Do you think that the smell of wintergreen will drive the deer off? I never really spit on the ground. I always either swallow or spit in a pop bottle or something. Will the smell on my breath be to strong? whats your opinion?

I was chewing last week on stand, and spitting in a bottle. I made sure to close the bottle tightly after each spit. A massive nine point came right under my stand that night. So I think it is again a matter of deer being downwind or not. I chew copenhagen and think the oder is not that strong as compared to something like wintergreen.

Sometimes I dip (mint flavor) and spit on the ground. I have had deer come in and never had one pay any attention to it. Skoal makes a vanilla now that might be worth trying since some claim vanilla attracts deer. The thought of vanilla mixed with tobacco just does not appeal to me.

i chew, or i use to.............just quit! I figure if i can go a deer hunting season without one chew than i would be done, i only want one when i am in the deer stand or hunting. but i would spit on the ground i even spit on a spikes head that just would not go away due to some buck poppers i had put out on the ground(he was a horny lil fella!)

I've never hunted without a dip of skoal in my mouth. I do all the other scent stuff but draw a line there. I don't ever spit nor swallow I just keep it moist and go for hours. I don't think it makes a difference at all. You can't quit breathing so maybe the smell is actually an oral cover scent.

From the experiences my friends have that chew, it has never been a problem. IMO, deer are more curious about smells than they are spooked by them(except human and predator, of course). My dad actually busted a whole bottle of fox urine scent-cover while climbing into his tree stand. The whole bottom half of the tree was covered in it. They always say that too much of the stuff can spook deer. Well, later that day, he had 3 does, right under him, just standing there sniffing the tree.

I often chew (leaf - normally apple). I definitely don't swallo. Spit on the ground, on the stand, on myself sometimes
. I don't think it bothers them much. I was just on the ground last weend, chewin, when a deer walked up on me at 12 yards. Granted the wind was right, but I've seen plenty of deer when chewin.

i agree with doughboy. My buddy had a yearling come up and sniff the tree where his spit was landing. Maybe just cuz it was young, but who knows. Didn't seem to matter then.
