chew in the stand?
Do you think that the smell of wintergreen will drive the deer off? I never really spit on the ground. I always either swallow or spit in a pop bottle or something. Will the smell on my breath be to strong? whats your opinion?

RE: chew in the stand?
I don't think its a good idea. I think that they can smell it. But skoal I think has a new apple smelling chew.

RE: chew in the stand?
I was chewing last week on stand, and spitting in a bottle. I made sure to close the bottle tightly after each spit. A massive nine point came right under my stand that night. So I think it is again a matter of deer being downwind or not. I chew copenhagen and think the oder is not that strong as compared to something like wintergreen.

RE: chew in the stand?
Sometimes I dip (mint flavor) and spit on the ground. I have had deer come in and never had one pay any attention to it. Skoal makes a vanilla now that might be worth trying since some claim vanilla attracts deer. The thought of vanilla mixed with tobacco just does not appeal to me.

RE: chew in the stand?
i chew, or i use to.............just quit! I figure if i can go a deer hunting season without one chew than i would be done, i only want one when i am in the deer stand or hunting. but i would spit on the ground i even spit on a spikes head that just would not go away due to some buck poppers i had put out on the ground(he was a horny lil fella!):D

RE: chew in the stand?
I've never hunted without a dip of skoal in my mouth. I do all the other scent stuff but draw a line there. I don't ever spit nor swallow I just keep it moist and go for hours. I don't think it makes a difference at all. You can't quit breathing so maybe the smell is actually an oral cover scent.

RE: chew in the stand?
From the experiences my friends have that chew, it has never been a problem. IMO, deer are more curious about smells than they are spooked by them(except human and predator, of course). My dad actually busted a whole bottle of fox urine scent-cover while climbing into his tree stand. The whole bottom half of the tree was covered in it. They always say that too much of the stuff can spook deer. Well, later that day, he had 3 does, right under him, just standing there sniffing the tree.

RE: chew in the stand?
Have chewed from stands for years, sometimes I spit, sometimes swallow. Have had deer stand in spit puddle and have had deer blow-up for no obvious reason.

RE: chew in the stand?
I often chew (leaf - normally apple). I definitely don't swallo. Spit on the ground, on the stand, on myself sometimes :D. I don't think it bothers them much. I was just on the ground last weend, chewin, when a deer walked up on me at 12 yards. Granted the wind was right, but I've seen plenty of deer when chewin.

RE: chew in the stand?
i agree with doughboy. My buddy had a yearling come up and sniff the tree where his spit was landing. Maybe just cuz it was young, but who knows. Didn't seem to matter then.

RE: chew in the stand?
You think new Timber Wolf peach would attract deer???? lol.. I dont know how you guys swallow, gross.
|
RE: chew in the stand?
I always chew while huntin doesnt seem 2 bother them a bit. I spit right on the ground. I have been chewin Twolf Peach this year during hunting season smell doesnt seem to bother them one bit...

RE: chew in the stand?
I always try to take a spitter but never have noticed negative effects.
|
RE: chew in the stand?
Shot a 175 and a half inch buck with my bow with a lip full of copenhagen and a spit puddle under the stand so the chew stays in for this guy.

RE: chew in the stand?
Im glad someone brought this up... I chew Grizzly wintergreen like a bandit and when im sittin up in my stand, my lip feels empty.... I just might have to bring my can with me in the morning!!
|
RE: chew in the stand?
I always have a lip full of Copenhagen or Red Seal, and I have never known of it spooking deer. I spit on the ground some and swallow some.
By the way, I have tried Skoal Vanilla and I personally think the it is nasty. The apple is pretty good though. If I didn't have a lip full, it would probably through off my anchoring point!! Good luck and be safe |
RE: chew in the stand?
You guys go to your deer stands, take what ever you want with you. Do what ever you want when you are on your stand.
If you start seeing a lot of deer and they are staying about 40 to 50 yards away, then you are doing something wrong. If you are hearing the deer snort and blow and not seeing them then you are doing something wrong. So, as you eliminate what your are doing wrong, you will then know what you can and cannot do on a deer stand. Big hint. Just to get ya going. Sitting still has a very large impact on deer behavior. |

Sitting still has a very large impact on deer behavior just kiddin bees |
RE: chew in the stand?
I admit to having the nasty habit. Grizzly wintergreen is cheap, so I chew it and spit right down below the stand. This year had a fawn bed within 5 feet of my stand. Next time out had a doe go to where the wad lay and nuzzle it around. Didn't bother her but she kept sneezing/couging for minutes after. Laughed so hard I almost gave my position away. Guess she prefers Skoal. :)

RE: chew in the stand?
I've been chewing stand for years and haven't seen anything negative happen from it yet.
That's a good story there wideone. lol |
RE: chew in the stand?
I've been dipping for years on stand. never had any negative reactions to the spit itself, but I do believe it probably increases the amount of bacteria in your mouth and increase mouth odor, so yes, I do believe it can effect deer that are down wind. But the chew itself is not alarming to deer IMO.
I keep telling my self I need to quit this year....then next comes......then the next....... It's a horribly addicting habit. I love it!!!! Life without my Twolf would be brutal:D |
RE: chew in the stand?
I chew Hawken while on stand and never had any problems. I arrowed a buck at 4 yds while chewin. I have shot all of my deer while I had a dip in. So now I am supersticous,if If I don't have a chew I wont see any deer. My wife got onto me about chewin and I didn't have any for couple of days on stand and saw no deer . So now I'm back to chewing on stand.

RE: chew in the stand?
Just hunted last night with a dip of timberwolf wintergreen in and had a spike buck just 30 yards downwind and he never knew any different

RE: chew in the stand?
This topic reminds me of a story I read a few years back about a guy in Buffalo County, WI (BIG BUCK COUNTRY for those who may not know) who was just finishing his second cigarette when he turned around and this huge buck was coming in. He ended up shooting it. I can't remember how big it was, but one of the biggest taken in WI with a bow...or something like that. Does that mean deer aren't bothered by cigarette smoke either? Must be ok to smoke in your stand too? I don't know, I don't think anyone really know's for sure. These critters are so intriguing and they never cease to amaze me! That's why I'm addicted.

RE: chew in the stand?
Never get them all the way figured out I guess. I used to have a lease on a ranch were every morning the Mexican fellows who worked on the place would get up at about first light and turn on the Tejano music pretty loud. I could hear it well and figured the deer hunting was going to suffer from it. Turned out not to be an issue at all. I guess it was due to the working ranch scene and the daily grind and noise. Smoke could also become normal when dealing with "civilized" deer. Now you real hunters up north who go into vast expances of public woods this may all go out the window. The deer are pretty thick in these parts and human smells abound. The area has been heavily developed over the past 5-10 years with new neighborhoods where ranches used to be for generations. Once the building stops the deer come back and eat their gardens. LOL.
