What you dont want to see.
Dont know about you guys but with 2 weeks left before the season opens here in TX.
I dont want to see this sort of thing at my feeder. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 25 pics taken and every one of them hogs. I think it is going to be a lean deer season for me untill we can get rid of these hogs. From the looks of it we have atleast 3 or 4 different mobs of them running around down on the lease. I hunted them Monday night and right on que at 9pm they came in from behind my stand the old sow that leads the pack was directly under my stand she must have caught wind of the No Stinking bugs spray I had on and she bolted outa there taking the group with her. I think I am gonna have to set up a ground blind 20 yds from the feeder on the opposite side to my stand seeing they are coming in from behind and directly under my stand. |
RE: What you dont want to see.

RE: What you dont want to see.
We don't have hogs in Missouri but the funny thing is, I'm going down to hunt them in Jan. To bad its not on your lease.:D

RE: What you dont want to see.
I'll pop a couple of them for you.:)

RE: What you dont want to see.
How would you go about getting rid of them hogs. That sucks for deer hunting. Good Luck

RE: What you dont want to see.
Kind of tells a few fellas who seem to think that scent don't seem to matter. If a hog is going to wind you, a deer sure the heck would. I would never use bug spray to deer hunt. I have also cut a scouting trip very short a month ago. It had been very wet, more skeeters than I have ever saw. I hightaild it right back out of there. Two layers of clothes, gloves, and a good head covering usually keeps them off me on the stand.

RE: What you dont want to see.
I believe I can help you with that little problem. I love to shoot hogs, and need to kill something with my new BowTech VFT Patriot Dually. We shoot them at night on a friends lease, shotguns/slugs and rifles. Been wanting to get near some while there is still some light out. But they have a night time feeding habit down there. A bow kill would be more fun.

RE: What you dont want to see.
Hogs are supposed to have a great sense if smell.

RE: What you dont want to see.
I hear ya Ausie. The place we are hunting is covered in hogs. We have pics with up to 18 hogs under it at a time. Haven't been getting a lot of pics of deer though. Since the place is only 240 acres with about 200 huntable, we don't want to pressure the deer out of there by hunting hogs this close to season, otherwise we'd be whacking them. Now if they show up for breakfast or dinner at one of the feeders while deer hunting then that's another story.

RE: What you dont want to see.
Well, its not a trophy 10 point, but there is a lot of good eating out there. Don't forget, the uglier the animal the better the taste.
Good Hunting |
RE: What you dont want to see.
Yepper. . . I also found a group of 6 to 8 of them last week while out at the ranch filling feeders and clearing some brush. Managed to get 3 of the little ones. Took the first one at about 40 yards. The rest ran around but came back 10 minutes later and then I got 2 more small sows when they got side by side and got a 2 for 1. My. .270 130Gr Horandy rounds work pretty good even after having been through a foot or so of pork.:D:D

RE: What you dont want to see.
I know the feeling man. That is why I opened my own hog hunting outfitter. I might as well try to make some cash off of thier nusance to us. That is exactly what every one of my feeders looks like.

RE: What you dont want to see.
As long as you keep feeding them they will stay put on your land. Get rid of the feeders and they will dispurse to other areas. It's only common sense.

RE: What you dont want to see.
Man, I would love for a feeder to look like that!! I love deer hunting, but I love hog hunting as well, and I very rarely get to do it since I don't have a place and the closest place costs $150. As far as smell, hogs have an excellent sense of smell. They might smell as good well as deer or better, but they can't really see or hear like a deer can.

Two layers of clothes, gloves, and a good head covering usually keeps them off me on the stand. I have used "no stink" bug spray in early season here in NC and have NEVER had a deer wind it and spook. Of course, I don't use much; just a dap on the backs of my hands and the back of my neck and I cover with scentAway. I launder my camos in scentAway detergent and bathe with scent killer soap beforehand too. I have had deer literally eating leaves 2" from my boot without winding me. I thought she was actually going to bite me, LOL. |
RE: What you dont want to see.
I turned all my feeders down to about a 3 second burn, the pigs slowly started disappearing. The deer started showing a little more and as soon as i cranked em back up after deer season, the piggies came back in full force.I also baitd some other areas real hard to attract the porkers away from some of my stand sites.

RE: What you dont want to see.
Yep they are pretty smart but not as smart as we are.:D:D. As for their senses. Yep they can smell real well and hear pretty good. Beleive it or not Pigs see better than you think, but being that those little eyes are so low they do miss alot. A pig can tell one person from another at 100plus feet. Must be able to see fairly well to do that, I can't with out glasses any more. I have found though that when pigs are busy eating in a group they make lots of noise, good cover. JMO

RE: What you dont want to see.
That is really disappointing if you were looking for deer but if you were a hog hunter then......
Hope you get rid of your problem as quickly as possible. |
RE: What you dont want to see.

Im about 45 minutes from rolla and we have hogs, some black bear, and have seen a couple mountain lions move through over the last few years. I havent seen a bunch of hogs, but they are here and if you see em in my area conservation wants you to hunt them and report the location so they can help eliminate em. Stryker777 |
RE: What you dont want to see.
id love takin off your hands for you but check this out. You can ask around to some of your locals if they would like to come hog hunting. Thats a way to make a killing down here in georgia. I few locals like to get there dogs out there and roudy them up and the little ones the catch and turn around and sell them for about $50-$75 to local people that love cooking those things. There GREAT EATING
