Your odor from that mouth
I have been hearing people talk about there morning activities before they hunt and everyone talks about the negative apects of coffee on the breathe! I think it is fine if you eat an apple or two after the drink. Anyone else practice that trick. It works for me and my mouth doesnt have that I just licked an ashtray and rinsed it down with a bucket of java taste. Apples, they work, thanks Johnny Appleseed!

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I admit this is probably my worst issue when it comes to scent control. I really pay little attention to my breath. I frequently go out with coffee breath.
|
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I always take some wintergreen or speramint gum. Its doesn't smell of human nearly as bad as diet coke and a pop tart.....lol
|
RE: Your odor from that mouth
Just gargle with a little Tinks 69 and you should be good to go all morning.[:'(]

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I'll have to try that birdhunter1 !
Good Luck! |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I think that if someone can smell your breath so can the deer. I use a full face camo mask that is in my scent safe bag with some earth dryer sheets. this covers it a little, also i dont drink coffee or something strong smelling in the morning. Also eating something like apples or something sweet may help cover your coffee or cig breath.

Vanishing hunter by Hawgslimited buckfever synthetics might be the only scent eliminator spray that I have heard of that can and is recommended to use in your mouth. My brother (below) and I use it on every whitetail bowhunt by spraying down and always spray it in my mouth, swish it around and it leaves your mouth clean and scent free. www.hawgslimited.com Kevins products work

Birdhunter1, Beat me to it. I use to take a shot of homemade tinks 69 everymorning.

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I gargle with baking soda and water for about 30 seconds and then drink a little water to get rid of the salty flavor.

C'mon, if a deer is close enough to smell your breath, shouldn't he have an arrow in him? This topic always blows my mind.
I knew a guy once who tried to market a line of clorophyl gum. He could never come up with anything that supported his claim that deer smell his bad breath. He never marketed it and eventually gave it up. Tasted good though! To my knowledge, not one of my friends or acquaintances has ever spooked a deer by exhaling. Some of their breath is pretty nasty even without coffee. Not something I'll ever pay any attention to. Greg |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
When you are breathing you are not only giving off sent, but you are projecting it. Your breath is also filled with water vapors that will cause it to travel more concentrated in the wind. One last thing, have you worn a face net? If so, after your hunt smell the part of the net from infront of your mouth. It is a bad smell and will be stronger than any other smell on your body unless you spent the day in 100 degree weather wearing a sweater.
Thats why I worry about my breath. Stryker777 |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
So what you're saying is, Skoal Straight is not taking care of my breath?
Guys, even if you gargle w/ baking soda and urine, your breath will still develop bacteria over the course of a 3-4 hour stint in a tree stand. Eventually, you'll be giving off some bad breath fumes. Probably the best thing I've heard so far is to continually apply the Vanishing Hunter throughout the hunt. I have still not had a deer walk up to me and tell me that the Skoal is bothering them. No offense to anyone, but sometimes too many are trying to take the fun out of hunting. |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I rinse with Atsko's NODOR between pinches 'o hagen, or take a bite of an apple and suck on it. It seems to me that breath can travel a good distance beyond bow range, just like body odor. If that buck smells you from the other side of the knoll or from 50 yards away in that thick stuff, you won't get the shot.
|
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I also use the vanishing hunter after I've brushed my teeth.
I love coffee but avoid it when I go hunting mainly because my fingers get cold. C'mon, if a deer is close enough to smell your breath, shouldn't he have an arrow in him? This topic always blows my mind. |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
There is a product being sold that is gum with chorophyl they want bout eight bucks a pack for it. Supposed to help with body odor as welll as breath. I believe mouth odor can be our main source of odor after taking all other precautions. Apples work for me too.............dabow

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I'm a skoal straight man myself. I think deer like the molasses smell. ;)
Gonna try the new apple blend this year. |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I agree that breath is a factor. I know that it's the weak link in my system.
I avoid coffee and I floss - gargle w/hydrogen peroxide - brush w/ straight baking soda before I go out. I usuallly eat an apple while I'm hunting. But I stiil would like to do more. I don't think that it's nessacary to but a scent lock suit (not that I think that they don't work) because I have found that washing everthing in scent free soap and using a spray works. But I have been contemplating purchasing a scentlok mask. I know that it might give me a little more confidence even if it doesn't work 100%. Has anyone used one of these? |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
Roman ,
if you're that concerned about your breath go to your local drugstore and buy some chlorophyll tablets for about $4 . If you take them regularly before the season starts , and suck on some while on stand , your odor will be greatly reduced . You'll also have the prettiest green poo ... ;) |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
i agree with some of you others, a good old pinch of skoal about all i use.

