on top of a very tall mountain.
My 2nd theory is they were just writing an article and needed to sound like they knew something.
Yet there is another possibility...You might not remember the article very well, and misquoted.

I found your answer in T.R.'s Whitetail Addics Manuel. I don't have it with me right at this monent but I'll post it on monday. You are correct though. I believe it was between 28. + and 30.+ ". The study had been done by a biologist named ken something.

More info to follow later.

excellent question Mathewsboy, have been wonder about that myself. Any extra edge we can get on those deer is a plus.

Found some more stuff...don't know if this is observations, scientific, or strictly someone's opinion though...

Predicting Whitetail Activity

Weather can have a profound impact on a hunter on any given day. Just how much can weather effect deer behavior? Does it really make a difference? The following charts detail what type of weather increases and decreases deer activity in the field.

GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS
(increased deer activity)

Barometric pressure of between 29.80 and 30.29
Puffy, gray altocumulus clouds in the north or northwestern sky, with winds of less than 10 mph coming from the south or southwest
High, scattered, cotton-like cumulus clouds overhead
Relative humidity of less than 60 percent
Red sunset
New moon

BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS
(decreased deer activity)
Barometric pressure of 29.75 or lower
Solid, gun-metal gray altostratus clouds accompanied by high southerly winds
Low, dark gray, rainy nimbostratus clouds accompanied by high southerly winds.
Lower cirrus clouds (mare's tails)
Tall, anvil-topped cumutonimbus clouds
Corona (halo effect) around the moon
Relative humidity of more than 60 percent
Yellow sunset
Full moon
