What noise to stop a walking deer
What noise do you use to stop a walking deer? Or does that really work?

RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
A squeak from your stand usually works! For a second anyway!:D
|
RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
whistle, this usually stops them long enough to get a shot off.
|
RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
a buck grunt or doe bleet will usually stop em for a sec

RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
any little noise will work, the thing you want to remember is that if you put the deer on red alert it is more likely the deer can jump the string (not that it happens all the time) but a whitetail deers reaction time is a lot faster than the speed of sound and it doesn't matter if you have a bowtech blacknight 2 that has an ibo of like 342 to 350fps the deer can react way before your arrow will hit it

I Use a Maaaaaaa.. aka Sheep noise... It works great... If you want video proof.. Go buy a big bucks video by PRIMOS... They do it all the time and it works great for them.. Thats where I picked it up at.. Just don't do it super loud... |
RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
I use Maaaa also it does not scare a deer they actually become curious. Have even used it to get a deer to come in just out of bow range.

Pay attention ya'll....:D
I use a hands free grunt call that works by inhaling instead of exhaling. I can do it at full draw, completley hads free and with only 2-3 inches of movement of my head. Stops them dead and when I attach it behind my back it sounds as though it's coming from behind me so....they look right through me and past me looking for the source. Tube that clips to your coat and the reed attaches 14-16 inches behind it. Attach it so the tube hits your mouth when you tirn your head and Voila Away Outdoors Bowgrunter Plus. I have no affiliation with them...it's just a great product. Here's a link to it and theres a video you can watch to see it in action. !Away hunting products |
RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
Hi Trushot, I've just purchased the Away grunt call you talked about. I was hoping to find someone that has used it.
Does it really work to the point of no hands needed. leaving both hands on the bow? It really made sense when I saw it on tv. The position of the mouthpiece, the sound blowing behind you, the inhale instead of exhale even makes sense because I actually take a small breath and hold before I shoot, also keeps the breath scent down I would imagine. Can't wait to grunt stop a buck in his tracks. |
RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
I'll give this one to the sheep callers. The good points are, it woorks very well, you always have your call with you, hands free, costs no $$. How could you go wrong. With a little practice this is very efective!

RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
If im bowhunting, ill use a soft bleat or a maaa. during the off season, i bought a Knight and Hale grunt call and is tiny, and you put it in teh corner of your mouth when you stop them. inhale call, makes a real soft grunt. If im rifle hunting, i usually use a whistle, espeically posting a drive or something when the deer are moving at a good clip. no way they can jump a bullet. i was reading somewhere that deer dont actually squat the string, but when they start running, they drop down a bit so they get maximum power from their back legs.

I do the sheep sound also,it seems to work every time and does not seem to scare them off.Listen to it's sound almost sounds just like the small primos can call even more natural if you ask me.I do have the primos call too.

RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
I just do my own version of a buck grunt. I think whistling is your best bet but sometimes your lips are to cold and chapped out there to let out a good whistle [:'(] i prefer shooting them on a dead run at 50 yards with my bow though ;) j/k.......gl this season

RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
I try not to make any noise at all. I want the deer perfectly relaxed when I release the arrow. However in MI we can bait, so I usually throw four or five apples or something on the ground where I think the deer will be. This usually stops them right where I want them and gets them looking down or something. I'd be afraid to whistle or something and have the deer look right at me. From what I understand they have independant parabolic hearing and can locate sound very quickly.
If I had to though I would probably just try to imitate a grunt call with my mouth. I have thought about taking a turkey diaphram with me and chirping with it. That's about the most realistic sounding call I have. Paul |
RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
I usually fart. Then I don't need any arrow either they seem to just drop in their tracks.

David,
Yes it is, indeed, hands free. You may have to play with it a bit to get it positioned just right but I've used it 2 years now and I won't go without it now. Nice to be able to grunt and not put a deer on edge thinking there's a sheep in a tree;) while at full draw:D:D I love mine and recommend it highly. Another nice part about the inhale is that it won't freeze like every other reed based grunt I've used in the Michigan late season. Paul makes a good point as well...I only use this if they're hustling and I don't thin I'll get a second chance. I'd rather them be completely at ease and reduce the "string jumping factor" as much as possible but the Bowgrunter Plus can be extremely quiet as well and attached around the back...they can't quiet place where it came from even at 10-15 yards. Like I said...they look right through you thinking it came from 30-40 yards away. |
RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
I usually use an arrow through the lungs. It stops them everytime. Seriously, I know the ethics police are going to have a picnic with this reply..... but if the deer is relaxed and walking along at a leasurely pace I just shoot if it's 25 and under. They're less likely to hear the bow go off or jump at the shot until it's too late. Just the slightest of leads and let it go. IF the shot is there I take it. If I have plenty of time for later shots I may wait, but I usually hunt some thick stuff and the holes are where they are. A deer at a little prance or one who has a little quickness to his step I may give a MMaaaaaaaaa to .... but more often I'll shoot a walking one or wait for him to stop on his own or let him go.

Try making the sheep sound or whistle at the same time you release the arrow. They are less likely to jump the string and will stop to look around.:)

RE: What noise to stop a walking deer
I do the maaaaaa noise. If you do it right it sounds like a doe grunt or a doe bleat. What you have to watch is how loud you do it. If the deer is close and relaxed it can spook them if you do it loud. However, if the deer is moving pretty quick or is out at 25 yards or so, you sometimes need to get pretty loud with it. If that doesn't work, I have even hollered at them. The sound will typically echo and they can't determine where it's coming from so they stop and try to pinpoint the sound.
I use a hands free grunt call that works by inhaling instead of exhaling. I can do it at full draw, completley hads free and with only 2-3 inches of movement of my head. I would offer one word of advise to those who use this method. Sometimes it's awkward to make yourself make a noise while you are preparing to shoot (or atleast it was for me). Your mind is focusing most of it's attention on the shot and the sequence that you have set up for yourself. It can be awkward. So I actually practice while I am shooting. I draw the bow get the pin on the target and then maaaaa and trip the release. Plus the more you do the noise the more you can perfect it and the more natural it becomes. I alos practice making the noise while I am watching hunting shows (the wife loves that:D). Wehn the deer get to where I would shoot them from the camera's angle then I practice my bleat to stop them and put my imaginary pin where it needs to go etc. Let's face it you only get to pratice the actual shot on a couple of occaisions a year. The more mental conditioning that you can get in, the better off you are. |