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I pop a listerine strip once in a while. Does it help ---- I have no idea.
|
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I like to grab a squirrel on the way in and lick him. Deer are used to the smell of squirrels. Oh, the squirrel will fight at first but he likes it too!:D

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I swish then swallow a tiny sip of real Vanilla every once in a while on stand. IMO we are giant scent wicks leaking at the nose/mouth.

Greg If you don't think a deer can smell your breath from distances further than bow range, your underestimating a deers nose. Your breath and hair are two of the biggest culprits when getting scented by a deers nose. We can clean our hair and body with scent eliminators but your breath is another story. |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
Sorry guys. Been hunting for thrity years and killed many, many deer with bow, shotgun and muzzleloader. Bucks chasing does, does feeding through, yearlings following mom, and on and on.
Never once can I say that the fact that I didn't brush my teeth ever hurt my hunt. (I always brush my teeth by the way.) I don't want to fire anyone up, do what you want to do...but to me, it seems silly to worry about my breath. Sure it is moist and has scent. I just don't see how any bad breath can alarm a deer. Maybe it can, just not by my experience. If I use lysterine, scope or chew dentyne, wouldn't that smell more like a person than halatosis? One last point, have you ever smelled Tinks 69? If they like that, maybe the deer like bad breath just as much. Could turn the scent industry on it's ear! Greg |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I know for a fact that I spooked one of the biggest deer I have seen because I began to hyperventilate after watching it for a couple of minutes. One gust of my taco breath from lunch was all it took for him to vacate the area. I seriously believe her would have ended up in my lap had I not exhaled with my mouth open. The deer was 40 yards out.
|
RE: Your odor from that mouth
to everyone their own but i really don't worry to much about my breath. i drink coffee and chew cope and never been in a situation where i thought i was a factor in spooking a deer.
if you're that worried about your breath to take these precautions what are you doing about your farts? ORIGINAL: RiverBottomBowHunter I like to grab a squirrel on the way in and lick him. Deer are used to the smell of squirrels. Oh, the squirrel will fight at first but he likes it too!:D |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I know scent is an important thing to mask, but c'mon. What do you guys do when you have to fart? Not everyone can afford the luxury of scent control suits to mask the methane from the butt.

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I hunted Iowa this last weekend and saw 36 deer in 3 days. Many ended up in bow range downwind of me. I am a fanatic about scent control except my breathe. Some of the hunts were with scent lock some not. But 30-40 yards out, most of the deer would look up at me as if they knew something wasn't just right when they were downwind. They didn't run off or anything but they were very wary. I think from now on I will take that added measure to help cover my breath by eating apples or doing some of the other things mentioned here.

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I do something only while hunting that I never do in real life -
I keep my mouth shut! :) |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
Well said, a creed most of us should live by!
|
RE: Your odor from that mouth
I'm a heavy smoker, and I'm pretty sure that I'm just screwed by the fact that even after showering and brushing my teeth deer can still smell the tar and nicotine that's soaked into my body. Theirs nothing I can do about it for now except pay close attention to the wind. But my belief is that odor(and we're not neccessarily talking about death breath like the wife has in the morning) that originates from our mouth is definately an alert to deer of human presence. But who knows maybe Gryan has a point.

RE: Your odor from that mouth
I will post a pic of me drinking some deer pee! HAHA
|
RE: Your odor from that mouth
If you think about it, we are carnivores as all the predators are. Deer and the animals they dont care about are mostly herbivores and some omnivores that still eat mostly greens. Meat causes different bacterias to grow and thus different smells. Some one needs to do some controlled research on the subject lol.
Stryker777 |
RE: Your odor from that mouth
Yes we do eat meat and I think most of that "smell" comes from the mouth! Meat eaters do give off that odor. We take all these steps to cover out scent but most of us forget about our grills.
